The Last Of Us HBO Series Description:
The Last of Us is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. It features Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Joel's smuggler partner Tess.
The Last of Us, said to be the largest television production in Canadian history, was filmed in Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022. It is the first HBO series to be based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint and Word Games. The first season consists of nine episodes written by Druckmann, who wrote and co-directed the original game, and Mazin. Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed for the game, composed the score. The series is set to debut on January 15, 2023. It received acclaim from critics, who praised the performances, writing, production design, and score; several considered it the best live-action video game adaptation.

Some people were calling the cgi on the giraffe garbage but in the behind the scenes they used a real giraffe, I guess real life isn’t realistic enough for people XD
I laugh at those comments too. And at the people that complained Bella didn't look enough like the game character, while it turns out she looks and sounds a LOT like Ashley Johnson.
I think they did a weird recoloring on the giraffe to up the green so it would fit more with the plants around it lr just to compensate the blue bleeding from the blue screen keying, that’s why it looked a little off to me and others but no way it looked bad or remotely close to being cg I agree.
Those mean critics are just cry babies
fun fact: the giraffe was real! the bluescreen room was built above the zoo's giraffe enclosure and they filmed the scene there
"this scene was alright," proceeds to cry at it 😂
The opening with Ashley Johnson herself just beautiful.
Ashley has the most amazing eyes.
Its ok mello your human crying and having feelings and emotions is part of being human its ok to cry we love you and appreciate you so much😁
Fun fact: one of the two nurses was played by the one who played Abby from The Last Of Us Part 2 Laura Bailey.
She also voiced one of those nurses in the game as well
@@k_enigmatic6605 oh really? That’s so cool!
There was a part 2?
@@rabidplatypusl_l3333 yes. It came out in 2020.
Absolutely love how faithful they stayed to the ending of the game. I honestly feel I would have done the same thing because in that moment you’d just see red. I love how they shot the hospital scene: the sound design was incredible. Side note: I’m so happy they shot with a real giraffe!
druckman or mazin said something like "we wanted to make sure the person who gave birth to ellie as a character, to also give literal birth to her in the show"
How ironic that Bella's casting got criticized b/c she doesn't look like Ellie yet people have constantly noted that she looks like Ashley.
And to think Joel thought Ellie was a waste of time in the beginning. The progression is incredible.
Just cargo
I believe the Giraffe scene serves as a "Break" from all of the chaos throughout the game / show (not just for Ellie & Joel, but for the audience playing / watching).
Exactly. It's not only the moment that brings ellie spark back, but "the calm before the storm", the moment right before there's no turning back. That's why you can stay there as long as you want
Mell, I'm literally crying right now!
When Joel said he flinched and he didn't know why and you said it was SARAH who made him flinch!!!!
I agree wholeheartedly!!!! She was without a doubt his guardian angel
I think the theory why ellie is immune because the cord is still connected when ashley got bit. But if that's the reason, the cordyceps really spread so fast to your body.
I think it could also be that the knife her mom used to cut the umbilical cord was the same one that she used to stab the infected. Either way, Ellie was fighting off the infection from birth.
@jenthejen that's the exact reason Elie is immune. 😊
This show in combination with the behind the scenes for each episode and the podcast is so good. Adds so much context and more emotion to it
probably my favourite reaction channel for this series. you seemed to have a higher emotional intelligence than most reactors. subscribed!
Thoughts:
1. Papa Pedro was superb
2. Bella was superb
3. Emmys for both
4. CM and ND did a superb job on adapting the game to fit a TV series screenplay.
5. Location filming totally on point.
6. Cinematography outstanding.
7. Set design and decoration outstanding.
8. Giraffe was real - not CGI.
9. As well as Ashley Johnson in the finale, the GOAT Laura Bailey reprised her role as 1 of the nurses in the operating theatre. ( Ana Rice played the other nurse - Ana and Laura look very similar!!). Laura also did other vocal roles in the first TLOU game including newscaster etc. However Laura is more known for her main new character role in TLOU2 game.. no spoilers from me. Laura is A GOAT voice actor with 70+ anime/animated series and 150+ computer games.
Eillie from the game playing eillie's mom giving birth to ellie in the show lmao
I watched the show with my dad, who literally bought a new controller for our PS4 just to play the game. He left it bc he's more of a FIFA player, but really tried (he died within the first 5 minutes of gameplay, which I didn't know was possible).
And here's the thing: He doesn't play a lot of games either. But I really appreciated the fact that he was willing to try something I love. And all bc of this show.
It has been an amazing ride! I've cried in almost all episodes. They did an amazing job staying close to the source material while expanding and (at times) going for something different.
This is how you adapt videogames to live actions. We need more of this.
As Pedrito would say, this is the way 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Pedro has been a very underrated actor, I absolutely love him.
You can tell they respected the source material so much I wonder if certain powerful game scenes that were skipped or shortened was on purpose to make sure there are unique experiences in game for people who only watched
Completed story mode 3 times in 2014, Almost a thousand hours in multiplayer. The TV show gets a standing ovation from me 👏
I think they did amazinggggggggggg with the cast and the storytelling of TLOU, as a fan of Part 1 and Part 2 This was by far my favorite TV series adaptation of a video game. I recreantly revisited Part one and I freaking loved it and I am currently working on Part 2, I am excited, anxious, and nervous and what they going to do for Part 2. I always wanted to know if Joel did do the right thing all these years not knowing. Between the game music and the cast of characters was simply amazingggggggggggggg I been in tears all season long. I loved the layers they brought to the show. The Giraffe scene was my favorite throughout the game.
Warning: DO NOT RESEARCH PART 2 of TLOU!
@ 13:10 - The Nurse on the right with long, brown hair is Laura Bailey (voice actor for "Abby").
You always have the best reactions cause you let your emotions show
First saw Pedro in Narcos series. Hes phenomenal. (Michael Pena in Narcos series is also absolutely amazing)
Pedro also had a memorable role in Game of Thrones as Oberyn Martel. I was indifferent to his character in the book, but Pedro brought so much charisma to his character. He was awesome. Coincidentally, Bella also played a character in GoT as well!
I absolutely *love* your enthusiasm and excitement when watching these episodes. I never played the game, so I really enjoy watching along with you and seeing your reaction to how they translated the game to the screen. 😊
I had put my mom on this series with her knowing nothing and there were thoughts in her head early where she asked “will they show a backstory of Ellie and show how she was bit” and then the left behind episode came out where she was satisfied not to mention the beginning part as an addition with the finale. We had finished watching The Walking Dead “TWD” when it ended months ago and when she saw the infected she wasn’t that interested in that part she had thought they looked weird due to her being used to TWD zombies design and etc but it grew on her and she told me the main part she cares the most about in the show is the storyline between Joel and Ellie and the world they’re in with crazy people but it makes me question how many new viewers out there have the same thoughts or questions I loved they did with season 1 and listening to TLOU podcast on HBOMAX it gives a lot of insight on what to expect like more infected in which people wanted and etc
Omg love ashley johnson in that show blindspot !!!!! Bill nye cameoed as her dad lol😊
Neither of them played the game. Pedro didn't even know the show is based on a game until he told his nephews he'll be in the show and they flipped the fuck out.
So Ellie is basically Blade! ❤
Main thing I hope people who don’t play video games realize from this show is that, video games can tell great stories and have amazing narratives and structure. I’ve seen so many people who aren’t into video games think they’re all mindless Mario or Quake type games, when imo they can tell an even better story than movies or TV shows, because they are interactive, you are in the story and not just watching it. You are apart of it, and I feel that gets you more invested in it. I am glad to see some people say they have a new appreciation for video games like TLOU, as I’ve seen non-gamers play it now, and it’s opened up a whole new world for them.
Always love your reactions and enjoyed watching this with you. Coming from someone who never played the game, I absolutely looove this show and the acting! Like obsessed. Watching along with all my fave reactors has been the highlight of my days.
I knew the giraffe was real when that tongue came out. When I was kid, my mother brought me to the zoo and they had this thing where you could feed the giraffes and when I did, it’s long ass tongue wrapped all over my arm and scared the shit out of me. I know a real giraffe tongue when I see one.
MELL, I absolutely loved this series and I've never played the game I'm not really a gamer!! I've watched at least a dozen different reactions to each episode, maybe more for this episode!!!
Great point about Sarah stopping Joel by making him flinch!! This is such an amazing episode to show how far their relationship has come, Joel and Ellie!! Each one basically says I love you in the best way that they know how!! It probably means just as much to each one of them but I think Joel in particular takes it more to heart!! He's been living with an empty hole which is the death of Sarah for 20 years!! Now he finally has something to fill that hole, and she proclaims she will follow him wherever he goes!! Imagine how that makes Joel feel inside after not having anything like that in his life for over 20 years in this post-apocalyptic hell??? There was no way that Joe could lose another daughter!!!
So then we get to the big dilemma and big question that has been the debate of people for at least a decade since this game came out!!!
Do you save one person and forgo saving humanity??? Or do you sacrifice the one person that is your every reason to live??? Because if Ellie dies Joel For Sure commits suicide!!!
I am not a parent but I am going to side on the way 100% of parents answered that question, they would definitely save their child, fuck humanity!!!
It also begs the question...
IS A WORLD THAT WOULD SACRIFICE A CHILD TO SAVE ITSELF REALLY WORTH SAVING??? I'M WITH JOEL, HELL NO!!!
I've noticed watching lots of reaction videos many gamers were more emotional than the TV only crowd. I think it's because us gamers get that nostalgic emotional rush when we watch this adaptation. I didn't get emotional at the giraffe scene in the game, but I oddly did in the show, because of that nostalgia. Same with Joel going on the killing spree in the hospital.
I think the David stuff has lingered with her, but I think in this particular episode and in the game, the top thing on her mind is the concern that her journey is coming to an end and she's worried that this cure thing might not work and she'll have even more guilt that she wasn't able to save everyone like she has with Riley, Tess, and Sam. This journey was her one shot at redemption in her eye's, and like you said you can tell at the end that's what she would have wanted. But no way Joel was going to let her die.
You and I are cut from the same cloth. I love this game and story as much as you. Playing again right now yet again on PS5. The Savage Joel scene was epic. Actually poetic in a beautifully horrible way. They played the Ellie carry escape music from the game during his rampage. Best part of the entire show for me. We needed more of Savage Joel imo, but we always have the game. Btw, I teared up the entire episode.
It was an actual real giraffe. So fuckin cool. ❤
mello is so meeee when watching shows 😭😭 i be crying soo much
fun fact, they actually did say smth abt Joel trying to kill himself in the video game but it's way more implied instead of outright stated like it is in the show :)
I definitely felt the last episode needed to be a bit longer. We needed more of a "come down" falling action. Though while I get why they ended the episode and season this way, I'd like to see what happened when the made it back to the town.
Other than that everything involving the hospital was amazing, and I crave more.
So glad I came across your channel man, what a great 9 weeks this has been. Your reactions were very similar to mine, it's been a while that I was so emotionally involded in a TV show for sure. My weekly ritual was watching the episode, watch a breakdown on YT and watch your reactions. Loved how are you covered the comparisons with the game, we can all agree that the TV show could have been better in many ways but they've done a great job in the end. I even did 2nd viewings, which I never do, on some episodes in French just to see how good they did it (same voice actors from the game and they killed it). Anyway thank you bro and will be watching some of your content, you better be back when season 2 comes!
Been waiting for these reactions!!! You’re one of my favs. I didn’t realize you moved and thought maybe you suddenly hated the show 😭😭😭
You were my favorite reviewer! Can’t wait for s2
I love the discussions the game, now show has prompted with the decision Joel made. And the reactions have been just as polarized which is cool. Some think Joel is the villain and others think he’s the hero. It’s really all about perspective. One reactor described him as an active shooter in the hospital and that gave me chills. Because to the fireflies who just came in to work that day with intentions on saving the world, that’s what he was. Such a great show!
Hell yea one of my fave reactors❤ so glad u enjoyed this series
Did anyone else think about the first Blade movie during the beginning of this episode?
Haha YES! I was like “oh so it’s the Blade theory”. Ellie’s a day walker 😂
@@tionak the spore walker lol I'm just glad I'm not the only one who thought of that when I watched this 😆
Two days in a row, love this!!!!!
Wow I'm speechless so a powerful episode paired with a powerful reaction! Can't wait for season 2 and can't wait to see what's next for you Mell! 😊❤
I love the similarities between the game and the show, but I found myself loving the differences so much more. What they added to the show grows the world and story even more than the game. They don't remove anything from the game's story but expand on it.
I loved what Ashley Johnson did with being Ellie's mom, she was fantastic in the twenty minutes of screen time that she had. She is one of the few who kill an infected all by herself while giving birth simultaneously!! I've been playing this game since 2016 and have been hoping for a live-action show, and I have no complaints about what was produced. It was so beautiful without the game knowledge, and so creative when you do know the game. Thank You Craig and Neil for a masterpiece!!
I've loved your reactions to this show and it has felt as though I've been watching the show with you. I hope you do a season 2 reaction also, and I thank you for your tireless work in producing hilarious work for us to watch! Love your stuff and can't wait for what else you share with us.
My only complaint with the finale… too short I want more!! Lol. Really enjoyed your reactions, love your passion for the game and seeing you light up at certain scenes. I think they did a great job of fleshing out Joel’s character. You understand where he’s coming from but at the same time can see where he’s wrong. It’s rough. Bella Ramsey is now a favorite of mine, she did a great job as Ellie, loved it!
Hi Mellverse you and me both ugly crying. The moment at the abandoned military hospital where Joel confessed to Ellie he had wanted to end his life was heartbreaking. But when he told Ellie he saved her and the way they looked at each other ❤😢. By the way that was a real Giraffe😂 . Until the next one 💜
Never played the game or knew about it, but seeing this show as well as watching your reactions, I am now definitely going to play it
The most emotional episode yet
You need to watch Narcos with him in it... he's amazing! Also Game of Thrones.. he came for only a few episodes and blows you away!
I just played TLOU2 and I'm terrified for the next season because that will be even more feelings, I hade to pause and rest while playing because I was so overwhelmed with feelings! the first game a season one was hard... but the second game is hardcore!!! You really should give it a try Mello!
I cry too Mello every time & seven out of the ten episodes had me in tears! I’m with Joel. There weren’t any guarantees & the whole situation in the hospital was sus from the beginning.
I remember you once saying you didn't finish watching GoT before, if true go back and watch s4 that introduces Pedro Pascal's Oberyn Martell character, you'll love him 😉
yay first to like keep up the work mell!
You need to make a shirt that says " And They Playin' The Music Bro". I would buy that shirt. Love your content.
FYI: The giraffe wasn't CGI, it was an actual one. This was always the fun part in the game when Joel goes all savage. They did a great job. I was disappointed that the door to the surgeon wasn't red lol but I also killed the two nurses in the game. I left nobody alive haha
Hey Mel, what are your thoughts on TLoU2? Im happy that this show did well and I hope season 2 does a lot of restructuring so it doesn’t piss off people all over again. 😂
Lol I personally hope they do. That game was so polarizing but I for one loved “almost” every minute. #TeamAbby
@@tionak I also hope it ends up being the same than the game with some changes here and there..
Atleast that's what they hinted in interviews.
Loved every minute of TLOU2 whether it was Ellie or Abby's part.
@@tionak I feel a lot of the complaints are just ppl hating on Abby but I loved it and how they make you question who's a hero in these situations
Great episode great also cant wait what anime your gonna start whatching 😊
@ 4:34 - did you notice that they re-created the EXACT SAME RV trailer as in the game?
the cgi looks so good because the giraffe is real^^
I actually loved this, and I’m looking forward to seeing the next season.
4:00 like that wasnt torture for marlene having to kill ur friend u know ur whole life men
This series overtook All of Us Are Dead and Kingdom as my favorite "zombie" TV series. It's a shame tho that the finale was only 40 minutes long and the series could've used one more ep just to show a lil bit more of the infected. 9.6/10 for me. Haven't played the games btw.
I don't think Bella played the game until after the show came out lol. They're just that fricken good!
Maybe you could do Star Trek reactions now? 🖖
Sometimes you have to bear the burden as an adult for your child. Joel is trying to protect her. Look how broken she is from David. Ellie is his daughter now.
12:19 NEEDS to be a meme lol
the giraffe wasnt cgi !!!
I was upset at the ending.. that’s gonna come back in such a bad way.
But hands down this has been the best show in a a long time and I very much look forward to season two.
As someone that hasn't played the game I thought the show was awesome. But I am a gamer so I was aware of some story beats just from game culture. If they ever put the game on Xbox, I'd buy it. This show confirms my belief that game adaptations should be done in the episode format. It fits the story better. Imagine trying to do this in a 2hr movie. It couldn't be done. Most games you spend 15 to 30 hours with characters and the story. It makes sense that longer, episodic runtime gives us more time to know the characters than a 2hr movie ever could. Now, if they could do a Red Dead Redemption adaptation of this level, I would be over the moon.
Happy st Patrick day 🍀🇮🇪💚🤍🧡
I struggled. I know big spoilers but not little details. I knew Joel and Ellie would make it to the hospital and what would happen after. I didn't know about David, and that episode was probably the one I most invested in Ellie being okay after. (I did get the feeling David was evil before Ellie was in the cage.) During this episode, moments where Ellie was quiet and withdrawn hurt. That trauma was sticking with her. I wish that I had connected more to stuff that was happening on the show instead of thinking of stuff coming up. Loved your reactions.
If you wanna see some more of Pedro I recommend Triple Frontier. Great movie with a fantastic cast 🙏🏼
Makes my city look somewhat well
Apparently in the scene where Joel is blowing his way through the hospital you can see a girl with a ponytail/braid running off and she’s apparently someone important in part 2 of the Last of Us game that people think will be playing a big role in season 2 of the show.
Also one of the nurses plays Abby in the game 😭😭
Troy baker did audition to play Joel mate.
I don't know if you know this, but Laura plays one of the nurses in the room with Ellie
I find it interesting that some people think Joel's choice at the end is hard, or controversial. I don't see it. And I love how the after-show segment comments that this is the easiest decision Joel ever made. There is no hesitation, no need for contemplation. The equation is simple: These people are going to murder his daughter, and NOTHING is going to stop him from getting her out of there. NOTHING.
And on every level, at every step, I think he made the right decision. Eff the Fireflies. They are freakin' hypocrites.
They claim Ellie would have chosen to sacrifice herself, but they can't truly know that, and they denied her that choice.
And even if she did get to voice her opinion, she's 14! Even in that post-apocalyptic world, she is not mature enough to make that decision.
There's also no reason to immediately murder her at 14 to cut her brain out. There's no ticking clock! Wait until she's 18, Ellie can make an informed decision as an adult.
They also placed Joel in an impossible position: Either let her die, or don't. Very easy choice.
Even the idea of the cure is clearly far from certain. This is not The Trolley Problem, because you don't know for sure that killing this girl is actually going to save anybody.
And finally, I even agree with him lying to her at the end. Joel has become Ellie's parent, and as parents, it is our job to protect and advocate for our children. Sometimes that requires us to keep certain things from them, at least temporarily.
Everyone else needs to take notes on how to do video game to live action adaptations.
Would love to watch you play part 2 on the channel
This was epic....dawg reaction and vid..like fr I'm going back to play the game again. Ellie is my fake daughter frfr
The giraffe was real! That's Nabo from the Calgary Zoo.
Hey you need to do a reaction of the bonus episode, which is the making of The Last of Us
Let’s go!
The whole show was nice and I never played it and I loveed it
The woman that gave birth to Elle is the voice of Elle in the game
Wow 🙏
I haven't played the game. I watched because Craig Mazin (creator of Chernobyl) created this and Pedro Pascal. You should watch his movie Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
he did with Nic Cage, funny funny funny. He also did a tv show called Narcos, it's about how the DEA helped bring down Pablo Escobar.
My only complaints with the show is i really think it shouldve been 10 episodes. Ik they had to trim the fat a bit but it did feel like the journey felt almost easy in a way. The people who have played the game know how difficult the journey actually was and how many infected there are out there. I felt like we didnt get to see quite enough of the infected as there should of been, outside of a few episodes. With that being said I thought they absolutely nailed everything else.
*Vague Spoiler for Season 2* I cant lie tho im nervous about the direction they go with season 2. If they stick to the game they will lose a massive amount of viewers most likely. I personally loved the second game so id be in the minority, and I understand the reasoning behind the direction they went with part 2, but i want this show to run more than 2 seasons and im worried it’ll just piss off the new viewers.
for whatever reason, when he said " a firefly hit him in the head with a gun" , I invisioned a literal firefly (the insect) flying into his head, and when he said "with a gun" the firefly in my head, had gun in his head. lol
I felt like the presentation of the final action sequence and its lead up was more morally ambiguous in the show. While playing the game, I felt like the Fireflies seemed mostly incompetent as an org and they were possibly killing Ellie just to grasp at straws. Tho the implications of Joel’s actions are heavy, I really identified with him and what he was doing.
In the show, I felt like it was much murkier. The FFs genuinely seem capable of accomplishing their goals and Joel’s actions seemed much more terrible/reprehensible, yet (partially) due to Pedro’s performance the entire sequence is so much more impactful and powerful, seeing our antihero swept away by his emotions and forced into becoming an evil figure murdering countless people to save the adopted daughter (his first port in the storm in literal decades) he’s just come to accept and love. It really made it so much more significant and heavy to me seeing the struggle between these two forces and the truly transcendent, subtle artistry of this interpretation. Throughout, the understated nature of it has complimented the amazing story they’d already established at such a high level.
Let’s be honest, this episode could’ve/should’ve been 30-45 minutes longer. But man, so well done.
Bro, just watched this today (sorry bro) but I am 100% with you through the whole thing dude. I am a platinum trophy holder (which still amazes me)
Only thing, give TLoU2 another try when S2 comes out, or before. (SPOILERS) Joel may be lost, but its the dang apocalypse, things happen, we lose who we love. Abby's arch made all the sense in the world. You would do the same, anyone would.
Who else peeped the single frame "follow me" flash @0:22?
YO MELL, HAVE YOU LISTENED TO ANY OF THE PODCASTS THAT ARE HOSTED BY TROY PARKER?? HBO MAX HAS A CHANNEL ON RUclips AND EVERY EPISODE HAS A PODCAST WHICH IS ANYWHERE FROM 35 MINUTES TO A LITTLE OVER AN HOUR!! HE SITS DOWN AND TALKS TO CRAIG AND NEAL ABOUT WHY THEY DID DIFFERENT THINGS IN THE SERIES AS OPPOSED TO THE GAME!! IT'S ACTUALLY QUITE INTERESTING AND I WENT BACK AND WATCHED EACH EPISODE AND THEN AFTER EACH INDIVIDUAL EPISODE LISTENED TO THE PODCAST FOR THAT EPISODE!! IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SOMETHING LIKE THAT IT WOULD BE KIND OF COOL FOR YOU TO DO BECAUSE I THINK YOU WOULD APPRECIATE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT ARE DISCUSSED AND THE INFORMATION THAT THEY GIVE!!!
I wish this ending wasn’t spoiled for me. After I watched episode 2 I looked up some videos talking about the episode and someone said “this is an interesting evolution where we go from the Joel we see in this episode to the Joel who literally says ‘fuck the cure if it means Ellie has to die.’” So I was able to figure out how the finale will go down after episode 2.
