I am 7 year old live in Australia. I want to say thank you for your video, it easy for me to learn khmer. hopefully you make more video about khmer language so I can learn more
I think I'm the only Cambodian who will never successfully learn the Khmer Alphabet no matter how many times you teach me. I was born in America and is actually fluent in Khmer, but can't seem to learn it how to read.
Rachel Ouk you are not alone. I,m Khmer from Vietnam, I came to the US when I was 10 year old I,m fluent in Khmer and Vietnamese, but I can't never learn how to read Khmer
I don’t feel as lonely. I am pretty fluent since I was raised speaking Khmer in the house but I was never taught the writing system. I really want to because it’ll be fun but... learning to read is so ugh...
I'm a new student thank you for the lessons. i have a small tip is it possible to show your mouth while pronouncing the words that would be a great help thanks a bunch Winston
Winston, for Cambodian sounds, mouth movement wouldn't be of significant help. You have to listen very, very carefully and repeatedly, and then as you repeat each letter or word, listen to yourself, listen to the letter or word again, compare the difference and do that again and again until you get it. What actually helped me a lot was learning how to read. If a word isn't clear to me, I just look it up and I can read it and then get the proper pronunciation.
Finally! Omg it is easier than I make it seem to be...thank you very much for a great video! My 6 yrs old thought it was my voice in this video lol...she said mommy is that you I said no it is someone else she said you and her sound alike.
My Oh My... I been searching high and low...Cross through every thick jungle in Asia...And I believe I finally found my Khmer Language Sensei... Thanks you Khmer sis...Please keep the lessons coming.
Cambodia language is not focus much to use with tongue or mouth just you can pronoun it correctly with sound "Or" (the blue alphabet) and "O" (Red alphabet) and must remember it. As I am Cambodian origin I thought your pronunciation a bit hard to listen and followed such you are Cambodian that born in the other country that is not Cambodia. Your pronunciation just like foreigner speak Khmer language.
Green Jasper Green Jasper Cambodia language is not focus much to use with tongue or mouth just you can pronounce it correctly with sound "Or" (the blue alphabet) and "O" (Red alphabet) and must remember it. First, I want to thank You for Your excellent introduction to the khmer-alphabet, it is really great ! Secondly I have two questions: a) The first and the third, as well as the second and the fourth column (until the 4s row) seem to have the same voiced/voiceless consonant, they differ, as it is presented, only in the additive vowel "aw" and "owh". So the question: this additive vowel remains if you join the characters into words,i.e. do you pronounce them always? b) Some chracters for example the "r" look the same as in the Thai-Language. Could you explain this ancestry ? Are the roots based on the old khmer-empire, so that it influenced the thai-alphabet ?
1."The first and the third, as well as the second and the fourth column (until the 4s row)" The first and the third column have basically the same consonant but because they are in two different groups, ex: group 1/blue, group2/red, they react to vowels differently. For example let's take the first vowel of the Khmer language "Sarak Aa". this vowel makes the first column of the first row pronounce "Kaa" but it makes the third column of the first row pronounce "Kia". This is also applied to the second and fourth column. So in conclusion all the alphabet of group 1/blue respond to the first vowel with 'Aa'. Group 2/red respond to the first vowel with 'ia'. 2. I took Thai for 3 years and I also noticed how similar the two writings and pronunciations are. Khmer script definitely had influenced on Thai writings, but I don't have a lot of knowledge on this history to tell you more about it. maybe you can do research. 3. That's a beautiful verse! Is it your favorite?
cvjarot Thank You again for your quick and kind response ! at 1) so, as I understand, the "family" of the consonant influences the pronounciation of the vowels at 2) research is always a long journey at 3) the whole bible is a jewel, given us for salvation in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. So it is really difficult to decide, which verse is the favourite one. There may be always one verse for a special circumstance in life so that it shines as a bright light in darknesses that may surround us.
cvjarot Here is a historical fact: All of Thailand (today), Loa and Vietnam once a part of Khmer territories up to around 1200s when there were conflicts in China (Dynasty fight Dynasty) that cause the losing Dynasty to get away from China to avoid persecution. The massive exodus of the offshoot of the losing Dynasty overwhelm the Khmers and eventually formed to be the Siamese and Laotion, what we know today as Lao and Thai when it changed its country name from Siam to Thailand in 1939. The exodus from China into Khmer territories kept on coming after 1200s, especially during the Ming Dynasty conflict (1300-1644). The conflicts in China what caused the offshoots of the Dynasty to flee China into Khmer territories. The Siamese are offshoots of the Ming Dynasty and they came from China during most of the conflicts in China, especially during much of the Ming Dynasty conflict (right around AD 1600 and possibly even much earlier) and then again after the fall of the Ming Dynasty (AD 1644). The Siamese is better known today as Thais when it changed its country name from Siam to Thailand in 1939. Similarly, the Laotions also came from China and they are also the offshoots of the Ming Dynasty; and this is even more true for the Vietnamese: they did not exist on the current land until the height of the Ming Dynasty conflict (AD 1600) and again after the fall of the Ming Dynasty (AD 1644). They migrated southward during much of the Ming Dynasty conflict and again after the fall of the Ming Dynasty to avoid persecution. Hope that helps.
Thank youuu so much for these! My husband is Khmer but he never got to learn how to read the written language, and I'd like to learn with him. It's very daunting, but your pronunciations and instruction are already easier to understand than the apps I've tried.

Iam interested in learning languages. Some of the Khmer letters look a bit similar to Thai, but sound completely different.
It’s cause my people and there’s have a language rooted in Hindu/Sanskrit
The scripts share a common ancestor, but the languages are from different families, that's why the characters look similar but sound different.

Yes khmer alphabet influence many writing system I believed including Jewish in the middle east aka West Asia(check it out).
That makes sense why purebred Khmers are generally darker than the Thai counterparts.

Is there a difference between the pronunciation at (3:20 and 3:53) and (3:33 and 4:07)?
This is similar to Sanskrit, ka kha ga gha... this is almost same from Tibet, to Combodia.. Asia was more connected in ancient times.

Is it of a brahmi script family, the way it's arranged is so similar to devnagari hindi script.
I think the root of Khmer script is from India.
Khmer script is from India, but not Devnagari, it's from the Dravidian scripts of South India.
