Stupendous. I heard CSO play this under Solti at San Francisco Opera House. My god!!! They blew the roof right off the building! The audience stood up and cheered for a long time. It was just thrilling! I've never heard Mahler sound like this before or after.
This might be the most masterful and commanding performance of the finale of Mahler 5 that's I've heard. The Chicago brass step up to the plate in a way that many other brass sections cannot; it's not like other brass sections can't play it, it's just that when Chicago does it they do it with that extra something. Bookmarking this recording for sure.
"Brass section not keeping up". Really? I've performed this symphony a number of times and you trolls can put your two cents in all you want, but every orchestral musician on this planet would give up a year in their life just to sit in one rehearsal with CSO and Solti in their heyday. Herseth, Clevenger, Jacobs, Kleinhammer, Friedman...the list goes on, and I'm a humble bass player who knows the real juice!!!!!!!
As a bass player, I’m willing to give 10 years of my life span just to play this symphony. It’s unequivocally challenging and technically demanding. Kudos to you for playing this several times. I won’t be able to play this for a long time.(well, I have only been playing for 2 years) However it’s one of my favorite symphonies to listen to.
This is quite a good performance. It's too bad that Decca (London) recorded the orchestra in a way that makes it sound harsh and unbalanced. They did this to a lot of Solti/CSO recordings from that time, and it's not really an accurate presentation of the sound of the Chicago Symphony.
I agree with the previous post. I lived in Chicago at the time and attended many concerts. While Orchestra Hall's acoustics were problematic back then, the recordings don't match even that. It's as though they placed the mikes way too close. There's no sound of the hall in the recordings.
And this is the reason why I hate Mahler's 5th symphony. This movement just drags forever when you just think the climax is going to happen mahler just presses the silence button. Like this whole music is a big troll and a tease. I hate it. Does someone agree?

What a movement - and the brass

You should try listening to the World Orchestra for Peace recording. That's my personal favorite.
The triumphant ending is what I love about Mahler - like the 7th
@@julianruiz8524 the 1st clarinet player is the same.
@@allwinds3786 Yup 👍. Larry Combs
@@julianruiz8524 I was having a hard time pulling out his name from my memory, Thanks
My God this is good. ❤
Full warmth clarity
and malarian sound.
Solti really nails it 😮
This recording can be found in the Mahler - The Symphonies (1992) collection by the same performers as well.
A bad recording of the Chicago Symphony is an outstanding recording of most others; thank you for the immense power to work with this powerful work.

Almost whimsical - and yet a rondo which reaches 13 minutes in length
Adagietto should have been the finale. It's absolutely breathtaking, while this one is kinda "meh"
Mahler be like:
"You want de fucken climaxo? Oh noo... You wont get your climaxo you dumb listener."
I love Mahler but this movement just sucks.
Only Leinsdorf and the Boston were better. This is just a tad slurry
