He didn't. But, he has most certainly embraced it with open arms. I forget the channel, but there is a great 30 minute interview with him on RUclips. You could probably just search (judge fleischer interview). He's very passionate about his work and you can tell he genuinely cares about each and every person who appears before him. I'm sorry I couldn't link you directly. Android is being a pain about pasting anything into comments. Since you have to tap-hold it thinks you want to search for something. It's typical Google stuff.

And, how to say, for a lot of people once you go into the legal system they never really recover, and I think the judge is trying very hard with a young man with mental health issues to avoid the kid's initial crossing over "into the legal system."

My dad proceeded to give me a severe beat down with scrapes and bruises all over my face and arms..However, my dad felt so guilty for beating me, he actually threw me in his car and drove to the police station to turn himself in. Long story short, I ended up getting a lecture from the detective and was told that the next time I acted up that I would be thrown into a juvenile home. Nothing happened to my dad. This was in 1984. A few years ago, I did check myself into a mental ward and it helped me so much. I met my therapist and my psychiatrist through them. I am going to be needing treatment because of my issues, and the fact that dad died was of course a serious blow. I am still grieving, and I know that I will be for many years. To make a long story short, if you feel that you need to check yourself into a mental ward, do it! I am proud of this defendant for thinking about it, and I love this judge.

drink and drive and kill 6 months and $2000 fine
WTF is wrong with our system????????
this judge is spot on and such a great support for people trying and show promise.
dealing with trauma or such is not easy or a smooth road and the road is going to be bumpy and hard but as the judge said it is far better to take the steps to take care of yourself than be forced to. I hope this young man is able to deal with whatever the demons or trauma is and go to welding school and move so far past this situation that people are absolutely shocked of this.
the situation about the assault is horrible. the kid said that he was supposed to be going to the mental hospital, the mother called the cops to help take him to the mental hospital and also said that he flails his arms around when he has "episodes" and may "strike her". throw it out and help the young man get the help he needs. the young man told the judge he has problems and wants to get help. the judge is trying to make heads and tails of it to help the young man move forward. as Jillian said it is so easy to take someone to get help now and not arrest them and take them to jail. this is an absolute failure of the PD to protect and serve. SO HEARTBREAKING.
The judge and crew there are amazing!!!!! so much compassion and love in that courtroom ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Should the young man choose to walk the line set before him, his journey to recovery will involve work that will be far more painful than serving time. Less than 6% make it a year clean and sober. Godspeed. He has his whole life ahead of him.

Wow, that was fantastic. I mean what a difference that could make in this kids life. Could you imagine doing all that's asked of him and then the judge helps him get a job on top of that? Amazing.

God bless you Your Honor. I truly believe all judges have a place in their hearts for the community weather or not they have committed a crime. That's why they call it corrections. It's not to be mean though there are consequences in the system but they want you to learn from it and grow positively. Some people just don't learn though and that's when the judge will bring his wrath down. God be with you your honor.

We have such an epidemic of needed resources for mental evaluation and I think it was very telling that these resources were available. Joe is not the answer as it will just keep happening. I applaud the judge he always does the right thing in the face of pressure.
I hope he is involved in a lot of changes in our legal system

Anyone needing hospitalisation, doesn't have such clarity of thought & speach! Something is seriously wrong here! Competency evaluation needed! Stinks to me! (after 30yrs healthcare career)

Wow when I was 17 I had a judge like this. And he is like a dad to me. You don't get this anymore these days.
A person who needs help is being denied help and arrested. I would love to see if what he was arrested for even happened.
I have developmental disabilities that cause me issues with behaviors and self care and communication issues. I get easier frustrated. To see a person want help and be arrested is sad. For me at 17 my judge was upset the doctors diagnosis me with the things they did and yet the sad thing is they misdiagnosess me. And the judge knew that and wanted to help me. He fight for me and even switched doctors for me so I can get better help. We took me for walks and even help me with getting a part time job I have issues with but I tried to work.

Great Judge. Sometimes he’s a little too soft on the repeat criminals but compared to others he’s fantastic. We need more Judges that care about the victims and I believe this Judge does care.

I adore this interaction. The title of this video alone immediately filled me with vitriol and led me to dehumanize the aggressor. I wasn’t just expecting-but hoping-for a verbal thrashing and a "he goes with you" moment. However, Fleisher flips the paradigm and confronts this individual with compassion. I can’t speak for the kid, but that kind of exchange seems much more conducive to a favorable outcome for everyone involved.

I think he did assault the mom , she was pretty detailed in her original statement on the scene going as far as to say he put a knife to her throat. The man needs help and to stay away from the mom before he hurts her. This judge goes above and beyond to help the ppl in his courtroom. How many judges would personally help someone get a trade

The way that judge treats people should be the norm!!! Judges should have to train with him and watch how he treats the people!!
