  • How much do you know about Japanese dining and tableware? I actually know nothing when I first came to Japan except for the rice bowl, soup bowl and chopsticks. 😅 I remember few times when I tried to set up a traditional Japanese meal at home 3 years ago, my husband would tell me that I arranged the dishes in a wrong way. That rice should be here and soup should be there, etc.
In this video, I will share with you what I learned about Japanese table set up, basic components, tableware names and it's uses. You might remember some in this video the next time you visit a Japanese restaurant. You can also use this video as a guide to pull up traditional Japanese dining in your own home. 😊

Usually in the Netherlands the traditional way is to place the meat on individuale plates and the veggies and boiled potatoes in the pan on the table and everyone helps themselves. Perhaps there is a bowl of gravy. Or everything is mashed together (called stamppot) and placed in one pan on the table. But we do have a lot of forgeign dishes as well, especially Indonesian and some Suriname dishes as well and we love Chinese take aways where the trays are put in the centre and everyone helps themselves.
Personally I eat a lot of Japanese (having lived there and in normal times go back once or twice a year) so I usually make individual plates even if we eat western style foods. It looks nicer I think and better for portion control hahaha But because I cook a lot of Japanese I have a lot of individual plates for washing up. I sometimes feel guilty about that especially since it is my husband who usually cleans up after dinner.

Hi Tamara. Wow! Your comment is very informative too. Thank you so so much for sharing. I cannot agree more about portion control and the dish washing in Japan. It is very time consuming. Haha Netherland’s dining style seems to be way more easier and fun. Like a feast on the table that everyone helps themselves. I also find it interesting that you put the pan on the table instead of serving plates. 😊

Such a gorgeous tableware collection! And all those different dishes in different sizes for different uses - such a great excuse to collect pottery!
I'm in Sweden, we mostly serve family style - all the food in their pots and pans (or in bowls and on serving dishes) in the middle of the table, and everyone have their own plates, and serve themselves food, or ask the one who sits closest to the dish to spoon it up for them. Very relaxed and unceremonial!

It is indeed a Japanese culture to love.Another advantage is that if something breaks, it’s easier, because you don’t need to replace with exact same design. You can replace it with any of your choice. 😊

Japanese Dining 101 - Learn the Basic Traditional Table Arrangement | Tableware Names and Functions
I lived in Japan for several years on and off since 1967. I was taught by several different Japanese families that the first thing you eat is a one small mouth full of rice out of respect for the primary food source of Japan. This was also true when I stayed at a dozen Buddhist Temples.

My family and I are initiating to change our diet to mostly Japanese food. We are an international family and so we cook all sorts of dishes. But we always agree that eating at a Japanese table gives us so much pleasure. I am so happy to discover your vlog because it has given me the knowledge on what to buy. Individualism is so celebrated in Japan, even on the eating table. I love the idea that for everyone, the dishes can be different!

In my country (UAE 🇦🇪) and my origin country (yemen 🇾🇪) we make food in different large bowls (if there are atleast 4 people) and large sharing plates. And if we are planning to store the food for later, we eat it on a smaller plate, but if we have guests over, we all consume on the same sharing plate, but some dishes like salad cant be eaten by the same bowl (for salad) also we eat mostly by hand because its a tradition that our ancestors do, and we eat on the floor (because its healthier as some say that it will help you digest because sitting on the chair makes the gravity pull your legs and not help with digestive system) and most of the time the food is spread on the floor and we use a sufra (large cloth) to place under the food and some families own a low table but most prefer the floor. And when we eat we eat quickly (but chew well) and we don't fill our stomach all the way because it encourages laziness, and some sitting positions are considered rude, make you feel more lazy and might give you a heart burn.

I've seen several anime wherein one of the characters will be cooking something (usually stew or soup) and will spoon some of it into a tiny little bowl to taste.
What kind of bowls are those teensy little bowls the characters are using to sample their cooking? Seems way more efficient and less work than using a different spoon every time I want to see how my soup is coming along...
