To anyone struggling with alocasia, I've tried EVERYTHING including pon & leca, cabinet, bathroom, bright light, mid light, with no luck until I started planting them into moss (this includes mature plants, not just props!). Bright evening or morning light, with really week fertiliser & CONSTANT pest checks and I have a dozen leaves on my Frydek, which previously only had 2 decent leaves at a time for about a year. Haven't heard anyone talking about this so don't want to gatekeep!!

I am really new to being a plant parent...And I I have 3 different alocasia and have had no problems. The only thing I can say that I may be done different is that I do grow them in clear vases my soil medium is akadama with Coco coir and Miracle-Gro potting mix. I make sure that they stay moist on the soil and humid

For everyone struggling with Alocasia, follow these steps:
-Clean Alocasia roots from all previous substrate
-Plant Alocasia into substrate with a minimum particle size of 5mm (1/5 inch) to ensure free air circulation around the roots
    - water as much as you want, but at least every 7 to 10 days indoors and depending on pot size
Use Coco cunks, pumice, Lava rock and zeolithe for the mix, pure pumice works too

I'd love to see your wishlist! While I adore my Jacklyn and Platinum, my Scalprum is an absolute delight! It struggled at first, even next to the humidifier, so I put it in a humidity box for a couple of months. It's been a month and a half since I took her out, and she's given me two leaves! The first has hardened off nearly black and the second is still sizing up and it's the most gorgeous shiny lizard green! And while some of the original leaves are looking a bit spent, they haven't browned. Whenever a plant is struggling, I put it in a humidity box. I'm not a fan of cabinets just because I like my plants too feel accessible - so a couple of plastic totes take on the jobs of rehabbing and propagating anyone I can't do in the kitchen window.

If you want more full plants I can recommend keeping multiple plants in one pot. Especially with the jewel alocasias (the ones with thicker leaves that stay low) because they don’t grow as fast as the long types. When you repot your alocasias and find corms, use those to propagate but be a bit hesitant with dividing. In my experience the plant is more happy with brothers/sisters 😉

Yes, your wish list would be most interesting!
Funny: I bought two little Alocasias with no name on them for just 5€ each about a month ago. Turns out one is the Silver Dragon, and the other one the A.heterophylla! Imagine me feeling very lucky right now! The Dragon´s Breath grows very quickly, I have it in soil, upsized the pot already, will need to do it again soon... and in there are four little plants! No cabinet, no special handling, I´m a newbie to Alocasias. But I had houseplants for more than 40 years now, I guess I can handle this fascinating Genus. (Fingers crossed.) My favourite so far is the Purple Sword (A.lauterbachiana), which grows like a weed, getting bigger every day, and having that very pretty dark purple backside of the leaves.
And oh well... you, Claire, were the inspiration for getting Alocasias! Thank you so very much!💚

Ah, I’ve just ordered my first Alocasia today, and that’s going to be a Zebrina ❤ It looks to me as if she’s not the most showy type, since Alocasias tend to look so wild oftentimes, but I just love the simplicity of her look so much! I’m also getting ready to take a plunge into semi-hydro for her sake, following your example 🙃 and if I’ll have any luck growing her, I’ll consider a Tigrina and Stingray next..I think I have a type 😂

Re: your fun fact about Alocasia Jacklyn/Tandurusa, to my understanding Jacklyn is not the person who discovered this alocasia. It had been known to locals and researchers for a long time before Jacklin but it was popularized and sold online internationally by a seller named Jacklin. There was some controversy on if they were poached but apparently it was legal because the area she took them from weren’t protected lands. In the beginning of the pandemic, I think most of the plants that were sold were taken from the wild but I think most of the ones sold in stores now are tissue culture.

I have a frydek that relentlessly gets spider mites, and no matter how many times I cut it back, it gets them again. So my theory is that the spider mites are laying eggs in the brown papery parts on the base of the plant, and so I removed all of that off of one of them and treated it and I’m waiting to see the new growth to see if the mites continue.

All of its leaves are facing down because it's getting too much light! And my melo...my melo, I love my melo and you're right, the camera doesn't do it justice. I got mine in the winter and had so many issues with it, but it is finally doing well outside. I have some corms propagating inside and a number of corms sprouted with the mother plant as well as a random corm I didn't notice that got potted up with my Easter cactus back in spring! Love your Alocasias! My Jacklyn is extremely sensitive and I’m about to give up on her…she’s been on the brink of death twice and I think the next time I’m not having it, I’m letting her go. I have a sinuata and I love it. I chopped it back a while ago so it’s not as big as I’d like it to be. My dragon scale and it gives me sport variegation from time to time. My daughter was the one that noticed it about three or four years ago. It did not have any when I purchased it so it was a total surprise. I do agree with you about the Melo, can’t describe how interesting it is, you just have to get one. I’m kind of surprised you don’t have a Cuprea…they are so weird looking in a good way…and yes, the corms are very rewarding. It's also my guests's favourite most of the time. I got two alocasias Dragon's Breath babies at the end of last week and damn, they are already giving me a bit of trouble, they are super droopy even tho I've repotted them in Fluval Strat. They are at the bottom of my list right now just because of that, hahaha. I'm also in love with my baby variegated bambino, she is giving me a third leaf and it makes me very happy!

    • @mwatson4970
      @mwatson4970 Месяц назад

Caladiums usually have much thinner leaves, and the veins are minimal or very fine and flexible. Also Alocasia typically are more solid colors on front and back, while caladium usually have brighter colors and mottling.

Ii don't understand why RUclipsrs have such a problem with pests. I have over 100 plants and i never gey pests. My plants are all grouped together as i only have limited windows. I must just be lucky i guess

I would suggest if you want to buy more Alocasia that you invest in a company in the UK that manufactures air conditioning because of global warming everyone is going to need an air conditioner . And you will have more money to buy plants then you will have lots of money and be rich and can lots more plants ! It is 91°F today
