My dad owned movie theaters, and drive-ins for 50 years. I'm 56, and I used to have all of the actual posters of day of the dead, and a bunch of horror movie posters from Universal, paramount ect.
This October, my mother and I, for my birthday, are heading to Gettysburg. And now, thanks to THIS video, we're now stopping at the cemetery and museum along the way! It's a straight shot from Cleveland, Ohio!!
Hi Jacob! The J.C. Penney store moved from its original spot. The movie theatre and the store below it were where it was. Safe travels to you! Thanks for coming to our area!
My mom got her ears pierced at that mall and did all her back to school shopping there too back then. Many of her friends were extras in the movie. Crazy to think how movies used to be much more of a community event ( obviously part of it was due to the lower budget and need of extras to get the swarm of zombies) Edited for clarity
I’ve been a BIG fan of the Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. Day of the Dead was such an underrated film. Hope you have a great time at the Monroeville Mall Jacob!
I remember seeing night of living dead in 1968 and a place called the Skyview driving. My roommate went berserk in the parking lot. That’s how frightened she was. You brought back memories. Thank you.
The zombie you asked about in the Romero room was from the opening scene in Day of the Dead. An underrated flick. Chilly Billy's daughter is the lead in it. Also the "chef" from Mr. Roger's is wandering around the mine. He is dispatched in the movie.
If there's one thing I've learned from watching ten-ish years of your videos, it's this... that you have some of the worst luck when it comes to places being closed, things breaking down, things not working properly, or things being out of order when you show up to film...what I appreciate about that is that you're honestly doing a great pubkic service in showing how broken america truly is. For example, The Monroeville mall is in such sad shape. I'm amazed they're even open with so many stores closed down. Reminds me of many of your videos where places people would love to go and do certain things, probably should just skip it because they'll get disappointed. So, thank you for honestly and literally risking it all for the content despite those factors. Because you could easily just scrap it and then no one would be the wiser. Just another thing to appreciate about you 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much for doing this video!!! I am a huge Romero fan, its in my bucket list to get there, but I am in the UK so here's to hoping! We have Weekend of the Dead each year here, actors from Night Dawn and Day attend, as does Savini! 🎉
35:09 Because of the way JC Penny's sign print was. My little sister when she was very young used to call it JC Lenny's because the Blue color that makes the "P" made it look like a lower case L.
Seen that movie several times big fan of the original the mall experience was cool also. I'll be waiting for your experience on the solar eclipse and more with you and Jen 😊
Monroeville Mall was my local mall-I remember when George Romero was filming the movie! We Pittsburghers are so proud of George! My Yorkie puppywas born in Monroeville near the mall-she was a DOTD baby!
From a fan in Butler Pennsylvania, thanks buddy for representing us again. Darn it, had I known that you were in Evans City, I would have bought ya lunch! Thanks for all that you do.
They closed all our Toys R us didn’t even know one still exsisted 😮 was sad cause great place for Christmas shopping . Unfortunately hard to find good toy store without shopping on internet 😢
Morning Jacob thanks for sharing this 🤓📸 like the old 1969 Night of the Living Dead its a classic, before my time lol i was born 1976. But i love anything spooky. Thanks again. Awesome.
that JC Penney was not where it was originally back in the 70s....it was actually where the movie theatre was... there was an ice skating rink where the food court was...it was actually the place to go in the 70s. Don Sofer was one of the mall owners I believe. Thanks for coming to my hometown.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, when I was 13 or 14 (2013-2015) my dad showed me the movie and took us to the filming location! We went around October so it made it even creepier going on that road lol
Hi Carpet Bagger ! Did anyone else out there press the like button on the video as soon as it started ?The cemetery scene was great and the museum was awesome!
I really liked the glow in the dark mural. ♥ I haven't seen Night of the Living Dead yet but it's definitely something I plan on watching the week. : ) Thanks for taking us to the awesome museum!
My Mom and I loved collecting S&H green stamps from the grocery store. Then we would take the books of stamps to an S&H green stamps store to redeem items. One thing I remember getting were pretty white dishes and a soup tureen to match.❤
YES!!! when you asked us in the Kennywood vid to let you know where we'd like to see you go around Pitts, this is EXACTLY what i meant to ask you to do!
Before Night of the Living Dead in 1968, there was the Vincent Price movie "The Last Man on Earth" which in turn was based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel "I am Legend" where a plague has devastated most of humanity, turning them into blood-thirsty vampire-like creatures that act more like zombies in most cases, though some of them are capable of moving faster, and even can talk and plan intelligently.
In mid 70s my local library had a film copy of night of the living dead. I checked it out several times and had horror movie nights. Great movie and good old times.
The creepiest mall i went to was Greengate Mall right before Christmas 2003 or so. It was going to shut down in the new year. Lots of empty stores, no Christmas decorations, very somber Christmas music playing. I expected zombies or serial killers to come out of hiding!
The Evil Dead was filmed in my hometown of Morristown,TN. We watched when we were in high school at a friend’s house not far from where it was filmed. Scared us half to death!! 😂
Jacob! You went to the cemetery on the perfect day! It was the same kinda cloudy in the movie! Or maybe it was because the movie was black and white... I don't care. It looks the same! Yay!! This movie changed my life. As a new little horror freak in the 70s, this movie put the image in my head of being eaten ALIVE. Thank you for this. I'm fairly close to this place as I am a Maryland native. But sadly have never been...
Wow. That museum was huge. I really enjoyed the in-depth research of the movies. Although Jacob talking about watching Thriller from his highchair made me feel old.
In April 2001 I went to a comic book horror sci Fi convention across from the Monroeville mall got to check out the mall for hours truly a joy for a fan of dawn of the dead and down town Pittsburgh a awesome week
"I don' want to grow up, I'm a Toys "R" Us Kid. There's a million toys at Toys "R" Us that I can play with, from Bikes to trains, to Video Games. It's the Biggest Toy Store there is. Gee Whiz! I don't want to grow up, cause maybe if I did, I couldn't be a Toys "R" Us Kid!"
This reminded me of how much Romero inspired a whole genre and helped created so much popular culture indirectly. Without him, we would not have gotten The Last of Us, Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, and The Walking Dead. He helped push the horror we love today.
They just had Living Dead Weekend in June 2024. It was a really cool experience. Creepshow and Creepshow 2 cast, Night of the Creeps and of course the Night, Dawn and Day of the dead movie cast was there. Actually met and spoke to " Helicopter Zombie" from Dawn of the Dead Jim Krut super nice guy. Got to meet Russell Streiner at a Horror Realm here in Pittsburgh and he too was very nice and it was just amazing to hear the stories he told The Creepshow house isn't far from the mall. It was used in the original with Tom Atkins
Day of the Dead is definitely worth a watch, and possibly my favorite of the Romero movies. I'd also recommend Land of the Dead as a satisfying conclusion to the arc of Romero's zombies.
I was very young when the movie came out. My brother, the smart a-- took me to see it. I have night mares about that movie. Yucky!! I am 68yrs old now, I can't believe it still cares me. Excuse me if I don't watch this episode. Excuse me have fun all.
I had the same experience as a kid. I loved scary stuff when I was about 2, then The Nightmare Before Christmas came out when I was 3 and scared the ever loving shit out of me and I avoided all scary stuff for years, going so far as to avoid halloween stuff in stores. Needless to say things have changed and I love horror and all the scary, spooky things now
I think a cool thing in Pittsburgh would be the Cathedral of Learning. Check out the famous World Series photo from there. Plus the Forbes Field remnants still are viewable.
My dad owned movie theaters, and drive-ins for 50 years. I'm 56, and I used to have all of the actual posters of day of the dead, and a bunch of horror movie posters from Universal, paramount ect.
Want to sell sone stuff
This October, my mother and I, for my birthday, are heading to Gettysburg. And now, thanks to THIS video, we're now stopping at the cemetery and museum along the way! It's a straight shot from Cleveland, Ohio!!
My bf and I work very closely with Living Dead Weekend and the museum. Glad you stopped by
I'm coming up from upper northeast tennessee next June 2025 Eric

Return of the living dead 1985 that's a classic as well.
@@matthewfarmer2520 Absolutely true, Matt!
Of course, it's a classic because it's the first zombie movie
They're coming to get you, Bar-bar-a!
You know it is a chilly day if a tear coming down Jacob cheeks 😂 love the blue crocs
I remember seeing night of living dead in 1968 and a place called the Skyview driving. My roommate went berserk in the parking lot. That’s how frightened she was. You brought back memories. Thank you.

Pretty cool! Thanks for posting. Drive safely.
The zombie you asked about in the Romero room was from the opening scene in Day of the Dead. An underrated flick. Chilly Billy's daughter is the lead in it. Also the "chef" from Mr. Roger's is wandering around the mine. He is dispatched in the movie.
Well that was fun!! Enjoyed this a lot!!❤
That display is “Dr. Tongue” from Day Of The Dead. I used to have the mask of that when I was a youngster.
i am so happy you used my suggestions! so cool to see the mall again and the filming location i never seen in person. great job jacob!

Thank you Jacob for another trip with yea.

Great museum a lot of history❤❤❤❤❤❤
I knew as soon as the vid started that the cemetery looked familiar. How cool.
I posted this in the Living Dead Facebook group. Thank you for this video!
From a fan in Butler Pennsylvania, thanks buddy for representing us again. Darn it, had I known that you were in Evans City, I would have bought ya lunch! Thanks for all that you do.
Sad that internet. Has taking over mall shopping as the mall was the fun place to go back in the day ❤❤❤❤❤❤
There should be a dark ride totally with zombies!

George Romero has some great movies over the years
Cool video Jacob love those movies. Take care my friend and safe travels.
That’s wild about Mr Rogers I never knew that story ❤❤❤
I loved watching Night of the Living Dead in the theater at Rifftrax Live. It was a lot of fun.

It's a must visit if you are a horror movie fan and you're in the Pittsburgh area.
In that mall, where’s the Crocs shoe shop?
Love your videos. Might be the only time I ever get to visit some of these places.
Yay, finally some scary Halloween content…. Spooky me baby, spook me 😂
Neil Gaiman wrote a great short story about voodoo style zombies called Bitter Grounds in the collection Fragile Things. 💜

I saw Night of the Living Dead many years ago, it scared me terribly and it still bothers me. 😱
Really did your research on this one ! A few of my favorite places here
Again, even I am a zombie until I get that first cup of coffee! 😊
I've seen this material covered in another vlog but yours was excellent! Thank you!
Hi Jacob one one the best movies ever..!!! I have loved this visit.. Very Interesting XXX
BRAINS!
It's a bit ironic you found a re-risen shell of Toys R Us. I'd call that a real zombie sighting

The annual ‘Blobfest’ in Phoenixville and the movie theater used in the movie ‘The Blob’ is also in Pennsylvania.
George Romero is my favorite director and got the chance to meet him in 2015 @ spooky empire in Orlando
Looks amazing 😮
I like to call them 'Slender-Mannequins' 😂
