When I first got this as a freebie with my MIDI keyboard, I thought "Oh it's just a ROMpler with some old fashioned bread and butter sounds. I'll probably never use it", but it's turned out to be very useful. Sometimes I spend half an hour trying to dial in a synth sound with another VST and then I find a better version of what I was trying to create already existed in this rompler's preset bank! It's great for layering with other sounds, as its presets have been designed to simply "work" straight out of the box.
I also got it as a freebie with my MIDI keyboard and you're are right, it's very useful straight out of the box! Very versatile.

Great! that is the way to introduce sounds from a synth. I use Xpand!2 and some expansions, it is a instrument with lot of possibilities and very useful in a broad sort of production tasks.
I am try to figure out if the xpansions packs out there are created using the instrument default sound patches as base, or if there is some way to add extra basic waves in Xpand!2.

This is a great vst however the bit I don't get is the really, really tiny triangle buttons to move to the previous/next patch (without going through the dropdown menu) or am I missing a shortcut?
No you're not missing a shortcut. The triangle buttons and the dropdown menu are the only ways to select presets. If this VST gets an update, it should get a preset browser.
This collection is very useful because the very nice in sounds Xpand2 is not well sorted at all and therefore it is not easy to access the sounds. It's a pity but one may waste a lot of time to find a sound he liked previously.
I can agree with that. This plugin needs a new and modern preset browser.

I gotta tell ya folks, I'm hella late to the vst party, but I respect how they have revolutionized (and democratized) the recording studio. If you have a decent Mac/PC, audio interface and microphone, you already have a seriously powerful recording environment. As of 5/17/2020 Plugin Boutique has discounted Xpand!2 down to $14.99 USD (£12.38, €13.85, ¥1,605). I don't own it yet but is this a fair price? Or a steal?

Xpand!2 is a very popular plugin that I think is well worth its original price. So at $14.99 it’s a no-brainer. ☺️
Just got it for 5 bucks on pluginbotique! Go take a look, there is a sale on most of AIR’s products. They’re all hellllla cheap. You can get vacuum pro for five bucks as well

You usually download it from the developer's website or from a retailer's website. CD/HDD/Flash Drive is a very rare delivery method these days.

Expand 2 is decent but the tiny ui has me never using it. Air do not update their older plugins.
I agree. It's a shame that it hasn't beed updated.
