  • Aired on NBC-TV on April 25, 1966. Audio recorded from WRC-TV. Video likely did not survive. NBC policy in the 1960's was to reuse the expensive 2-inch video tapes which were used to pre-record the Tonight Show program several hours before it aired.
In the last half hour of the program, Carol sang the lyrics to the Ellington tune "In a Mellow Tone". She recorded a scat version on an LP..

The only way this clip could have sounded better, Roger, is if I lived in the New York City area at the time I recorded it, instead of anywhere else. That's because, back then, the TV networks leased 5 khz audio channels from AT&T to distribute their audio around their networks, instead of using more-expensive 15 kHz channels. In New York , viewers were treated to high-fidelity sound (if their TV speakers could handle it) from the over-the-air FM signal. I resisted the urge to "juice" the audio in this clip with some "EQ-ing". I'm so glad you asked me about Carol and so glad I could share one of my attic "treasures".
