Even a turner with a couple of years experience like myself can learn things by going back to the basics. Watching someone else go through the process can open our eyes to a bad habit or poor form that we've fallen into and the aha moment comes in and slaps us awake. I know you stay busy but it would be cool if you ever start making the rounds doing demos like the big names, I would love to be in your audience. You are the working mans instructor, no bull, an everyday guy helping neighbors for the joy of doing it. You are inspiring sir. Have a good day and God bless.
Clubs ask all the time but aren't willing to cover travel and lodging expenses. Seems expected for presenters to pay for the privileged. I'd miss rent payments if I did that.
This is THE MOST informative and useful guide on RUclips not only to turn a bowl, but to turn wood in general. I wish I had seen this a year ago when I began turning. I actually learned a few things from this. Thanks for making these videos. They are most definitely helping people learn the craft.
Great tutorial. I'm retired now but used to own a commercial interiors firm with all the latest and greatest machinery and a very talented workforce. I think I've been bitten by every tool I've ever used, so figured I'd approach this as a beginner. Confident after your video to go buy a Jet Mini ,14" Bandsaw and a few tools to set up a basement shop. Wish RUclips was around when I first got started 50 years ago, might have saved some money and a few fingers. Keep up the good work
@@wortheffort Is this walnut oil a regular food oil? Or is it special oil for woodworkers? If so, can I use just normal edible walnut oil? Would edible oil be durable enough i mean for everyday use bowl? Great video, you are a master in woodturning
A lot of videos assume you know more than you might which then translates into getting overwhelmed, this de-mystifies the subject massively... well done and thank you.
I just want to say thank you. Been watching you a couple of weeks. Bought a lathe a week ago and made a honey dipper and a bowl this morning. They didn't come out perfect but I had a blast making them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. God Bless.
Hi, I am Trevor from the UK. Thanks so much for this video, you are a great teacher for novices like me. I am now a retired teacher and is so refreshing to see such a professional video. Thanks again and I learnt a lot.
If you think that this tutorial is impressive you should watch the video on handsaws! A real screwball but massively in depth info through a fun presentation!!😁😁😉 Keep up the good work!!!
I really cannot thank you enough I've learned so much about woodworking watching your vids. The level of detail for the beginner is amazing! I just bought my first lathe and was lost until I watched this. You are truly an awesome teacher. THANK YOU!!! -Derek

I don't own any of this equipment and I've never used a lathe, but this video is one of the best introductory videos I've seen on the subject. You've really done a great job explaining some basic concepts for us newbies. Thanks for the great lesson!

Thank you so much for everything... everything you’ve uploaded i was able to take wood shop in middle school but my high school ditched the shop programs the year before I entered and was increadably disappointed. I truly loved wood shop and was sooo disappointed that I couldn’t continue learning. Over the past 6years I have been putting a very micro shop together. The one thing I have always been super interested in is turning. Recently I purchased a Jet Mini and have been turning for about a year making pens and Turkish spindles and have been dying to expand my knowledge more. Now I’ve never signed into my RUclips account since before google bought it out. Today for this video and all your others I finally had to log on and truly thank you. Because of your videos I’ve finally been able to complete my first small bowl also a carvers mallet. I can’t wait to see what else I learn from you.i never thought I’d get this far. Wish I could apprentice you but I’m a northerner.lol
I have been in timber most of my life, moulding machinist, 8 inch bandsaws but I knew nothing about timberlathes. Now at 83 I have purchased one and I’m watching video’s by the bucketloads. being left handed I stand on the other side of the lathe, terrified of kickbacks and forming my own way of managing. I must say after watching you on how to do it properly I am getting confident and starting to turn out some nice work. Thank you my unnamed hero your doing an excellent job of teaching us dummies. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
You don't have to stand on other side if you don't want to. The wood or lathe doesn't care. Most experienced turners learn to be a bit ambidextrous because we don't need fine motor skills, just an understanding of leverage.
You are probably the best teacher not just wood working but in most of the instructional videos that I have watched. Keep up the great work. Brand new to lathing and absolutely enjoying it.
I have watched many wood turning tutorials since I got in to the hobby and this is by far the best one I seen. Very detailed and easy to understand. Thanks!
Thank you I am indebted to you for the clarity and generous instruction. I well appreciate the many camera angles you made to precisely illustrate the points you were putting across.
Wow, so much content. I can see myself watching this again and again. Thanks for sharing and thanks for putting all of your time and effort into this video!
I've learned such a lot from this video. As a fairly new woodturner with only carbide tools, this has really started to demystify my intended progression to traditional tools. You have a great way of clearly explaining and demonstrating the correct and incorrect methods whilst also zooming in where necessary to show exactly what you are doing. I have bookmarked this and will be watching it again so it properly sinks in, thank you.

Just watched this again (almost 3 years). I don't do turning everyday, I dabble in other crafts. I struggled the other week, turning a piece so this was a good refresher for me. As a novice turner I know that if I get it close, I can sand the rest out. Obviously if I can turn the wood to a nice finish then save a load of time and effort from sanding or even items that have exploded from an incorrect cut approach. It's a shame I can't like it twice.

Thanks
This is fantastic, I’m buying the tool’s tomorrow. I’m having flashbacks of high school wood shop and I had no idea lathes were this affordable. You are a wonderful teacher
35 minutes in and still no turning but not boring at all. So much good info in this video so far. Just bought my lathe going to do a pen then a ring then a bowl.
Having not turned anything for over 20 years, I found this very good to remember what I had forgotten and its great for beginners.
Thanks
Knowledgable, and thorough, AWESOME!
Thanks for taking the time you did on this video. Very clear instruction and you explained some concepts I haven't seen anywhere else after watching at least 10 hours of beginners turning videos. Subscribed
Kudos for your in depth video of turning the first bowl. Any first time turners will be well equipped after viewing this video to get from start to finish following your instructions. I have been turning for three years and constantly scan You Tube for new ideas and skills. Your video is clear, concise, and well presented. Good job.
Thanks
I truly recommend that the next video that you make is on tuition on how to make a video!
