My go-to for formal occasions is the basic men's tail, but I braid it and use hair spray for any flyaways I have.

I'd just do a standard top knot, or whatever knot and tie it back nice and tight so it looks neat. I don't like low knots/balls.

Not the easiest thing to do with roughly 2-3 feet of hair on my head but I keep trying.
I keep asking my sis how she does her buns and I swear to this day it still looks like sorcery to me... I mean, I know how to braid but the whole over and under for a basic bun confuses the heck of me for some reason :/

Metal Jesus Yea those little suckers are a pain in the ass sometimes. Start by trying a light gel. That should hold them down.
+Metal Jesus aloe vera gel might work and not be greasy!
You could use hair wax
As for me, when wearing a poneytail I just use a few light spritz of hairspray,let it dry, then go back and spritz it once on each side, wet my hands barely and smooth the little strands down. Be weary of waxes. Also hair products can stop your hair from growing when they clog the pours at that roots. Use in moderation.

Hey Amanpreet Singh try some sea salt spray. It gives your hair a nice messy texture just like if you got out of the ocean. Or if your close to the beach just dip your head in and don't wash it for a few days. You'll notice the difference.

On your hairtype, this looks pretty cool. Mine is thick and curly, so I like to leave mine tight/but bushy...but with all my edges slick, very boho chic like Joakim Noah. Formal or non formal, people can take it or leave it. If you got longhair and a guy, you already a renegade.

i hav long hair now, tho i started growing it in january 2014 then i stupidly cut it twice in june of last year, then i didnt cut it and it was longer but then in order to get a job quicker i had to cut it on april 1st, not very short like the majority of guys, then 4 months after its longer, if i didnt cut it on april it would be way longer then now, tho its weird that guys look like girls when they hav very long hair i dont understand why

I wont wear one. My hair is half way down my back I grew my hair out to grow it out not be a hipster with a tiny knot on my head.
Well personally my hair is incredibly curly so having it down is quite messy and really frizzy, and because of said curls it masques how long it truly is so for ease i "bun" it or do a ponytail as in effect it still shows you have long enough hair to be able to throw it back with ease
