  • Many singers HATE the sound of their own voice.
But why is that? What is it about hearing our own voices that makes us have such a strong reaction.
Learning to love your singing voice is a journey that starts by following the right singing techniques. But there is so much mental work to be done as well.
Today, I'll talk about what really makes the difference in learning to love your voice.

I started off singing so bad and I hated the way I sang, my family members told me I was terrible and it broke my confidence but I continued to work at it and I believe I have gotten better and the people who told me I couldn't sing tell me I sing lovely now yet I still struggle with liking my own voice.

I came back to singing after 30 years, and when I first started again I sounded terrible. I began to improve after practice and the more I did the better I sounded and then the more I liked my mature resonance. Sometimes being afraid to sound bad is something we can all carry around with us if we allow it, and everything you have said is so very true …

Oh, this resonated so hard for me! I've always hated singing up in the high notes, because even in my twenties I was convinced I sounded like a little old lady, trilling away in some suburban church choir or something. So when I finally enrolled on a Performing Arts course in my mid-thirties, and I started having regular singing classes, I was baffled when I kept being given high solos to sing in our assignment performances. I remember asking "Why would you want me singing up high when I sound like my nan?"
I was so intimidated by this I signed up for extra singing lessons, hoping I could 'fix' my nasty-high-voice problem. I remember in one lesson I was given an option to sing K.D.Lang's 'Constant Craving,' amd by the end of it I was completely dispirited. The teacher asked me why, and my reply to him was "I love this song, and when I sing it I want K.D. Lang to come out... but all that comes out is me." He laughed and said "Well, that's because you're not K.D. Lang, isn't it? You're you. And you need to let go of wanting to be other singers when you sing, and learn to like you being the singer."
I remember those words, but I'm not sure I've learned to do that - even now. HOW do you even do that? It's especially hard when you have enough evidence to know you can sing in tune, do vibrato and all the technical stuff... but you just wish you didn't sound like you do.

I am finally able to believe that I can sing and someday I will do it well! Thank you for all your coaching I have been doing your warm ups for months. I DESPISE how I sound. But the folks that I do perform for on the rare occasion that I perform in public always love it and tell me how great I sound. They've seen my uncle play in public and will ask him where I am playing next or when I am going to come out and play with him again. I am slowly learning that what I think about how I sound doesn't matter if others enjoy it. It's one of the areas in my life that is helping teach me how to accept compliments with grace and maturity.

“My voice is annoying, I don’t sound masculine enough”
It’s held me back forever. So hard to break away from that thinking, especially with a lot of internalized homophobia (openly and happily living my life as a gay man now).
Moments in my past when I would find the courage to sing, I would get told to be quiet by those around me which only made it worse.
Those people are wrong, and my interpretation of my own thoughts are wrong. The positive things people say about my voice far outweighs the negatives…so no more keeping quiet.
    Really appreciate this video 🥰

Allow me to present Exhibit A... Mitch Grassi of Pentatonix! Seriously, if you've never heard him, go listen to some of his stuff immediately; he's a counter-tenor with a voice that's been described as 'once in a generation' incredible - and he spent his entire childhood being teased for his 'girly' high voice. I guarantee you, those same people are NOT laughing at him now! Pretty much anything from Pentatonix will showcase his talent, but some highlights are: 'Hallelujah,' 'The Prayer,' 'Mary Did You Know...' oh, and his solo cover of Billie Eilish's 'Your Power' is sublime.

Good tips man. I'm cutting some stuff now and have been singing for about 35 years. I'm by no means a technically super awesome vocalist. For me (everyone is different of course), once I feel like the technical part is good (mic placement, level, mood, good warm up) I just try to go into my visual image of the "location" of the song. The vibe, the sights, the smells, any associated emotions and just go off of instinct, The other thing that helps is to listen to stuff back outl loud but very softly and you can discern pitch stuff that needs work. Usually I like to cut dry for a while until I know I'm hitting it and then maybe monitor with some reverb or delay or whatever for mood, but it's important to try and really make it sound good naked without pitch correction if you can. Then you can apply just the needed amount to certain phrases or retake a few little sections or comp or whatever. Anyway- via condios amigos. I have an album on you tube if you wanna check it out, ruclips.net/video/oR5QrnKz5GI/видео.html

My big issue is that my natural voice doesn't necessarily agree with my personality... I like to think I'm laid back, playful, quirky and introverted, yet I have one of those booming & powerful, piercing / larger than life voices. Sometimes I'm in disbelief when I hear men saying they wish their voice was bigger or stronger / masculine because I always wanted a softer voice.

For me, with the "close your eyes" part. I hate my voice cause I swear I sound like the most nerdy guy ever. I think that stems from me being alone and having no friends for over a decade. So building that confidence to sing is really hard. So when I hear my voice, I'm reminded of a unconfident nerd. Meanwhile at the same time one of my favorite singers, Adam Young (Owl City) has that same kind of nerdy chill voice. So he alone is proof to my I need to learn to love that voice I have and use it cause there are people out there that might love it even if I don't.

Ever since i was 10 i wanna sing, listening to the songs that seems easy to follow, i was still not sure sbout my voice back then, so when they asked me to sing ill politely refuse, but then suddenly i got confident, i thought i could sing, i thought i could at least do it, they stopped me saying "if you don't want to sing so dont, its ok" but... I wanna sing is my voice really that bad? After that i barely speak, i keep my voice low so that they won't hear it full, I've been hating my voice, to the point where i just wanna apologize to people whenever i speak, but 7 years later, the fear of my voice gone light, i have a very small confident back it grew over time, I've been secretly practicing after that, so 3 years later i figured that i wanna sing again, my voice has been improved! or so i thought, i feel happy singing, with all my heart i sang the song i loved to sing, after i sang i felt them disappointed, no one wanna talk about my singing, they gone quiet as if no one wants to comfort me, soo 3 mins later someone else sang and the party continues, i felt i ruined the party so i left, soo 4 years untill today I've locked my self from singing, i dont want to sing, i dont want you to hear my voice, all these years I've been trying to improve but, what's the point if my voice is trash? Even tho i have no confidence left, i still wanna know if there's any hope, even just a spec of hope. That could keep me going. I wanna know. Cause I've hated myself for not being able to sing.

I’m no professional but I’ve been taking lessons for 3 years so this is what I learned:
Shape of mouth is important, relax body except stomach, for breathing breath from your diaphragm and then tighten to help you reach higher notes. For going low the only advice I can think of is to not push it out and don’t stretch your voice too far. Make sure when shaping ur mouth you shape around the vowel not the consonant. That’s all I can think of. I hope this helps!!

I'm not a singer, but I do hate my own voice so much that that's probably the only reason that I can't even really just sing for fun. I sang for the first time only like a year ago. Like as a kid I wouldn't even sing happy birthday, I actually mean FIRST time. I'd definitely have never wanted to do it professionally or anything but I am admittedly kind of bummed out that my normal range is literally exactly one octave. My highest note is middle C and it's a huge strain to get there.
I mean there's also falsetto, no idea how high that is, but I think I use it to talk to my cat sometimes lol, my "baby voice" for my cat is the same feeling as when I try to do falsetto... I think the "quality" of my falsetto is AWFUL but eh I guess it exists- there's an utterly massive gap between the lowest I can do in falsetto and the highest I can do normally, I know that much
Funny enough, my speaking voice actually sounds really high though. I've realized recently that even within that one octave, my normal speaking voice is fairly constrained to the higher end of it. It's actually physically more comfortable for me to speak with a much deeper voice, but mentally it's way less comfortable. Maybe that's because I'm a tiny gay 4'11 guy so my true natural voice just doesn't fit how I look, idk.
Anyway I wish I could learn to be more confident about speaking in general, but preferably so I could actually practice singing for fun... Well if I had a way to do that anyway. I'm also curious, anyone else have a similar experience with the speaking voice thing? Like, realizing your own seemingly natural speaking voice is actually a slight strain to one end of your range?

I've got it bad with this. I like to go to karaoke to kind of test run my singing every so often (I also take lessons), and for every "Oh man, I think that sounded really good", I have ten "Oh god, I sound horrible" moments. So I invariably go home at the end of the night and think "Jesus, I'm delusional thinking I could sing, my voice is awful".
Case in point, just tonight I performed a couple of Ghost songs at karaoke. Technically speaking, I was hitting the notes and staying in key. Problem is, when I catch snippets of my own voice over the backing track while singing, I falter. I think "I sound terrible, let me try to fix it", and before I can stop myself with better judgment, I try to fix it. So I wobble and trail off, or my voice cracks, or I overcompensate on the next note and go WAY too sharp... it's a situation, is what I'm saying. Then I'm embarrassed and the rest of the song is a trainwreck.
It wasn't bad on the first song, I was getting good crowd reactions and that helped me just ride through and overlook my mistakes, but the second song? Spoilers, I pretty much put the mic down and went home silently the moment the fadeout ended, lol. And all because I hear my own voice and think "Just listen to what's coming out of my yaphole right now, I'm not singing, I'm making mouth noises and putting shame on the very concept of music, and I've spent thousands in learning how to do so".
Funny thing is, I couldn't begin to tell you what's bad about my voice. I can nitpick tiny things all day, but it's not like I'm Gilbert Gottfried over here, I have a fairly pleasant bass voice with decent range, weak perhaps, but that can be improved... but listening to myself talk or sing makes me want to go back in time and slap myself for not going back in time and slapping myself for wanting to pursue singing.
