Pterodactyl defence seems to be a nice way of avoiding sämisch variation as a King's Indian Defence player or Hippo player.

Hey Solomon! Love the vid as always. A week ago I asked you about covering e4 pterodactyls. The line I'm most interested in goes 1e4 g6 2nf3 bg7 3d4 c5. It's called hyperaccelerated pterodactyl and after dxc5 qa5 it has a lot of goofy names based on a variation. There is also 1e4 g6 2nc3 bg7 3d4 c5 to be aware of. I don't know if you covered c5 against e4 d4 f4 if so, then I'll look for it. Do they play similarly to sicilian defense or do they follow a different gameplan? I'm not a big fan of the sicilian tbh

the best scenario for the sicilian Pterodactyl is white doesnt play the best line and you transpose to a Dragon Sicilian... if not, with 1. e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3. Nf3!? c5!? 4. dxc5! Qa5+ 5. c3 Qxc5 6. Na3! gives a clear edge for White. (against 1. e4, because you dont like playing sicilian I highly recommend the Pirc, cause even the main line modern with d5 and a6 has Sicilianesq type of positions)

@@lorenzozorrer Thanks. That's good to know. I still think there is some more poison to it, but the moves you are really natural and would potentially cause me problems.
I always struggle in the execution of kingsite attack with pirc. I play the exact same ideas as in kid or closed/czech benoni, but pirc just doesn't seem to click for me. I've been recently finding a lot of success playing ideas from williams variation of the nimzowitch defense with both colors against every opening move. The game is more balanced and stable than all of aggressive openings I know and leaves more attacking opportunities than every positional opening I know. I can also play the black lion ideas from time to time so that's cool. And I'm yet to see someone knowing how to properly attack it since my pawns are all symmetrical and my aim is to be able to castle both ways or not at all.

      @@Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol I used to play the Williams 'till I faced this line way too often: 1. e4 Nc6 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 Nf6 4. Nc3 Bg4 5. Be3 e6 6. h3 Bxf3 7. Qxf3 d5 8. e5 Nd7 9. O-O-O +/-

@@Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol have you tried the czech-pirc, or philidor positions through 1...d6 move order? I find the Philidor easy to play for plans and ideas and, it doesn't have crazy kingside attacks for white, the endgame is favorable for Black and you can be way flexible regarding your strategic approach (do you want to go for a exchange, or old indian/hanham variation or do you want to be aggressive and play the Black Lion), I myself do play the Pterodactyl and Tiger's Modern as my main repertoire and the good thing is that if I don't like an certain outcome of the Pterodactyl, I can choose a tiger's modern, and if i don't like a certain tiger's modern I can always transpose to a pirc, to a hippo or to a double fianchetto.

@@lorenzozorrer I've played both philidor, which is just a passive position to me with no actual chances for checkmate (tho I've seen some players actually crush with philidor, I'm just not that kind of a player) and czech pirc which tends to give me good results but is just not exiting enough for me. I've played black lion for years, first loosing like 500 elo, getting good, and regaining it back, but there are just some lines like lion's yawn, which is 30 or so moves of known endgame theory (from my perspective at least) or counters that say "fk you and your system, do something else" and they always happen to me from e4 positions.
The line You mentioned doesn't scare me at all, if anything, I believe it's a great opportunity to show off your queenside attacking skills, tho I like the move 6...bh5 more. Computer says it's marginally worse, but in essence your opponent now has a choice to make. Either let your bishop live there until you decide to move/trade it or commit to kingside expansion to chase it off and castle queenside Idk what it is about these positions, but I always win if they do that. The position is very delicate tho. Both players can easily throw away the entire game making a normal looking move. I guess that's what I like about it the most and why I'd never want to play a completely solid opening like philidor.
