- Welcome back to Don Critic, it’s the second episode of my Devil May Cry series review. Today we’re continuing the journey through Capcom’s Devil May Cry, tackling the second entry. A game with a troubled development, delays, and a mixed reception from not only critics and fans, but also the team behind it. Under a new director, we’ll see what caused this entry to become the black sheep of the franchise.

Its a shame we didnt even see Lucia in DMC5
She really deserved a comeback!
@@DonCritic absolutely she does
Devil may cry 2 maybe be a disappointing sequel but seeing Dante say king here’s your crown is such a awesome line In my opinion.
Haha it is! It feels very classic Dante!
@@DonCritic lol indeed :)
You know I have to say that I actually kind of like the coin toss thing for Dante. With the reveal that it was double-headed all along, it meant that Dante was always going to do the right thing and was just teasing everyone with it. Which is the closest Dante ever feels to his classic, jokester self aside from the "Here's your crown," line.
Also, Arius is tied with Singularity from Bayonetta 3 as the worst villain I have ever encountered in a game.
i felt physical pain by watching gameplay footage of dmc 2
😂
Man I remember when this game came out and I legit was SOOOOOO bored with it and the story. Dante went from cool to super try hard serious. I’m glad that DMC3 came out because that’s the best Dante we ever got
I agree they tried hard too make him serious here, they took the best approach with DMC3
The reason or at least part of his personality change comes from the devil may cry anime which takes place in between 1 and 2
I get they tried to rectify it in the anime but it’s not so much a reason for DMC 2’s poor character change, as the anime didn’t release until four years after DMC2. As I say in the video, the games troubled development, direction and being passed to a different team to the first game is what caused Dante’s personality differences. Whatever came afterwards to “bridge” DMC1 & 2 was new material and not planned during the second games development
You are one of my favorite RUclipsr, your explained videos are always fun to watch ! I subscribed during your Mortal Kombat series and activated the notification bell since then ! Keep up the good work man !
Wow! Thanks so much my friend! Hope you have a great day man!
12:12 I only unlocked Trish, but I never picked it up again. I sold my HD trilogy a while ago after facing some hard times. I do miss 3 a lot. Christmas is coming!!!!! 😁
Might be time to revisit a classic then 😁
@DonCritic I'm modding Skyrim to be a little more like Star Wars. I'm going to ask for a PSN gift card. There are too many things I want. I have to get Seperate Ways, the Director's upgrade for Ghost, some creation club credits for cloaks, and RE6. DMC HD trilogy and 5 are now on the list. Waiting for that sweet holiday sale to swoop in.
Thanks for the review! I technically never finished the game (I did make it to the final boss) but I do agree with you, especially regarding the infested copter boss and Arias himself.
Yeah some very lame fights, luckily the third game has some great ones
The only problem I had was the auto lock on. Other that it's not to bad imo.
It truly is a miracle that the DMC series continued on after this game. Most other franchises would have dropped dead after a game of this caliber. Luckily DMC 3: Dante's Awakening would come out and reclaim the franchises dignity.
Seriously anyone who tries to convince you that the reboot is somehow worse than 2 is straight up full of sh*t. There's fun to be had with the reboot. There is no such thing as fun with 2. Just painful, soul-sucking boredom.
You have my deepest condolences for slogging through this thing.
Haha thanks Dave! I totally agree, the reboot may have gone in a different direction, but it is far more polished than this one
I heard in another video that Dante’s personality may have changed due to him seeing what happened with his brother in the first game
Doesn’t really add up, cause he’s still himself at the very end of DMC1 when Trish joins his shop. The most likely explanation is someone in the new team working on DMC2 just didn’t like his personality and wanted to change him
I didn’t think Devil May Cry was all that bad while I was playing it. A bit easy, I only realized how bad it was when the credits rolled after 5 hours(which felt like less) and I never died once. No real sense of accomplishment. I do think this was Dante’s best design personally though.
Meanwhile Devil May Cry 1 almost broke me and took way longer because of game overs.
Yeah his design is really good, one of the few strong points of this sequel. Devil May Cry 1 is a solid game, but oh so satisfying to conquer it! 🙂
Given the release gaps between DMC1 and 2 from late 2001 to early 2003, you can tell how rushed the development for DMC2 was on the inside and outside.
A perfect video, as a kid I was always wondering why I never heard, seen or even know that existed DMC2, as I only heard DMC and DMC3
Pd: Hello from Colombia Latin america, eres increíble!
Hello! 🙂
I used to think this was better than DMC 1 when I first played it. A fool at a young age! 😅
Likely due to the easier difficulty and more accessible gameplay. We all loved the simpler games when we were younger regardless of quality
Kong Skull Island made DmC2 feel like a masterpiece
Haha 😂 that it certainly did
Great video. i found DMC 2 to be so boring. Dante's personality was gone.
Thanks for watching!
How do you not have more subscribers
Thanks Michael!
Its a shame the game ended the way it did, it has some great stuff that added to the series but most of the game is faults, there is still some fun to the game by giving your self some challenge runs and helped me practice some combos....But yaaaaa things were just not pretty, but at least we got some stuff out of it in the sequels.
Anyhow it was intresting to watch you give a game a negative review lol, dmc2 really do be like that haha.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video Ninja! Thanks for watching
I was new and late to the series. Maybe I’m just not that good at the first game. I enjoyed this one but it is not my favorite.
Which one is your favourite?
