    Thank You for putting up these videos. I purchased a HF 72" toolbox, (2) end cabinets and installed a 3/16" steel top. Your "quiet" tone and attention to the details made this decision easy.

    I like the way you had all. The extensions stored on the rails to keep them in place , good idea I'm also a fan of the old USA Craftsman Tools as i have my complete set i got as a Christmas present in 1976 with the original toolbox and all the accessories together we had done many projects over the years although i have switched my preference to my Fathers SK ratchets he bought in the 50s as. They are more comfortable in my hands and have good memories of my Dad also complete sets in the original boxes

    I won't touch the Stanley craftsman China crap now a days but the old us craftsman tools found at every swap meet has always been the go to for me. Old craftsman tools are great.

      +MadMetalManiac74 Yup, I’ve had this set about 20 years now and the sockets and wrenches have served me well. Really the only pieces I’ve upgraded from the original set were the ratchets and not because they broke, just wanted some newer higher tooth count ratchets.

    I just bought some Pittsburgh flex head ratchets, I opened them up out of curiosity at work. BONE DRY, not a spec of grease in em... but let me tell you, after adding the grease myself, these things are silky smooth. Great buy

    Great video and great point about having things organized. I don't have a garage and my tools are scattered between 2 sheds and a couple spots in the house. Every time I tinker on my truck or another project I spend more time getting tools together and preparing for the job than actually doing it.

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  5 лет назад

      Greg Blau I’ve been there. For years when I rented, I had no real place to keep tools. They were spread around in small toolboxes and bins. Some in my trailer, others in my truck and in my apartment. I’ve been able to learn and get done so much more since I was able to get a place of my own and way to keep everything organized.

      Greg Blau same here. We bought an old house which needed allot of attention so it’s basically been one thing after another for the past 5 years. Eventually my goal is to build a nice sized shop out back, but for now my 20x20 garage is a huge step up from working outside.

      Brian Ray I don’t think you’ll have any issues with the drawers in regards to weight. That being said, I wouldn’t pull a drawer out and sit on it like I’ve seen guys do with their Snapon boxes. One thing I did do was grease the drawer slides which makes them glide in and out nice and smooth. I think you’ll be really happy with your investment!

    1. That guys likes his Snap on Box so well he's willing to trade for a US General! :)
    2. The lil blue free flashlight, ha! I have several of those :)
    3. Organizing the big screw driver drawer, considered placing the big Sunex set going left to right, in the lower right corner, then the little Sunex set above it? Then the nut drivers on the lower left corner, running left to right? That would keep them from rolling when you open/close drawer. Maybe just turn everything 90 degrees to the right and rearrange. Just an idea.
    4. I've needed a box for 25 years. I spend more time looking for tools, sockets, etc, than I do using it once I find it.
    5. If you pay full price at Harbor Freight, you're doing it wrong :)

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  5 лет назад +1

      applejacks971 thanks for the advice! The box is a constant work in progress. I’ve added to the screw driver drawer since posting, and will likely do some more rearranging. My plier drawer is the next drawer to work on. I ordered a set of plier racks that should be coming on this week. That should free up a bunch of space. I’ll probably make a video about that.

    I've watched your vid a couple of times. What's your opinion of getting the 72", but instead of the 14.5 hanging ends, instead get a 26"? I'd like another to go along with the 72 when I get it, but not sure which way to go. I've never had a box before, so I don't know the pro's and con's of the hangers vs an additional box. Space in my garage is not limited, so no issues there.

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  5 лет назад +1

      applejacks971 I chose the hangers because if one day I wanted to get another 72” box or one of the shorter ones, I could use the hanger to connect the two together and make a long continuous counter space. That being said, I do also like the idea of a 72” box as well as one of Harbor Freight’s tool carts. The nice thing about that is that if you’re working in the driveway or the other side of a large shop you can wheel the small cart over with the tools and parts you need.

    I don’t care what people say about HF tools. There’s no job in the world that HF tools can fix or do. People are just paying for name brand tools. I have all brand mix from SnapOn, Gearwrench, Mac, and mostly Craftsman. Some HF too. There no ratchet or socket from all these brand that are superior than the other. You name me a Nuts or Bolts that a SnapOn takes off and I can do it with a Craftsman or HF too. Yes some brand dose look a little nice but that the the point. It’s about doing the job. Seriously, professional mechanic are not very smart people. I know people personally that are mechanic from 5 yrs to 25yrs. Some spend over $50k for tools, and they only make $45k-$60k a year. That’s not very smart. I’m a machinist and fabricator and I make over $75k a year. All my tools at work cost me under $6k. If you have your own shop and makes over $300k-$400k a year, than I can justify you spending $100K for tools. But if you for a shop making $18- $25 a hour, you have no business spending $50k-$70k on tools. Mechanic pay employees was rank some the lowest pay profession with a degree. So now we why they spend a lot of moneys on tools, their not that smart.

    Hello @chevelle74us, I have a few questions. I have the exact same set up, 72” chest with two 7 draw side cabinets. When I went underneath the side cabinets to secure the two attachment bolts that came with it I learned that the 72” chest didn’t have the receiver holes for the bolts. I called HF and after about 20 minutes they told me that those side cabinets were not designed for the 72” chest. Those us draw side cabinets were designed for the smaller chest. So since I have finished my rant my question is, how did you secure the side cabinets to the main 72” chest?

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  Год назад +1

      To be honest, I meant to drill holes but after 5+ years I never got around to it. I will do it and recommend that you do so because it makes it much easier to move the box around with the sides securely attached.

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  5 лет назад +1

      Jo So You would expect a certain amount of flex with any tool box drawer. The drawer sliders on either side of the drawers operate independently, so if you push the drawer closed (especially a long drawer) from one end, you’ll feel some flex. I also think it’s more noticeable when the box is empty. I don’t really notice in my box since it’s loaded with tools. The professional boxes made by Snapon, Mac and Matco will have a better feel but those boxes are considerably more expensive. I have yet to find someone that has purchased this box and didn’t love it. In fact my brother in law sold his Snapon box after he left the trade and purchased a harbor freight box for his home and he’s very happy with it.

    • @zippy1981dotnet
      @zippy1981dotnet 5 лет назад

      Jo So, metal drawers "bow" under load and at that wide the bowing is pronounced. I only owe a 1st gen (18" deep) US General 42", so I can't stay from experience on the 72". However, as long as the drawers slide in and out good and lock, I wouldn't worry about wobble *too* much.

      +SBdunks3 The Harbor Freight boxes are powder coated. I’m not sure how this type of finish could be repaired so that it would not be noticeable. I would try and find some touch up paint that is s close match to at least cover the scratches so they don’t rust.

    A really great video and a nice setup you have.
    I've been weighing my options for a new box... Has anyone considered getting 2 of the HF 44x22 boxes ($479 x2 --> $958) instead of a single 72x22"... ($1099) e.g you have 88x22 worth of space for less money than the larger box... you also have more color options. Similar with the side boxes... They're not much cheaper than the 44". Any reason to prefer the larger box??? I have a small garage, so the smaller box would be easier to move around.

    • @darrell67ohio
      @darrell67ohio 5 лет назад

      I'm considering replacing several old style Craftsman 26" boxes myself. I have my eye on the 72" however I'm curious like "John King". I'm thinking maybe go with the 56" top and or 2 sides etc. The 44" box alone is a Nice box $4$. I think the 72" bottom with the 56" top in BLACK would be sharp.
      With all that being said ...I drag my feet tinging soon as i pull the trigger and buy a box HF will come out with the 72" in Black like they do the 56" ???

    • @johnking1079
      @johnking1079 5 лет назад

      I'm sure you'll end up with a nice box no matter which way you go... Just curious... I was thinking the smaller top would be for a work surface... 72-56 --> 16" seems small for that??? Any purpose you see for the space? Black would be nice... I've been looking at the red craftsman for so long that a color change would be nice. I have the blue 5 drawer cart and love it...
      Another thing to consider... The 72" box weighs almost 700 lbs, 476lbs for the 56".... 44" is 339 lbs.
      I have a gravel driveway and I don't have a forklift, crane, back hoe or anything at my house capable of lifting a 72" box. (And I'm envious of you folks who do...) With the 44, I could just get a couple friends & easily put it up and shove in the back of my pickup... So I'll probably go with 2 of the 44" boxes.

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  5 лет назад

      I think your right going to a BB drawer box no matter what size or brand name is wonderful over a 30-35year old "slide" drawer box. The blue 5drawer cart is $ well spent for sure. I'm old school and use a service cart which I'm not sure I'll ever delete it because I'm old and use to working with it LoL. Things change because of technology. Think about how far Battery Powered tools have came. They have now pushed allot of "Air Tools" back deeper into tool boxes. With that being said room for charging stations are more popular and the 16" space you talked about might come in handy for such a space. Or the top of the 56" box might be a "charging station".
      I like the ideal of some smaller drawers to help keep things organized. But after working out of several 26" boxes side by side. A long drawer sounds nice. I wish the HF 72" came in colors ie: BLACK but I also wish they had a shorter long drawer under the deep long drawer. Which i think would be nice for wrenches.
