I live in central texas it stays in the 100,s all summer, the chickens will be fine in the heat. Put a small kiddy pool with some pavers in it and put some water to an inch above the pavers. Chickens adjust their temps through their feet. When they get to hot they will stand in the water to cool them selves

Janey, I was laughing so hard at your garden math. Yes, girl, yes! I had been thinking about adding boxwoods to a garden area I haven’t really developed yet and I had an hour between my physical therapy and my doctors appointment and there’s a Lowe’s across the street. The had 5 boxwoods on the clearance rack and they were in great shape. That was a sign, I had to get them. They were basically free. 😊

We had a week of 45°C (113°F) heat when my second child was a newborn. No AC. We moved to the guest bedroom downstairs, which worked for 2 days before the heat seeped in. It sucked. We got AC later that year (rental), and it was an absolute God-send!
Keep the water up to your plants - they’ll be ok.

Lowe's clearance is a good option for you and so glad you are able to take advantage of it. For newbies please consider your growing climate. Us folks that live in a more northern climate with short growing seasons, need to choose wisely. A healthy and vigorous plant is worth its weight in gold. Our season dictates what our garden beds look like. I don't care to nurse a plant for 2 months and hope it recovers before frost comes and makes me wait to see if the money saved was money lost. Just another train of thought.

Forgive me, I have had a busy summer and am finally sitting down and catching up on your videos! I live in Alabama and we have really compacted clay soil. I know some people have opinions about using gypsum, but it has worked wonders with creating garden beds for me. I put gypsum down on the compacted soil, cover it in sand, then put down compost. I watered it down every couple of days and it didn’t take but a few weeks and it was so nice to plant in and the plants loved it. If I forget the gypsum step when starting a new bed, I always regret it. I’m not sure if you guys can use it out there, but it would be worth a shot in that compacted soil areas. Thank you for your videos! I’m so excited to see how the year finishes out in your garden!

I love your garden math! 🤣
Last week I got a Monrovia macrophylla hydrangea for half price off the Lowes clearance rack. It had obviously been left in full sun because all the beautiful blooms were burned and many of the leaves too. I just trimmed the blooms and burnt leaves off and it's looking happy in the appropriate morning sun only location. That's what, credit towards three new plants. 😆 I don't think many people in my area know that a really pitiful looking perennial will come back next year, so I still usually find a good selection. I like the idea of planting bargain plants in a holding area.
I am in Southern inland Monterey County, CA and it topped out at 120 yesterday. So the power company is turning off the power tomorrow morning, the 5th, for 36 hours, which means power to our well will go out so in case of fire, there will be no water to put it out, but they say it's for "safety". We have solar, but since it's tied into the grid, it goes out when the grid goes out. This is maddening. 🥵

Your heat 🥵I don’t think I could survive it! Question/suggestion on the watering/drainage with the vego beds… if you set the drip to run for a shorter amount of time, but more often, would that reduce the amount of run off you’re getting? I doubt anything that’s planted in them have deep roots so maybe not saturating the soil so deeply would help. I’ve eliminated almost all pots on my porch because of the runoff and staining. Happy Independence Day🇺🇸

Janey, have you picked out the awning for your office? As I saw the back side of your office it reminded me of the front door awning. I think it would look great to use the same material on both ends. So, I'm sure you watched Fixer Upper in the past, do you remember the beautiful, scalloped awnings in galvanized metal that Joanna and Chip put on homes? Galvanized or black metal would look so adorable on your office. If scalloped is not your thing, the modern farmhouse ones with the vertical lines are very nice too.

That monty is so sweet. It's great to be flexible. You have to be in the garden. Everything is trial-and-error from year to year. Everything is looking great.
Our heat is reaching havic on my garden as well. I have found the vinka are great for heat At least here in oklahoma. I have used them now for several years and have tripled what I have this year.
And they are cheap. I have one wave and 1 super Tunia. Vista bubble gum still alive replacing what I lost with vinka today. I have one pot of vinkas. I have over wintered 2 years in a row now. This will be the third year for them to grow. In my garden, they are huge and looking fantastic. Do what you can rest and relax when possible.
Make the best of your days. Monte needs a day off😴 . Have a great day the oklahoma gardener😊

    Love your garden math 😂
Question. Do you enjoy your vigo bed at the height they are or do you prefer the shorter ones? I bought a 17” Vego bed for flowers, I like it but I’m thinking for veggies I might not want to bend over 🤔 would love your thoughts, thanks so much, really enjoy your Chanel, podcasts and merch!

Hi Janey! Up in Vancouver BC, we're heading into 10 days of heat, too. But it's our first stretch of warm weather of the year. Good plan to get those plants tucked in to weather your extreme heat! I missed your deadline to submit a garden video. Maybe next year! 7b.

If you move your strawberry plant to the center of your bed it'll send out runners in all directions and you will multiply like crazy

6 am gardening club. Yes, just keeping everyone watered and surviving until we get back down to 100° 😅

Yes, Lowe's clearance rack. Where I get all of my plants! Love it! Have to go early at mine. And since they are half price, you can get 2 since one is free. 😂 Hot here in Texas, too. Can only garden very early or really late after 7p. 😅

That’s the kind of math I love. I would try lettuces and cilantro in that shaded vego bed. also some herbs like chamomile would take some shade or angelica
