The Dark Knight Returns - An Epic Fan film
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- Adapted from Issue #1 of Frank Miller's seminal 1986 comic series, filmmaker Wyatt Weed (“Shadowland,” “Four Color Eulogy”) offers his unofficial fan’s take on the Batman mythos. Following the death of Robin at the hands of the Joker, Bruce Wayne (Weed) hung up the cowl and cape 10 years ago. But now Gotham City is in the grip of a violent crime wave, and the venerable 55-year-old billionaire has to decide if the time is right for the Caped Crusader’s return.
The Dark Knight Returns filmed for 24 days over a 17-month period from June of 2015 through October of 2016. Shot on a shoestring budget of $2500, it features locations in and around the St. Louis metro area.
This production is non-profit and is for entertainment purposes only. The production is in no way associated with DC Comics or Time Warner.

Hey everyone - thanks for being so patient!! I had about 60 backlogged comments to approve, and I thank you far all of them, good and bad!! I have been busy doing a variety of production jobs, including a chance to play Roman Sionis in another DC fan film, but that unfortunately fell through. But I am currently writing the next films in the DK series and hope to have that done in the next week or two, and have already begun building props and models for the upcoming films. Thanks for all the views and all the support!!
Great job on this one 😃
Great job! Excellent work.
I have never played Cable. It has been suggested that I could, but I never have.
The batman here is like a mix of Adam west and Michael Keaton
Yeah
"We are criminals, Clark. Always have been".
- Bruce Wayne
I think this is well cool and makes a version form the animation movie into a realistic experience. But I feel the costume could of been better
It's from the comic not the animated movie
It's a 90s version of batman the costumes not going to look so modern day
I know what you mean. I overall give the film a 7 out of 10.
And that's "could've," the contraction of "could have," not "could of." "Could-of" does not exist.
The mask is very awsome
That had so much effort put into and damn fine job with a budget. It succeeded where Hollywood fails... Authenticity!!!
This is honestly one of my favorite Batman fan films I've seen. I don't have any problems with it. The casting is perfect and the acting and choice of actor for Bruce was perfect. The PTSD and psychological effects of being Batman that are effecting Bruce is a fresh take on the character as well. The fighting choreography could improve, but that's not a huge deal.
Even if there isn't a big budget, you can feel the love put into this film. #respect 🙌🏼 💯 🎩
$2,500
Keep that budget in mind while watching. And keep in mind that there were campy elements in the source material.
Frank Miller's batman is lauded for being dark... and it definitely is... but the mutants legitimately wore shirts like that. It was a strange combination of brutality and ridiculousness.
Again... $2500.
Production wise, the film is pretty darn good.
Might have benefited from extra takes with some of the actors but...
A blooper reel would cause me to praise this greatly.
This is a labor of love. Great job. I liked how Batman laughed and said "I never left." It really injects some humor and humanity into Batman. Thanks for making this and I hope we see more.
Admittedly the costume is a bit funny, but overall 9.99/10 Goldblums
Cosmic Asteroid Entertainment seriously why can’t Hollywood give us the Dark Knight returns movie as a trilogy? How many people would love to see that?
RUclips finally recommended this absolute gem to me. It has the vibe of the Paul Dini and Bruce Timm versionings of Batman with nods to the 60s series and even the Nolanverse. Wyatt is very good at inhabiting the dual roles of Bruce Wayne and Batman. The stand-out scene to me was Bruce’s park encounter with the Mutants. The shift from Bruce to Batman, the following tension, and then the disappointment when the Mutants backed off...amazing acting. Truly showed the struggle between both parts of Wayne’s life and mind. I hope you’re doing well in 2021, Wyatt! I’m subbed to see what more you’re able to create. Cheers.
If you can do this with $2500, this would be a legitimately amazing movie with a budget of millions. Imho, this felt more like Gotham than the trilogy did. Awesome!
This is the most amazing fan film I have seen in my life this should be a movie
Thanks David!!
The only thing I don't like it's batman voice actor and the suit, but the movie, EPIC!
Pll ppl00lppppl
It's either overacting or under acting...
What do you mean? Just curious I’m not very good at judging acting
Although the film was made on a low budget, the effort to keep it as close to the original material as possible comes to be astonishing! I can't deny this movie would need to further refine some visual effects in the future to get to the right point, but even so, I ended up applauding the whole work after started rolling the credits.
As a fan of the original comic, I'd give my congratulations for the strength of will that you and your team had to film and finish every scene made, and I hope you can continue the work on the next parts of the series. ;)
Thanks Oliver. Kind words!!
Oliver Raf What? comic is completly different.
Yes, I agree the movie is not accurate. Some of the costumes and acting are very out of place, and scenes were filmed in different takes due to budget limitations, but it still keeps the pacing and most of the key points from the comic. Even with this, I can see they were really trying to get closer to the source material.
That was pretty amazing. Great job with the costumes and makeup work, and some solid portrayals of the characters. It's great to see what a few passionate people can do with hard work and time. Fantastic.
Loved it! I personally feel like The Dark Knight Returns story can be placed at anytime, just change the president and such. It's a timeless story in my personal opinion.
$2,500? It's really intriguing that you can do this much with low budget. Love it you just gained another subscriber . Hope we can see more wonderful content like this in the future ...
Why is RUclips only just now recommending this to me? This is fucking awesome dude
Glad they did! Spread it around!! Hey, while we're at it, ever seen Rain: An X-Men Fan Film? One of my personal favorites:

I also really like Hoshino:

If the person who made this sees my comment, just wanted you to know I think you're absolutely brilliant. You did such an amazing job bringing the story to life. The pacing is so great.
Thank you, Ski3hub!! I do appreciate it!! I know it isn't perfect, but I'm very proud of it and am trying my best to finish it!! And I have other fun appearances and short films coming this year. Stay tuned.
@@wyattweed will do. I cant wait to see what else you have planned. You also were great as Bruce. The "I never left" part gave me chills.
@@wyattweed Thank you for your hard work.My childhood seem back to live ......... Again thank you.....
The actor who plays the older, mature, bitter Bruce Wayne is really good! Wonder what else he’s been in? He’s a good actor.
Thanks! I was in Star Trek: The Next Generation in a minor non-speaking role and I was the Boar predator in Predator 2. And a bunch of other low-budget stuff - Guyver: Dark Hero, Kung Fu Rascals, Dead Of Winter, and other things.
This is great!! I need a sequel!! Come on!! Let’s do this!!
I've watched this multiple times over the years, and every time it's amazing; I love how this was pulled straight off the pages of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, and it's done so perfectly
Thanks! Kudos to my partner and lighting guy, Robert Clark, who came up with some nice looks while we were shooting. And my wife Gayle for finding me some of the better locations, like the racetrack and the jail at the end.
Wyatt Weed that's awesome! I'm actually planning on going to college to be a film director, so amazing works of art like this made by normal people without a multi-million dollar studio inspires me so much!
This film was amazing, especially for the budget, I really liked the suit, the lighting, sets, and everything, it's really comic accurate, and I hope to see it continue.
Thanks!! It means a lot to me that you liked the suit, as that seems to be a bone of contention with many viewers. But it's accurate to the comic, so what are you gonna do? Looking forward to doing more films. I hope to start shooting more scenes this year!
I’ve seen each of the WB Batman movies countless times, and can honestly say this ranks with them. The budget constraints were very subtly handled by smart writing that never allows the movie to feel cheap. Hats off to the director, writer, and star, he killed it. I can’t wait for part II.
Thanks, Nick! That's very nice of you to say.
I'm surprised you were able to pull this off for only $2500. Well done. Looking forward to ongoing entries.
Kevin Hagler
😯 2500?!
😕 Not Bad at all
I had chills watching this at times. Cannot wait for part 2. I’m in, subscribed, love it.
I have wanted to see a grey and blue Batman with white eyes forever.
Hollywood needs to catch up.
True that. Batman needs white eyes in a movie 😆
Tubsy man why? It’s the same story as the comics but with cheap costumes and sets
Tubsy man yeah the suit looks amazing
This is inspiring and cheesy at the same time...
Hey Wyatt I met you earlier today and all i can say about your film here is it's awesome and i cant wait for the rest man. Seriously great work keep it up you're a great batman and bruce wayne.
Thanks, Neil!! Glad you liked it!!
This does show that a true live action Dark Knight Returns is completely viable .. well done great work.
The news reports in this story always reminds me of ones in Robocop. I adore them.
That's kind of what I was going for. Truth be told, I think the comic influenced the news reports in Robocop!
Wyatt Weed I wouldn't be at all surprised.
Thanks for the reply by the way. The video was brilliant. I'd love to see a Part 2 😉
Congratulations Wyatt... with the limited budget, your production able to visualize this masterpiece. Hopefully you able to secure more budget for part 2. I'm rooting for you and I believe in Wyatt Weed! Your passion in making this movie is proof that money is not only the solution to make a great storytelling.
Carrie Kelly!...My favorite ''Robin''.That chick is all-balls AND brains to boot.
Love the film.I read the original story so many times I'm quoting dialog.
Can't wait to see the 'Bat-Mobile' and the 'Big Blue Boy Scout'
AND ol' Olly...
It's not easy to transform a comic like this one into a movie, but your attempt is pretty good
In spite of all it’s flaws
It was a fantastic attempt
It takes serious dedication and love for the source material to will your vision into reality
And perhaps for that maybe even just that
This deserves a batload of respect
“Subway killings have reached an all time high”
Arthur fleck: ...
One of my favorites. Wonderful job on a tight budget. Love the classic suit and the white eyes, take note Hollywood. Keep up the good work!
Wow, really good live adaptation of the graphic novel. I didn't get into Bruce Wayne's portrayal until the park scene, but loved it afterward. I applaud going with the comic book version of the blue and gray bat suit. I swear I saw white eyes in the part where he grabs the guy through the door. I saw a thumb nail of yall doing another production to this and I urge you to have the bat cowl have white eyes. No other movie has done this and it would be great to see it in live action. Great job!
If we can get more episodes made, we will absolutely continue the white eyes. And yes, you did see white eyes when he came through the door - we had to do it without the white eyes in for the actual take, but later added them in post with animation.
9:53 haters will say it’s fake
True! Obviously this is an FX shot, but that original car, the 1953 Alfa Romeo BAT 5 is amazing. And I want to say there's only one in the world, the original concept car? www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z10320/alfa-romeo-bat-5.aspx
And of course, if anyone could own that one concept car, it would be Bruce Wayne...
So this is what happened to the film school kids who didn’t make it...
Just kidding, guys. Certainly better than I could ever hope to do. I can’t NOT LIKE this. It brings back too much nostalgia. DC comics and Warner Brothers owe Frank Miller BIG TIME for creating this masterpiece.
Read the graphic novel years ago when it came out. Loved it. Recently saw the animated film. Came nowhere near capturing the spirit of the graphic novel.
I really wanted to like the animated film, but it left me cold...it was almost too straight of an adaptation? Also, I though Peter Weller was an inspired casting choice, but I was very unimpressed with the voice acting...
@@wyattweed Agreed
Subbed for part 2, I’m in this shit is rad
I won’t pretend to know anything about making a film.....except that I know it cannot be easy. Second time I’ve watched this....and I think it has the perfect mix of darkness and “camp humor”. And that grin, by Batman at the end and when he turned to the cop and said “I never left”, mixed with that Joker? Screams for MORE! Enjoyable, Wyatt....most enjoyable!
This was amazingly done, you really followed the novel to the bone!
Thank the Gods someone is feeling the love of being creative and doing this. Good job! Keep em coming.
I don't know what it is, but this dude is awesome as old Bruce Wayne/Batman.
it never dawned on me til seeing your version, but Bruce suffers from PTSD from witnessing the death of his parents! Great psychological take!
Thanks - I think that's the only way it works in the "real" world.
"That's how it starts... The fever, the rage, the feeling of... helplessness. Turns good men cruel."

Batman: I’m just gonna take this money from you. Thank you. (Rips it in half).
Heh heh...YOINK! *rips bills*
I woulda went and picked up all if it
Then tape it back
Destorying money is a felony
Screw the big studios! Here’s where the really creative work is being done. Great job!
Next to 1989 Batman, this is, in my opinion, the best version yet.
Pretty good for a fan film! Good casting too, you show a great attention to detail in trying to match the comic book.
Really awesome can’t wait to see part 2.
Great job man !!!
Ok, this was cheesy, yet cool. You did a great job and I'd like to see more!
Remarkable work, compact, essential, not perfect but extremely close to the spirit of the character and the work from which it derives. Someone, in the upper floors, should look at it very carefully and reflect ... Think deeply ....
When I first saw Commissioner Gordon, I thought it was Burt Reynolds.
So did I.
for all those people bitching about how cheap this fan film was.... back off... i will like to see how good you can make it... for me, this was really good, and i love how this person could do something like this with so many passion.... congratulations for all of you guys and keep it going..... dont bother about all this bunch of fools.....!!!
Thanks, Ali!! I do appreciate your comments, and it's gratifying when someone out there "gets you"!!
As someone who dreams of making Batman films when I'm grown up, this was freaking amazing! Everything about this is awesome. I usually don't watch fan films, but something told me to do so on this one, and I'm glad I listened. That costume for Batman is really cool, and the actors do a fantastic job, particularly you Mr. Weed. You did an awesome job! Almost like Bruce jumped off the page itself. Spectacular work. I'm excited for part two, since it was always my favorite part of the comic. The Joker looks awesome in this. I know this probably takes quite a bit of time to make, but when part two gets finished, I'm gonna be right here ready to watch it! Great job!
The amazing deal of care and effort is apparent here, and for that I give high commendations! Not that I am anyone special or anything more than a die hard fan of the source material. However, I feel like I should bite my tongue but I must mention that it was driving me nuts that the gentleman who played Gordon was not cast instead as Bruce! He was photographically IDENTICAL to what Wayne looks like in the comics and to have that face at your disposal but instead cast yourself is a bit of a mystery (and a bit frustrating) to me. But I get it, if I was directing I would want to put on the suit too. But hands down, the one here who really hit the nail on the head and actually performed the part/lines and made them work better than when I read them in my head was Ava as Robin. She steals the show here, no contest. The future slang Carrie uses in the books always came off a bit odd to me and never sounded right in my head while reading, Ava translated and delivered these lines in a way that at last made sense to me. So rad, she killed it!
Love Ava, she was a great find, and kind of IS Carrie - she's a sweet high school kid with crazy hair and a smart mouth!! I hope she can come back and do more. As for Bruce, I have to tell you, Rick (Gordon) really did have the face, and is a great actor, but is also 70 years old and not in the shape he used to be. While his face fits, I don't know that he could have gotten into the shape needed and then been able to show up for probably 18 of the 24 shooting days, not for free. If I had money to pay, maybe, but if I had money, I still would have cast Rick as Gordon and found another age-appropriate actor who was in better shape. It was tough enough for ME, and I'm only 52!! I do understand that I don't exactly look the part - I'm a very youthful 52, and DKR's Bruce was a very beat-up 55. But besides really wanting to play the part, I also knew I was the only guy who was going to show up day after freaking day and do this!! If it's any consolation, I want to rough it up and play it more gray, with a darker, meaner mood as this goes along.
Awesome effort Wyatt with a triple A budget this production would be epic what i do like about this is that you show a faithful adaptation can be done respect all the way
Nice.but the costume looks more like Adam west returns
F**king Awesome Job, Mr. Weed! I'm gonna' check out your other films, too!!
How to humiliate Hollywood in 1,2,3
this would work great as an HBO Max TV show
Hollywood may have all the money in the world, but no one does justice to the source material like the fans. Excellent job!!!
Thanks 94bkb! It was definitely a labor of love!!
batman wearing a batman t-shirt lmao 😂
To sum up, this fan made film can only be described with one word "BAT-TASTIC" 🦇 💥
Well done live adaptation. Sad no follow up.
Should make a kickstarter for the sequel!
I would love to, but I'm trying to be REALLY careful about not upsetting Warners or DC!
Wyatt Weed Also the dark knight strikes again sucked.
'This Dracula looking dude' very original! Very well done.
Fantastic work, great conception, great visualization on a tight budget. In the area where it was most at risk, the presence of the Batman, was well done.
This was awesome man! I reaaally like the slow and psychologic take on Batman :)
Not complaining but Batman sounds like solid snake
...and looks
Actually, it's Solid Snake who sounds like Batman.
for the budget this was pretty well made, decent. this feels like a concept film. Kind of gives us an idea of what the flow might be if they could ever make this a feature length and with a bigger budget. Great Job :)
WOW! Nicely Done Wyatt! My ONLY criticism is that "Alfred" should have an English Accent! Other then that... I think it was VERY true to the Comic/Story! I LOVED the part where You/Bruce gets confronted by the goons on the sidewalk! I was SO THERE With you! I got all Pumped Up too and that's when I got REALLY Drawn in!
Also... is the character of "Carrie" the next "Robin"? Because she LOOKS Just like the girl in the comics that becomes the next Robin!
Again WELL DONE! I can't WAIT to see the next one! PLEASE make more! :D
Joe
Needs colour grading.
Loved it costumes where pretty close to the animated move can't wait to see what you could do with a bigger budget
Joker looks really good in this
Thanks - we need to make his hair greener in the next film...
Jetfire 435 thank you!! Wyatt better make me look much greener next time around :-)
Acting in this is great, wonderful job.
Holy fuckin shit this was amazing can’t wait for a next part. I’d say u nailed batman a lot more than some of the movies
Thanks!! I'd be thrilled if I could just get a few million dollars to make a film...
Oh my god, when he is drinking and listening to the voicemails, he looks like the Christian Bale version of Bruce Wayne but older-- You have to compare pictures to see where i'm getting at. I love this film so much!
Great production! This is the version that Hollywood should have done!
Nice! Wyatt I dig that you used the white eyes on the suit.
Thanks - I don't understand why no one else has done it, or that none of the feature films have done it. Other than the fact that they pay a lot for actors, so they at least want to see their eyes...
The white eyes give it the comic feel, and also the vibe of the creature of the night, that he is not quite human. I totally respect the choice. You guy did a great job on the fan film looking forward to more. Star Wars... Hint Hint... lol Great Job really.
I know this was an absolute labor of love.I watch it over and over again.I know this took a shit load of time and effort.I so hope to see more.Again,a lot of work went into making this.I appreciate every bit of it.Thanks man🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I've rewatched this in it's entirety and specific scenes I think 5 times now? This is an extremely fun watch and I love the way you've went about this film :) I think the suit is my favorite part, first of all the actor just wears it really well, that alone makes Batman look straight from the page, but the blue color scheme and the cowl aswell? I just love the suit! I love the acting. I love how throughout this you can feel the joy I imagine came from putting this together. You've made something really nice here, and I'm eagerly awaiting the second part :)
This was really good. Surprised at the white eyes, made a great extra touch! Every bit of it felt great and Bruce turning around on the staircase was bone chilling. I read the comics and this felt very nailed down aside from the Mall which, I understand why that be the case. I really hope the Joker and Batman scene will play out very well like the movie and even the comics did. Also I have no idea how you will do the Mud Pit scene...but I look very forward to it. I know it has been four years and I see the updates on the channel, but here is to hoping for even just one more chapter. Make DC Comics hire you for this!
Thanks for all the kind words. To be honest, I'm having a hard time with the mud pit scene, but I think I have it figured out...
The weather man was so great. Such a natural actor. This was pretty great. A lot of love went into this and it shows!
Hey Wyatt when does part 2 of this epic fan film come out cuz I really can’t wait
it was actually way more better than i expected
This is actually really good, I loved the suit although it would look much better in black instead of blue.
I have to say, though - If we didn't start with the blue and yellow and grey version of the suit, then the switch over to the black and grey wouldn't be as effective. We pulled the blue/yellow/grey one right out of the first issue of the comic.
@@wyattweed Yeah ur right it still does look insanely cool. And I loved the white eyes.
It’s blue in the comic
This def pays homage in so many updated ways as like an adaptation to Adam West batman! Love it and well well done!!
One of the best batman fan film ever made
Keith, first of all, it's "you're" or "you are" and not "your". Second, Jesus, you went out of your way to leave not one, but two comments on how bad you think this sucked? Well, sorry, I didn't approve the other comment, because reasons, but I take exception to the above comment. Tell you what: You find me a 5-year old who makes a better Batman fan film than mine, and I will pull this one down. Good luck with that.
PS - Learn how to use punctuation.
@@dj2bklyn up yurs wanker.
Good job! True to the story. Can’t wait for the next one.
I hope there’s a part two because this was an awesome adaptation
2:13 this guy looks like the 1989 Batman newscaster
Brings back memories of the eighties with The Flash TV show! Nice job! Can’t wait to see more!
this was actually awesome...had the millers feeling
Why does this have so many dislikes? It's amazing.
I loved the joker in this, he was perfect! Amazing work! I hope there will be a part two!
ruclips.net/video/yOE3x_aNho4/видео.html
Was really good. Congratulations! I loved it. Can't wait for the second half. I loved your interpretation of Bruce, and the joker remind me the one from the animated series in the 90's.
