@@roninblue5885 It was. I was 10 when I started living there, and 12 when I left. I learned to speak Japanese, went to a Japanese school for a time, studied Judo, and visited many beautiful places. The experience was one that let me compare & contrast what two cultures I was part of, and gave me a better perspective on each.

For someone who is not married to a Japanese, and not young and rich (special point system for them), you have to stay in Japan 10 years straight, have no criminal record, earn over 3,000,000 yen per year (if single), and pay into the health system and pension system for the previous 2 years before applying. There is no special treatment for "retirees".
That could change in the future if Japanese don't start having families otherwise the natural Japanese population & culture could be in trouble. They'll be begging people to live in Japan, but possibly not retirees.

living in japan is a LOT easier than it used to be. i lived there for my second time in 87-90. no internet...only 8 channels of TV in osaka...no satellite...no kindle readers... we did a vacation to guam...the wife and in-laws went to the beach...i walked up and down the aisles of safeway and spent over $100 buying used books to take back with me. =D
This is the best video I have found on this subject! Thank you!! I want to retire in Japan with all my heart. I agree with everything you said, and I know all about the pros and cons. Honestly, the Earthquakes did scare me when I lived there ... the building would shake and I would get dizzy and feel weird as I raced to put on my motorcycle helmet. Ha ha. Also, the heat in summer is powerful ... it took my breath away! But the pros outweigh the cons a Million times for me ... the onsens, the ancient trees, temples, the food, etc. My wife is Japanese, but apparently she cannot be my sponsor bc she is going to stay in the US and continue working here.
A very thorough take on retiring in Japan, Ronin! Since my wife is Japanese, we'll probably retire there. It's actually quite cheap if you retire outside of the big cities. My wife is from Fukuoka, which is my favorite city in Japan. Winters are too cold for me, so maybe we'll spend winters renting an AirBnB in warm Southeast Asia countries. I'll probably run into you from time to time! :) Hope you're doing well. I've been really busy lately and haven't been visiting youtube because I can spend too much time on it. But after next month I should be less busy.

We have just been experimenting over RUclips this past year, all in good fun, while still waiting for Japan's green light to enter and also completing requests on country reviews for some of the subscribers. Although I've lived in a city called Hamamatsu back in my 20's for a short while, I never honestly thought I would want to retire to Japan, but recently, it doesn't seem all that bad. Yes, the countryside seems to be a good target, there are Akiya (Abandoned homes) in Japan that I'm making a vlog about now, interested to see if this is a possibility as well. I'm sure the combination of Japan and Southeast Asia will work out for you guys! Fukuoka is a beautiful area as well, Okinawa doesn't seem all that bad either, Japan's Hawaii!
great video, what about Kyoto rent, I hear that it is affordable there, am looking for a 1 room studio apartment, or i would like to move in to a leo palace apartment, I plan on getting married in Japan 🇯🇵, because I would like to live there permanently and be seen as one of Japan's residents, am also disabled and would like to know what kinds of programs that Japan has to offer for the disabled, and I would like to know how disabled people are treated in Japan, because I have a learning disability that makes it hard to learn, like math, spelling, reading and writing, you could say that am looking to become a hard working citizen of Japan 🇯🇵, I look forward to your reply and thanks 😊 👍
Really appreciate your mention about the gender inequality. For a women who loves her independence and freedom, male chauvinism may feel really suffocating.

It's pretty much impossible to get a permanent visa to stay in Japan unless you are married to a Japanese. That makes Japan off-limits for retirees.
