Hi JJ 👋 So it turns out the backlight bleeding protector would NOT have been compatible with my particular IPS display anyway. It depends on which one you've got! Have you checked yours is compatible? If so, it may be possible (although tricky). Here's the video where I attempted to installed it, and ruined my GBA ☠ ruclips.net/video/UQwDn8kXqa8/видео.html
1. Buy NDSL(already big enough, bright enough display) - $15 VS $150+ for GBA+ips kit 2. Buy R4i - $4 (instead of $100 for ezflash) 4. Dump all your GBA roms on your R4i and put it in your NDSL 5. PROFIT!
Thanks for pointing this out Elektronzer! 🙏 You are absolutely right. It wasn’t until after this video that I realised that the backlight bleeding protector wouldn’t have been compatible anyway. You’d need to find another way of resolving the backlight bleed on a transparent shell! 👌 Unfortunately, my next attempt at resolving this didn’t end so well for the GBA 😅 ruclips.net/video/UQwDn8kXqa8/видео.html
Rechargeable AAs, Alkaline or Lithium > integrated usb charging battery packs. Instantly swappable and you never gotta play tethered to a dongle. One less vulnerability to the shell for dirt or beverages to seep into. I wish my iPhone had swappable AAs, even. 😂
really would recommend spending the time to solder the wires for the on screen display controls. without it you can't toggle frame blending, which is a must if you are put off by the flickering shadows and effects in various games caused by the higher refresh rate of the IPS panel. I went about a week with just touch sensors before I couldn't stand the flickering in pretty much every game I wanted to play, so I soldered the controls and wished I had done it from day 1 lol. it's also really annoying not being able to use the touch sensor to go back the other way in settings. so if you miss your preferred setting, you have to loop all the way back around again. where as with the buttons soldered you just tap the other shoulder button.
Good stuff! 🔥 It’s definitely worth the extra effort to do the soldering. Even if people don’t have a soldering iron already, this would be the perfect opportunity to get hold of one! 👌 Thanks for weighing in 🙏
The EZ-Flash arrives ready to go, however you’ll need to install your own ROM’s on the device 👌 That being said, I’ve just reviewed an alternative (for the game boy colour) that came with a TONNE of ROMs pre-installed! 🤩 Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks for the video 😉

I see so many videos of custom gba consoles but I never see anyone doing any modding for original nintendo ds consoles. Do ppl just not like it? Is it difficult to customize due to the nature of how it's built? Are good batteries nearly impossible to find? I see custom ds lites but none for the original ds. It's my favorite ds.
This is an interesting point you raise, and I agree! 💯 I too have fond memories with my original DS 🙏 If I had to guess, it may be a combination of the difficulty of re-assembly with the ribbon cables going through the hinges, and the overall size. Maybe even availability of parts? 🤔 What kind of mod would you have in mind? As you will be aware, many people like to mod the DS Lite by removing the top screen to make a GBA player, at a more managable size 😁 I also recall seeing people install a cool light-bar between the empty hinges 🤩 I think overall, the sleeker design may lend itself to an easier and more rewarding modding experience.
I was thinking that I wished the ds had screen upgrades and battery upgrades. A bigger battery with a USB-C charger upgrade. I see that for gba but not ds. I guess it's just easier for gba. I'd love to have a reshelled og ds with better screens and rechargeable battery USB-C upgrade. I'd like that a lot.
@@calculateddeclination5534 Oh man... Now those would be some worthy upgrades! 🤩 It's definitely about time for USB-C, not their proprietary Nintendo DS Charger! 👌Yeah I'd love to see some cool transparent shell upgrades too
Hi, good day to you! Can you please talk about any sound upgrades available for the GBA? I just purchased my first "stock" GBA from ebay, and I am looking to upgrade to the ips 3.0 screen, the audio amp and speaker, the rechargeable battery, and I also want to do the hdmi out and docking station mods that Macho Nacho did on his minish cap version. Most of all, though, I am SUPER interested in the mod you did to get ALL those games on an SD card. That is awesome!!
G'day Joe! 👋 I haven't done any sound upgrades yet. I am quite happy with the volume and quality of the original speaker! That being said, I have noticed that since I installed the IPS display and USB-C battery mods, I am able to hear a faint 'humming' noise while using headphones. As such, I have bought a "Power Cleaner" from Retro Modding that will take care of this :D As a spoiler, I have also just bought a new IPS 3.0 Kit too! 🤫 Oh man, the HDMI out would be so cool - I nearly went with that but they were sold out. Oh yeah, the EZ-Flash Omega (Definitive Edition) is such an amazing device that I can't recommend enough! I've heard some people love collecting physical cartridges, but for me personally, it's all about the convenience of playing ROM's all; from one cartridge 😉
Oh man, I am sorry to hear that! I have just tested for you, and mine is still going strong 💪 It sounds unusual for that to happen, hopefully you were able to get a replacement since it happened so quickly after purchase
@@goatreviews You are welcome! I do hope you like it as I have! Some people complain about how the colors are too bright (Which, they are, but hey, there's always color mods, right?), and complain about the music (I actually like the music) If you ever wish to get into rom hacks, one I recommend is Dawn of Dissonance! it's a rom hack of Dawn of Sorrow, and completely changes so many things of the game, and you play as Juste (Protagonist of Harmony of Dissonance)

Picked up a custom Etsy GBA with a glow in the dark Crystal shell. Has the V.2 IPS screen. Thing is beautiful to play on I just use EBL USB Rechargeable AA's they run a good while. I have the EZ Flash Omega which is the older model of the Definitive Edition you have.
Nice pickup, Bert! That sounds incredible - I’d love to see that thing in the dark! 🤩 Interesting! Is there much of a feature difference between the Definitive Edition and the normal Omega?
G’day Taspey, great question! 🙏 I can’t say for sure as I’ve not had to change it yet myself, but one things for sure: The button cell batteries are FAR EASIER to replace than on a standard game cartridge, which are soldered to the circuit board. The EZ-Flash Omega has a single, easy to open screw, as well as a standard battery release for the button cell battery - which is also a standard, readily available size. I’ve heard that the batteries on normal Game Boy games can last upward of 10 years - so let’s hope the EZ-Flash can match or at least approach this 😁
Cool havnt seen it for years and can't remember what it's called, but have the gameboy that folds and a load of carts in a cupboard somewhere! Love to see any upgrades for that!
Yes, Paul! 🙏 The folding one would be the “Game Boy Advance SP”. An absolute banger - it had a backlit screen by default, and shared the same games library with the GBA! Time to whip it out for some waves of nostalgia, Paul! 🌊🤤

Maybe it's been resolved now, or else is there a chance that it's just 'cached' on my browser from when it was available 🤔
How long does the battery last may I ask? Debating whether or not to just buy without the usb-c battery, and use rechargeable AAs instead. I bought AAs for my 360 controller as I felt the rechargeable pack was diminishing greatly. I get these are obviously brand new and not a decade+ old. Just wondering what your take on that would be. Also, going for the clear purple myself! Nice to see it on camera before buying! Great video also, found it very informative, even though I’m buying a pre built one lol 👍 cheers!
Like, Zoinks, Scoob! Great question. With an IPS display, the specs indicate this battery can last 11 hours of play time! Personally I like to keep my battery topped up (just in case), so have never had to push it that long. I can say I put in a solid 2 hours of play time yesterday without denting it 😃🔋 I like having the option of “play while it’s charging” if I ever did deplete it fully though. If you’re having any doubts about a USB-C battery, you might also consider investing in some rechargeable AA batteries with a charging dock - that’s what I use for most of my other electronics! 😉 This is the model I use and would recommend if you go this route: amzn.to/3JxDsTO 📊 As an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. G’day Penguin! 🐧 Great question. The cheapest GBA light mod? Look up “GBA Worm Light” 😜 But seriously, there is a previous generation of backlit screens for the GBA before the IPS displays (called the AGS-101), which you may be able to find cheaper, or else in some “pre-built” GBA’s on eBay. You might want to do a little research on mods. You're a year or two behind on some of the categories. The laminated IPS screens are much nicer than the separated ones. The USBC battery from R6 is one of the lower capacity batteries and out of all the other battery mods, it offers some of the least safety features. The battery is likely to degrade quickly and won't run as long. I recommend Retromodding's battery over the R6 one. Makho has a video thoroughly testing the two. The shell that you used is the old version. FunnyPlaying's new mirror finish shells were made using an updated mold and the finish on them is much nicer. The buttons you used are fine. I prefer cloud game store buttons as their molds are closer to the OEM sizes than FunnyPlaying's, but that's just personal preference. You can also get much nicer resin buttons now from Lab15 or Yesterday's tech. If you were going for best GBA, you'd probably need to start with one of the FunnyPlaying PCBs.
G'day Kyrox! 👋 Let me start by saying THANK YOU, for your thorough, constructive response. I very much appreciate it. 🙏 It looks like there are some further advancements I need to look in to! I'm a fan of Makho, and will look in to the video 🙂 I did spot the mirror finish shell recently, though I didn't know they had an updated mold! Good pickup. Agreed! I would love to go for some fancier buttons in another build. For now, all black will be just fine for this builds theme. Would you care to elaborate on the FunnyPlaying PCB? Am I to understand they are producing a new motherboard from scratch, removing the need for a 'host' GBA? 🤯
@@goatreviews FunnyPlaying sells a redesigned PCB with new parts. The only thing you need from an original GBA are the CPU and RAM. It has a better amp, more efficient power regulator, and button leds integrated into the board.

Where can I get this already set up.. just standard GBA, no major upgrades, just with the games and type c battery?
The best place to pickup a used GBA would be your local Retro Games store, or failing that, eBay! 👌
As for the modding parts such as USB-C battery, I’ve left links to them in the description.
Im thinking of getting the full pre built kit, but where do you get the USB C Battery Cover? ive seen a few in simple colours, but cant seem to find a Clear Orange that matches the pre built pictures.
Awesome, I hope you enjoy it, brother! 👌 Oh man, the USB-C battery covers seem to be the ONE part that is difficult to get hold of in any form of variety 😅 Sometimes they can be found on eBay 👀
i also always loved the transparent tech look. especially the colorful stuff
There’s just something so APPEALING about it, right? 🤩 Agreed. Colourful is even better! 👌
Sonic Advance Series is one of my faves
Thanks for the recommendation, TheKiddShoe! 🙏 I’ll have to spend some quality time on this series. I was a HUGE fan of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for GameCube 🤩
very cool that deep blue and black accent colors are superb ..this mods has its charm..!!
I appreciate that, Shiryu! 🙏
I agree, it’s a colour scheme that just works so well together 👌
i built mine without the backlight bleeding protector - is it possible to install this part now? if so is it complicated to do so?
Hi JJ 👋 So it turns out the backlight bleeding protector would NOT have been compatible with my particular IPS display anyway. It depends on which one you've got! Have you checked yours is compatible? If so, it may be possible (although tricky).
Here's the video where I attempted to installed it, and ruined my GBA ☠
ruclips.net/video/UQwDn8kXqa8/видео.html
Dope Gameboy man!
Cheers WhiteOps! 🙏 I’m having SO MUCH fun with it 🤩
1. Buy NDSL(already big enough, bright enough display) - $15 VS $150+ for GBA+ips kit
2. Buy R4i - $4 (instead of $100 for ezflash)
4. Dump all your GBA roms on your R4i and put it in your NDSL
5. PROFIT!
This is a great value alternative! 👌
I like that the DS can also use the EZFlash too.
Thanks for sharing 🙏
I am confused. The backlight bleed page says its not compatible with a IPS screen and is not needed. Did you not use a IPS display?
Thanks for pointing this out Elektronzer! 🙏
You are absolutely right. It wasn’t until after this video that I realised that the backlight bleeding protector wouldn’t have been compatible anyway. You’d need to find another way of resolving the backlight bleed on a transparent shell! 👌
Unfortunately, my next attempt at resolving this didn’t end so well for the GBA 😅

Sure thing, John! 👌
Looks like Retromodding is out of stock right now - but thankfully I found all the colour options here for you:

Rechargeable AAs, Alkaline or Lithium > integrated usb charging battery packs. Instantly swappable and you never gotta play tethered to a dongle. One less vulnerability to the shell for dirt or beverages to seep into. I wish my iPhone had swappable AAs, even. 😂
Fair point, man! 👌 You also get to load them like shotgun shells 💪😎
for say like on pokemon games can you still trade with non modded gba?
@@jeremiahmcmurray7041 Hi Jeremiah, there should be no issue with using the port on the modded GBA with a connection cable to a regular GBA 👌
really would recommend spending the time to solder the wires for the on screen display controls. without it you can't toggle frame blending, which is a must if you are put off by the flickering shadows and effects in various games caused by the higher refresh rate of the IPS panel.
👌 Thanks for weighing in 🙏
Can you buy the “EZ-Flash “ already set up ?
The EZ-Flash arrives ready to go, however you’ll need to install your own ROM’s on the device 👌
That being said, I’ve just reviewed an alternative (for the game boy colour) that came with a TONNE of ROMs pre-installed!

💯 I too have fond memories with my original DS 🙏
If I had to guess, it may be a combination of the difficulty of re-assembly with the ribbon cables going through the hinges, and the overall size.

Really want to buy a setup for me and my son 🤩
It’s a load of fun to play. Some truly amazing games are on the platform!👌 Are you planning to buy one prebuilt, or mod an older GBA yourself?
Hi, good day to you! Can you please talk about any sound upgrades available for the GBA? I just purchased my first "stock" GBA from ebay, and I am looking to upgrade to the ips 3.0 screen, the audio amp and speaker, the rechargeable battery, and I also want to do the hdmi out and docking station mods that Macho Nacho did on his minish cap version. Most of all, though, I am SUPER interested in the mod you did to get ALL those games on an SD card. That is awesome!!
G'day Joe! 👋
I haven't done any sound upgrades yet. I am quite happy with the volume and quality of the original speaker! That being said, I have noticed that since I installed the IPS display and USB-C battery mods, I am able to hear a faint 'humming' noise while using headphones. As such, I have bought a "Power Cleaner" from Retro Modding that will take care of this :D
As a spoiler, I have also just bought a new IPS 3.0 Kit too!
Dose your ezflash still work? I got one and it last a day
Oh man, I am sorry to hear that! I have just tested for you, and mine is still going strong 💪 It sounds unusual for that to happen, hopefully you were able to get a replacement since it happened so quickly after purchase
You did forget- Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance... That was the first game I ever played in my life.
Awesome! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Castlevania games I’ve played through, so will check this one out. Thank you for the recommendation, DFO! 🙏
@@goatreviews You are welcome! I do hope you like it as I have! Some people complain about how the colors are too bright (Which, they are, but hey, there's always color mods, right?), and complain about the music (I actually like the music)
If you ever wish to get into rom hacks, one I recommend is Dawn of Dissonance! it's a rom hack of Dawn of Sorrow, and completely changes so many things of the game, and you play as Juste (Protagonist of Harmony of Dissonance)
@dfo627 I tend to give things a chance with an open mind… and bright colours sounds amazing actually 🤩
Can’t wait to check out the sound track too 👌

Hello mate, I just came across your videos and they’re great. I have a quick question. I have a G shock that I love but it’s pretty battered now. I used this watch when I was deployed to Afghan, Do you know anyone that could mod it with a new case and strap?
G’day Henry! 👋 Thanks for your service, and viewership 🙏
Hmmm, who might be best to repair it… 🤔
Even without knowing what model of G-Shock you have, I have an answer for you…
It’s you! 🫵
I genuinely believe that anyone can do a bezel + strap swap themselves - and guess what else? Doing so even adds to the proud feeling you’ll have when its on your wrist 😁
If you’re looking for inspiration, the main featured video on my RUclips Channel page shows you how to do a mod, and even has a link to some parts. And, if you need any further help, I’m only a message away 😉 Best of luck!
Where can I buy this? With the games and everything?
G'day Uriel! 👋
For this build, you would need the motherboard from an original GBA. All of the other physical hardware / parts can be found on www.retromodding.com/discount/goat?ref=opeeoa6h (Be sure to use Discount Code at checkout to save: GOAT) I have linked to the parts in the description!
As for games, one option is to use GBA Cartridges you own, and then using something like a DS Lite, drag the Game File onto an R4 card! Then you can transfer the game (and save file) to your EZ-Flash Micro SD card 😉
Do let me know if you have any other questions 🙏
Can you use a 48pin tsop 1mb for about four dollars to increase the ram?

Picked up a custom Etsy GBA with a glow in the dark Crystal shell. Has the V.2 IPS screen. Thing is beautiful to play on I just use EBL USB Rechargeable AA's they run a good while. I have the EZ Flash Omega which is the older model of the Definitive Edition you have.
Nice pickup, Bert! That sounds incredible - I’d love to see that thing in the dark! 🤩
Interesting! Is there much of a feature difference between the Definitive Edition and the normal Omega?
How long does that cell battery last for the cartridge pack?
G’day Taspey, great question! 🙏
I can’t say for sure as I’ve not had to change it yet myself, but one things for sure: The button cell batteries are FAR EASIER to replace than on a standard game cartridge, which are soldered to the circuit board.

G’day Penguin! 🐧 Great question.
The cheapest GBA light mod? Look up “GBA Worm Light” 😜
But seriously, there is a previous generation of backlit screens for the GBA before the IPS displays (called the AGS-101), which you may be able to find cheaper, or else in some “pre-built” GBA’s on eBay.
Incidentally, I also just stumbled into this FRONTLIGHT mod on AliExpress, which is substantially cheaper than a backlight mod, though I cannot vouch for it personally. Keen to hear your thoughts!:

Let me start by saying THANK YOU, for your thorough, constructive response. I very much appreciate it. 🙏
It looks like there are some further advancements I need to look in to! I'm a fan of Makho, and will look in to the video 🙂
I did spot the mirror finish shell recently, though I didn't know they had an updated mold!
RetroSix literally is longest lasting battery mod to date still.
