The Reality of Rescue | Raisin's Story

  • Raisin was a young jenny donkey that we intercepted from auction through our Buy-Out Program in May. As you can hear in the video, we were shocked to see her step off the trailer with a horrific broken leg. We were told told the injury had happened 10 days ago in Oklahoma, but upon further inspection, our veterinarian estimated that her leg had been in that condition for months.
It was incredibly heart breaking for our team to see her like this, especially since she came from within the slaughter pipeline. No one cared enough to help this innocent animal. Instead, people chose to try to make a profit off her. Sadly, there was nothing we could do to fix the her leg. She was given a sedative and pain medication before peacefully receiving the Last Act of Kindness. This is the reality of rescue work and why we think it is important for you to see both sides to our rescue work.
We rescue horses of all species, ages, training levels and colors. No animal is ever turned away at our Open Admission Shelter!

Her little leg was the stuff of nightmares, I can't believe she was allowed to suffer like that for who knows how long. Her original owners should be ashamed of themselves for letting an animal suffer like that in order to get a few buck and not have to "deal" with her anymore.

I'm so glad that Horse Plus was able to intercept Raisin and do the right thing, but heartbroken that it took so long for this poor little donkey to get to someone who would. It should be a crime, if it isn't already, to keep an animal in such obvious pain. I wonder if it happened before or after she was dumped into the pipeline, because I can definitely see that being the result of being crushed by a larger animal in a crowded trailer.

Dr Lydia - dont you dare apologise for tearing up over Raisin. I am bawling here. I am SO pleased you were able to just give her the last act of kindness on the spot, certainly NO point doing Xrays or further investigations on that leg before putting her to sleep. It is the ONLY thing you can do.
You would not be doing whaat you love and strive to be doing if it didnt get to you and upset you ... The day you go through a day or one animal and are numb to it and dont think about it and dont get upset - is the day you should quit.
In 2011 I had a colt who was a total dag, by my stallion, out of a lovely lovely mare, and the babies were all bouncing around the paddock as it was coming in stormy, the paddock had not long been plowed up to get rid or weeds (preferred to plow in than poison) and they had round bales in with them ... I'd been down and fed my lot in the morning, friends living with me (got the ex out of the houe and the only way I felt safer was with friends there - who just used me as a convenient place to live and pooped more than a horse with the runs full of worms.... but at the time were being good if that makes sense - well the hubby wandered off to their ponies, and came back in pretty quick and said that the colt was down - shattered broken leg. I had no choice but to call the ex to come put him down as he would go pick up the rifle and come do it. He would not do it through if my friends were on the property - what a crappy person he was. They were in the house - I'd taken the ute down to the bottom paddock and sedated the colt, and made sure he was not getting up. Near Side Forearm, half way down it, I think he had burned around a corner playing with the other kids and landed in one of the furrows in the paddock a bit wrong, twisted at the same time and taken off and it all kind of just twisted and shattered at the same time. 😞 I told the friends to just park their car in the back yard, the hubby was down with the colt with me for moral support til we saw the ex coming down the road, then he disappeared up to the house. Ex came in, Looked and tried to blame ME then the Friends for it happening..... WTH? Foals are foals, they zoom and zig and zag and sometimes step wrong. Its like us - we can step wrong on the pavement or getting out of bed and break our darn ankles, or hips or necks. I had to get tough and say just PUT HIM DOWN NOW and leave. Thankyou for coming to do that for me.
That was horrific enough and it was literally no more than 2 hours between him having been perfectly fine when I fed and checked those needed and talked to everyone (and did a check over as you do to make sure noones done anything daft overnight) and then the hubby of my friend finding him with a busted leg, and then another 20 mins til he was PTS. I didnt even let him get up. Just feeling it and picking it up sideways from the elbow and seeing it flop down from ... well, an extra 'joint' that shouldnt be there above the knee... like Raisin - no need for further investigation.
Big Hugs to you Dr Lydia, Dr Gina, and ALL - you do an amazing job there

The meanest beings on earth are humans for no other reason other than greed. I'm often ashamed to be a human when I see cruelty like this, but then I remember, we can also turn the very bad situations into something positive. Raisin found you, she found a little bit of love in her final few minutes, and for that I'm thankful, and I know Raisin is too. Keep going HPHS, you light up their stories like you wouldn't believe.

Thank you, Dr Lydia and all at HSPS, for being willing to put yourself through the vicarious trauma to give these equines decent and loving care, even for the end of life.

Thank you so much for making her a priority. I am so sorry that such callousness and ignorance exists and that y’all have to deal with it on such a regular basis. My heart goes out to you ❤

Did Raisin come in with a companion? I noticed as soon as she was off the trailer a mule with a halter on hurried to her. Maybe they had became buddies on their shared journey? God bless you all. Thank you!

I totally get how a break like this can lead to any equid not being useable at all. But dumping her rather than euthanizing her, or even just spending less than a dollar on a bullet... This is just so unacceptable. I will never understand the cruelty and selfishness of humans. Thank you for being there for her.
