  • Two fake cops with a gun try to steal my passport in Aksaray Metro, Istanbul (a busy area) close to a police substation. This is a common scam. Luckily, another youtuber told me about this scam before I flew down to Istanbul and how to prepare for it. No one told me these guys actually carry guns while pretending to be undercover police. The gun was unquestionably real, an older model variant with worn blued steel on the slide and frame. If you don't do what I did, you will be totally screwed if you get your passport stolen by these guys.

I had even worse experience just hours before. There were 4 of them and they pulled me in a car and drove me to a completely unfamilliar neighbourhood. Meanwhile taking photos of my passport.

Did they pull you into a regular unmarked car or a police car? Did this happen at night or during the day? What happened after?

As a tourist never be afraid to assert yourself and think for yourself! There is wolves in these countries that prey on naive tourists who are far too considerate of others. Saying this as an american who's lived in israel for a year and traveled through europe. Our culture's kindness is the only thing holding us back from picking out the cowardly nature of scammers, liars and cheaters.

Today my brother just had a really similar experience. My family and I travelled to Istanbul, we went to the bazar and while exiting, my brother left because he wanted to see Nuruosmaniye Mosque, as soon as we separated the moment we turn around to see him, we see 2 men trying to pull him by force, they said they were police and need to take him because he was not carrying a physical passport, as soon as we approached their attitude changed from aggressive towards my brother to nervous, my father was really upset and was screaming at them, they said they needed to see some passport and we show them a picture from our phones (funny how when my brother was alone they refused to see his phone), one of the 2 man has his hand shaking when he was holding the phone to see the picture of the passport, after that they walked away really fast.
My brother when alone tried to walk away or go to real police and they insisted they were real police, exactly as in this video, one of the two man showed super fast a really poor ID card, and the other man refused to show any ID at all! I really hope I could have take a picture of them to go to real police and warn about that scam, I’m pretty sure they wanted to take him to an alley an steal all of his belongings.
Is super shocking that these men work in plain sight and nobody was doing anything until all my family make an scandal in public.
Honestly is super scary this type of scan specially if this people can easily approach and just take you by force if you are alone in plain sight. Any recommendations on what can you do under a situation like this?
My brother screamed in public people was watching but nobody was doing nothing, he screamed “help!! I’m just a tourist!!”
    “Help!! kidnapping!!!!”

Luckily, he had family around to help him because when it happened to me in a busy area at Aksaray Metro no one wanted to get involved because when he kept shouting police i think people thought they really are the police and didn't want to get involved.
My recommendation is what the Turkish tour guide warned me to do, which is to photocopy your passport and visa and only show them a photocopy of your passport and visa and tell them you have the right only to show them your passport. Then warn other people to photocopy their passport and do the same thing.
He could try learning the Turkish language because most don't speak English there, but I can't even pronounce "kaçırılıyorum" for kidnapping.

Scary. 😑 but finally what you did for leave? Give them Copy of you're ID?

    • @david1george
      @david1george  Год назад +1

Yes, I gave him a photocopy of my passport and visa. He looked it over, gave it back, and left. If I showed him my real passport, he would have confiscated it and sold it on the black market as there is a huge black market for stolen passports. I knew he was a fake cop, but when his friend showed his gun I gave him the photocopy. This was in a busy area at night too btw. Always be prepared.

@David George that's why it's good you to show this case and what to do. Thanks. I've been many times in that área, I think it's aksaray, and feeling save thinking there's a police station outside the aksaray metro. 🤔 I see it can be in anyplace. 🫣

Use common sense ppl and be considerate of the host nations feelings, Turkey just had an earthquake with a huge number of deaths so there is a feeling of resentment toward foreigners of course in any country thats suffering while tourists are chilling, if point is if a country is suffering keep away until it blows over.

you should deffinetly let the police near you know as soon as you can. they can access cameras nearby or at the scene and find out who they are, you should really be carefull. I'm sorry this has happenned to you, my country is being corrupt and failing to protect its tourists. please be safe. you can always tell them to take you to police station and figure it out there. since they are scammers, they more likely to run away, shout as loud as you can and walk away. Sadly, i bet you they are not even turkish citizen, probably some refrugee unregistered alien gang group that my corrupt president just lets them roam around the country and do their illegal actions.

It got real scary once the second guy showed up making heavy pointing movements at his handgun like he was going to use it on me. It's like George Floyd. There were a lot of people in that area, but if they think it's the police they're not going to stop it. I don't think they were Turkish citizens either.

Istanbul has over 15 million people. it's the largest city in Europe and crime is inevitable just like walking in any large North American city like New York City or LA at night. As long as you're prepared for how to deal with the risks, you can still make a decent vacation out of it.

What's the alternative at this price point if you're looking for a budget vacation? I heard Thailand is just as bad with corruption. I wouldn't mind exploring Pattaya, but when I look it up the flights from Air Canada cost almost twice as much. My round trip ticket with layovers from Toronto was just under $1,000US. My hotel room with it's own shower and toilet was around $21US a night through booking.com. You can even get a hostel bed for $5 a night. I spent under $4US a day on food. Public transportation was almost half a buck and it's very clean. Factor in the dental implant and it was like getting the vacation for free.

No thanks, I'm not going to get shot over a photographed piece of paper. I've been to the range before. I can tell the difference between an airsoft and real gun. That was real. It was an older model with a steel slide that had worn bluing on it. It could have been deactivated, but definitely looked real. His ID card was totally fake though.
