This has always been my dream. Writing my songs and discovering that some of them might be perfect for certain situations in a movie or TV show. On the other hand, if someone hires me to write for something specific, I'd be happy too. But if I'm hired because that person thinks my style is the right fit.

I think that is a perfect approach, Howie.

I had a co-writer in my studio last night. For the first time in ages we just wrote the song in the room. We both had a blast. Is it a hit song? Nah. But it's a good song and who knows where it could go. Thanks for the edification Chris. I appreciate it!

You never know where your "not a hit song" might end up. If you had a blast writing it, there is a very good chance listeners will have a blast listening to it. That is all you need to succeed in sync licensing.

Man trying to get my tunes in the right hands is like hoping the music supervisors find my needle song in a hay stack.. You can do all the research and use tune find and find out the exact music supervisor but there is no way to force him to hear my track..

I've been having a dilemma with this, as I write music from the heart and want to do sync licensing but have felt worried about whether I could compromise what I write. It was a relief to find this. However, all of my tracks so far are normal length (and some are longer), so I'm not sure how that fits in with sync, though I know that you can make alternative versions. I wonder if you could give me some idea if a full length song would be acceptable?

Your track can be any length really. They almost never use the whole thing unless it's an end credit. Normally they will edit the parts they want so don't worry about how long it is.

"The Great Rock and Roll Swindle". That movie is the rule book for success in the biz according to the empresario himself. Anyhoo, dude, I have 9 albums of music. How do I shop them? They are not just going to come to me (for placements)...unless I ??? I'm BMI and have had a few TV placements over the last few years. Would like to know how to get more. Thanks. Nice view!!!

Yes you have to take the first step so they know you are there, but if you have good music, they will come to you. That's whether it's a licensing agent, high end library, or music supervisor. I help put songwriters' music in front of the right people, so just sign up to my Sync Songwriter community and we can get the ball rolling.
