I looooooooooove Chungking Express so much 💕 At first I thought it was just an another artsy movie but I was wrong, it was special though the plot was simple, the narrative and the way it was told was so beautiful
yeaaah but in order to be more open to films like Chunking Express take the word 'Artsy' out of your vocabulary, I feel like it's a term that is used disparingly by people who don't actually understand or appreciate art and real freedom of expression.
I am really happy to have found this essay, since i have searched for an analysis of wong kar wai's use of the step-printing technique. Keep up the good work!
Now that I think about it, it's kind of hard to articulate! They both feel kind of loosely presented as if you feel like you're in the moment with them. There's no feeling that certain scenes have to serve some sort of direct function to the plot like a traditional film but instead you're just with them in a moment of time, as the world passes them by. There's a bittersweet nostalgic feeling yet there's a sense of isolation in the characters. I've only seen both films once semi-recently so that was my raw reaction. It could very well change on my second watch!
Sofia Coppola really inspired her movie from those of WKW, she even said it in public when receiving awards. And even in her other movies, we can clearly see the influence of WKW, like in The Bling Ring.
Other great examples of movies that use this effect are: Reservoir Dogs Gladiator Pulp Fiction Moulin Rouge Leaving Las Vegas The Illusionist As Good As It Gets Rocky Unbreakable The Silence of the Lambs Schindler’s List Saving Private Ryan JFK Wolf of Wall Street Three Kings The Piano Holes The Fugitive The Green Mile Crash Slumdog Millionaire The Empire Strikes Back Ransom Rear Window Snatch
Nice video but definitely disagree with "On the surface the film looks nothing special" completely disagree with that xD The entire look of this movie is alluring
Wong kar wai is a genius

ripped off from a Tarantino interview...verbatim
I would never get tired of Wong Kar Wai films, Fallen Angels, In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Happy Together are my favorites
Great video! I just saw the film and I can't help but feel how Lost in Translation is similar to Chungking Express. It gives off the same vibes.
Musobloke Could you elaborate more? I'm a fan of both movies.

lost in translation is shit compared to chungking express
Sofia Coppola said that a huge inspiration for Lost in Translation was In the Mood for Love, which is also by Wong Kar Wai.
I love that there is a video on this!! ❤
This channel is so professional and helpful :P thanks!
The story is also about 2 women, a gangster and a dreamer...not just focused on men!
Both somewhat obsessed with western culture. One with music and one dresses up as one.
I loved Chungking Express ❤️
Great analyzation great video!
My favourite film of all time.
That was marvellous!!!!
fantastic video , love wong
I absolutely love chungking express and fallen angels.
Amazing
so basically every moody music video today is inspired by Wang Kar Wai.
I wanted to be a Kubrick, Villenueve, Tarantino, and Nolan until I knew Kar-wai.
Who know what is the camera setting number on that running part ? For example , the Fps , and iso and something else
I would say either 8 or 12 fps. you could play around with the shutterangle, so 180 or longer, like 220.
Where are you these days. Hope all is well. Do you have another RUclips Channel.
Are you going to upload more video essays?
The style.

Isn't the step printing process as simple as slowing the film's shutter speed down???
Does anyone know where the clip of Wong Kar Wai talking about step printing is from?
No, and hello.
his interview with maryin scorsesr
A great part of its appeal has to do with Christopher Doyle's cinemarography.
Yess
❤️
nice video, i like the essay but not the question at the end... "so dont you think that..." i felt it like a self-help thing...
nice ripoff of Tarantino's take on the film...the is exactly the same with the same footage. Think for yourself
Except Wong did it first in 1989 with As Tears Go By, 3 years before Reservoir Dogs.
@@kureki147 my comment was about Tarantino’s commentary on the film
This is a terrible video. Full of broad sweeping statements and generally stating the obvious.
shut up. i'm listening.
