It seems to me that Tarantino's form of high praise for Faye was calling her the most popular "rockstar" of her time, the "Madonna of Mandarin." These remain to be pop culture high praises even to today's standards.

I remember back when the Rolling Thunder video release of Chungking Express dropped from Tarantino. I was just out of high school and working in a video store. I never understood why he didn't follow it up with Fallen Angels. Would have been a nice one-two punch. I've been a WKW fan forever, and Fallen Angels is my favorite film of his to this day.

The shots of the safehouse are enigmatic. Beautiful smoking scenes, connection in loneliness as a theme, but overall great acting and cinematography really make everything in the movie such a classic.
i totally agree - i just watched both movies back to back for the first time and i was honestly so much more immersed into fallen angels. i found the way that the 2 plots intertwined throughout the film, and met at the end, was fascinating

Very informed and interesting review that made me like him way more as a person (and both see and respect him as a knowledgeable talking head in cinema) than watching any of his movies ever has. He's a genius, his back catalogue of things he's been involved in speaks for itself.
Christopher Doyle deserves a lot of credit for the romantic, mysterious, neon Honk Kong charm of this film (and many other Kar-wai Wong films).
