His relationship with James Arness started as a friendly partnership. He worked to get him a role on Gunsmoke that lasted for 20 years. That’s why he felt so abandoned when James didn’t show up to help him work on his passion project, a massive and expensive film about the Alamo. He never forgave him for the slight.
John always supported his other friend, director John Ford, who had a volatile temper and controlling nature. Clark Gable wouldn’t stand for it while they were filming Mogambo. The Duke took the side of his friend and badmouthed Clark.
John Wayne may not have even always known why he e hated other actors. His daughter isn’t sure why he and Gene Hackman didn’t get along on the set of Fort Apache and why he always criticized his performances.
John’s feud with fellow Western star Clint Eastwood has a clearer explanation. They had opposite opinions on how their characters should act, and it kept them apart forever. John’s relationship with Frank Sinatra was a bit more unexpected and complicated. They had opposing political views, and he started monitoring the crooner for possible Communist leanings.
There was an awkward benefit where they nearly got into a fight. There was also the time they stayed in the same Vegas hotel and Frank had a party that was a bit too loud for John. What made their relationship unique was that they were eventually able to repair it. They saw each other from time to time in their final years and always said that there was never any animosity.

Gene Hackman never was in a movie with John Wayne,The movie Fort Apache Henry Fonda and John Wayne starred in it
more lies by these people who make these kinds of vids. Glad you picked that up too Tracy!
I remembered seeing the movie, and couldn't remember him in it. But I didn't recognize Festus (Ken Curtis) in Rio Grande singing Down by the Glenside.
Gene Hackman's first film was "Mad Dog Coll" in 1961. In 1948 He may have finished High School.
Uh, Gene Hackman wasn't born until 1930. Fort Apache was released in 1948, when Hackman was still in high school. Hackman didn't appear in any films until 1961, 13 years after Fort Apache was released. From all I can tell, Wayne and Hackman never worked together. Wayne was on the record as being critical of Hackman's acting.
Exactly what I thought and researched as well. Puts the credibility of the entire video in doubt in my opinion.
Considering Hackmans success l don't suppose he's to worried about what John Wayne thought of him...
Hackman never worked with Wayne.
Done with this channel, did he mean Henry Fonda?
Wayne's acting wasn't anything to
Rave about he had no stage experience just used his patriotism
To get by!
I met John Wayne in the Hardware Store, Dooley's Hardware Mart around 1966. he is said to my Grandfather the time, "who's this little feller," where upon my Grandfather told him and they proceeded to, " jaw up a storm." He seemed like a likeable elderly man and I watched his movies until he passed away 11 June 1979.
Cameron
That's a great story! My Mom used to work for him and he was actually a really nice down to earth guy
Elderly who John Wayne , he was only in his 50's ?
Yep, his passing was one of the saddest days of my life. God bless John Wayne!
@@crystalr7602 God killed Old One 🫁 Lung
Hellaof a story young fella. " jaw up a storm." is a great quote. I think the Jury will always be out on why the Duke never signed up to fight in a real war, but only on film. See the scene in 'Trumbo'. Where the Duke is confonted as to why he never participated actively in WW2. Struck a nerve.....
My father was a great John Wayne fan!! And it rubbed of on me !! We must have watche 50 John Wayne Movies in the last three months just before he passed away from COVID related complications !!! My favorite was Rio Bravo !!
You wish their were more people like mr Wayne especially in that cesspool of Hollywood.
More racist and bigots he made it very clear that he didn't care for anyone that was of brown skin and he wanted to hit the native american woman that accepted the oscar for Marlin Brando. John Wayne was a cesspool all on his own...geez.
Have U even ever been to Hollywood?

Our good friends in Corporate. They çare deeply about us all. Well, at least our wallets anyway.
I’ve feel in love with the young John Wayne I watched on our first TV when I was 4 years old. I creep downstairs, turn the TV on & watch the test pattern until he appeared in one of his 1930’s westerns, jumping on his horse & riding like the wind, fighting the bad guys, or stopping a runaway wagon.Good always won & he’d be standing by his horse with a big grin. Saw lots of his movies on Saturday afternoons’ double feature at the theater for a quarter. So many favorites: Angel & The Badman, Wake of The Red Witch,The Quiet Man, The Searchers, The High & The Mighty, & Shepherd if The Hills!!! He will always be my heroic, all man, true American!🙏🏼💕🇺🇸
In junior high, my best friends dad took us to P Town and watched Rio Lobo it was a good flick
At a very young age I remember his voice first, and asked someone who he was. At that age nobody else ever got my attention like the Duke.
Is there another Gene Hackman that we haven’t heard of or scene in movies? Ft Apache is one of my favorite movies of John Wayne and I have never seen Hackman in any scene or listed in the credits.
True story,Wayne used to go to a bar up the street from where he lived in Newport Beach California called:Goat Hill tavern.
1 night after drinking boiler makers he slid his beer mug down the old school bar knocking over a few drinks.Wayne than said if anyone has a problem with that we can step out back...no one was drunk enough to take him up on that generous offer.
I used to go to Henry's Goat Hill Tavern in Newport Beach in the 80s. Still a bit of a dive and it's still there
Yes I'm a diehard Duke fan.
None of us are perfect. We all have our flaws.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
One of my favorite Wayne movies was *"Tall In The Saddle"!*
His character, a man named "Rocklin", was trying to find a murderer.
The best scene IMO was when, after an almost gun fight, Rocklin hits another man with his gun, and tells an older lady, *"Yes ma'am, just as hard as I can!"*
The Shootist is mine.
Gene Hackman WAS NOT in Fort Apache. He would have been 18 at the time, and hadn't become an actor then.
I have seen most, if not all, of John Wayne's films many times. One thing stands out to me about his acting. John Wayne always played John Wayne and he was always Good. This is not a criticism, but MY observation. He played the roles that fit him.
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing your views on this. Be safe and have a great week ❣
I am a fan of John Wayne, and agree he always played John Wayne. I am also a (semi-pro) actor and I can tell you he was not a great actor, but always a great John Wayne. BUT... if you believe he was always good, check out 'The Conqueror' where he was cast as Genghis Kahn. Never was anyone more miscast. As a side note, that movie was shot in the desert very near where the government was testing 'Atomic Bombs' and a majority of the cast and crew died of cancer... including Wayne.
The Duke Back handing Sinatra’s bodyguard is pretty ballsy.
??
I don't think it happened.
I used too see him around Newport -balboa ca.when I was a kid.he always gave me that hey you smile when I saw him
I loved Duke! Always will.
You're a true fan! In your opinion, what is his finest film?
The Gene Hackman stuff is pure guff.
Agree. This video loses a lot of credibility!
Erm, I don't know what movie you're showing during the Gene Hackman part, but "Fort Apache" is a black & white film that debuted 13 years before Gene Hackman's first (uncredited role) in a film called "Mad Dog Coll". I can't find any film in which they co-starred.
Caught that also. Probably meant Henry Fonda.

Justin, that is a complete lie. John Wayne made war time movies in support of our soldiers/country. He was a Patriot. Stop listening to the liberal BS scum who want to destroy everything John Wayne was & stood for.
TOTALLY a John Wayne fan. To me, he was the epitomy of being American and much of what you stated in this video confirms my point. Anyone who wants to speak badly of the Duke, I'll forget I'm a lady and go over and iron their face pilgrim!
The Founders were Liberals, not "conservatives," which is why we have the First Amendment, which protects freedom of conscience, belief, and speech. There is nothing more un-American than siding with gov't to prohibit views of which one disapproves.
John Wayne was not only a jerk but also a right-wing gung-ho pro-war extremist and draft dodger.

Newsflash! We are all flawed
Everybody has personality clashes with people. My own brother hates my guts so what’s new. I am sure all of Hollywood actors at one time or another have had disagreements with one another. It’s the kissing scenes that get me. How can they be so passionate when they kiss when they hate each other? That’s great acting!

Thanks for clearing that up. I think most of these vids that talk about our great actors are deep state related and attempt to make them look like they're terrible people when they're not. Half of what was said on this video was BS about Wayne.
Don't be the all caps guy, smh
There were a lot of untruths in this video. John Wayne was married at different times to two Mexican women. Gene Hackman was not in Fort Apache. John Ford was Wayne's friend, but Ford was a liberal. So much for facts verse. He obviously does not like Wayne.

John Ford had a lot guts, doing what he did in WWII.
John Wayne was bigger than life actor. Loved his movies.

Been a devoted fan of John Wayne s ince I was 10 years old, because of his great Films, his honestly and loyalty to America never missed a film, seen everyone of his movies at 15 least times! Great man, great actor!
You're a true fan of John Wayne. Thank you so much for sharing your life story. In your opinion, what is his finest film?
Where do you get his "loyalty to America" from?
He was against everything America stood for......like free speech, freedom of association etc, free speech was only for those that he agreed with, his political views were to the Right of Donald Trump and Attilla The Hun,
You're a fan of the people he played on screen all of which would have been Democrats and he was always against the Capitalist who wanted to own everything, in real life he was 180 degrees away from what he portrayed on screen...and that is the truth, he ruined many Hollywood careers just because he didn't agree with them politically...is that the America that you know?
I love John Wayne movies but John Wayne himself, not so much because I can tell the difference between fact and fantasy
It's funny how in every movie the Hero is a Socialist and the villain is always a Capitalist and we can all see that...but in reality most are blind, We make the Villain into a Hero, I wonder why?
Just an example
Superman, a HERO always helps the poor and helpless, money and political power meant nothing to him...Socialist
Lex Luther VILLAIN always helps himself.....Money and Political power was all hew ever thought about....a Capitalist
Robin Hood....HERO definitely a Socialist
Sheriff Of Nottingham....Villain and definitely a Capitalist
Gandhi, MLK, Mandela, all socialists
Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Mogabe, Idi Amin, John Wayne.....all Capitalists
Whether in real life or Fantasy the hero is always a socialist because no one would even believe a fantasy if they tried to say Gordon Gekko was a Hero, would they?
Again, I love most John Wayne movies and I am a fan because he made great movies...
Americans voted for Reagan because they thought they were voting for Bonzo....but that's another story🤣🤣🤣
I grew up watching John Wayne movies on daytime tv in the 70's.
The pictures mostly bled together as he was usually the same basic character in every film ...yet I wouldn't change a single frame.

THE ONE AND ONLY
Love John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies. Have to disagree with The Duke on High Plains Drifter though it’s a Great movie.
No one called him John. He was always "Duke."
Wayne and Hackman never acted together in anything. Most likely, the reference to Fort Apache is about Henry Fonda, a noted Hollywood liberal and Wayne, whose politics were to the right of Genghis Khan.
Fonda and the Duke were very close friends
@@wadetaylor1299 Could be. Then I don't know what the erroneous reference is; other than Wayne hated a lot of other actors if they were liberals, but that seems to be a later thing, not something like 1949's Fort Apache.
Remember UNFORGIVEN
I believe Gene Hackman was still a marine at that time, while Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry made a Hit in the movie houses , the lead role was meant for John Wayne but he turned it down. At the same time his western movie flopped.
Over the years, I've "heard" over and over that Duke was supposedly a rabid anti Native American racist.. well..er, uh, I first met him in a noted fishing resort off the coast of North America. He was there on his ship with a number of his 'crew'/inner circle :) and when he looked me in the eye and shook my hand, I immediately found him to be one of the most genuinely forthright and honest men I'd ever encountered. A warm and unpretentious "big guy" he was just plain fun to be around. Now let me tell you a secret...despite ALL the professional firearms stuntmen/armorers that his daughter Aissa had been around for all those years while growing up and appearing in so many of his movies; as well as many accomplished shooters and trainer actors, like Glen Ford etc., it was I who ended up being the one who actually taught her to shoot (she turned out to have some considerable talent, no doubt bolstered by her general fearlessness). My point? I'm a goodly part Cherokee/ Comanche.
Wayne and Eastwood best. Their personal lives are like every one else. None perfect. Alway found it funny thar Wayne didn't get High Plains Drifter

One of the GREATEST actors ever...and a real AMERICAN....and AMERICAN values!!!
Not true..IMO…
I don’t remember Gene Hackman being in “Fort Apache “
This was an excellent production as well. Yes, John Wayne is one of my most favorite I picked that up from my father who was born in 1937 and when my father was about 8 years old he saw She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and was determined to become an army officer which he eventually did. He and I used to watch John Wayne films together when I was a kid as an adult I collected them and while initially I had them on VHS tapes, I replace them all the DVDs and Blu-ray collections. I'm not aware of any movies that he made that I do not have. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon of courses still one of my favorite along with Fort Apache and all of the movies with Maureen O'Hara they were great friends until the day he died I remember what I was doing when he passed away and I had heard it on the news. He still represents the kind of character that every American should have but almost no one does anymore and it's resulting in a very sick Society right now. Personally I'm looking forward for the hard reset which is most definitely coming. I will be ready for it and all the people that I associate. The hope is to rebuild our constitutional republic and restore our nation to a traditional and conventional judeo-christian morality. John Wayne would approve!

3:03 is Kiel Martin, he portrayed J.D. La Rue in Hill Street Blues
James Stewart was not married and had no children when he enlisted in the Military. Clark Gable was not married and had no children when he enlisted. John Wayne had a wife and four children.
Also, Republic pictures requested a deferment for John Wayne as allowing him to break contract and cancel his future schedule of pictures would've meant putting many Republic employees out of work.
The US Government granted that deferment.
I’ve heard all kinds of stories of John Wayne‘s excuse for not being in the military. He could’ve joined anytime he wanted his friend, John Ford was a captain in the navy reserves, and a lot of people had kids the were drafted into the military at the time. He uses Hollywood connections to get out of the military. It’s just that simple. I think what really gets people ticked off about him, especially during the Vietnam war era. He was all for going to war and making money off of them in his movies.and making his self out as being a super patriot. But never wanted to participate in any of those wars, but his interview in playboy magazine show who he truly was. But his opinions were commenting on minorities in that era. Walter Brennan and Ward Bond and the rest of his friends were all extreme racist and all members of the John Birch Society. Walter Brennan cheered on the movie set when he heard Bobby Kennedy was shot and did the same with Martin Luther King Jr.
John didn't like anything dark and negative in his movies without right prevailing
