Question: Why not offer some SharedPreferences auto-loading when starting the app, so that when we reach code that handles it, it will always be safe even on the UI thread? You could let app developers to choose which files to auto-load if needed. Maybe auto-load them up to some total size for apps that haven't changed to handle it yet. Before you suggest Datastore , Datastore isn't a 100% alternative to it, as it's not available for Preference in settings screens.
