My dad bought mom's sewing machine in about 1950. Was in the store when they bought it and the store had a Featherweight. I wanted it big time. Finally, my dad told me in no uncertain terms that it was not a toy and I could not have it. Was not happy, but the law had been laid down. In about '76 was at a garage sale and there was a feather weight for $35. Bought it on the spot. Came with book, zigzag attachment, button hole attachment and all regular attachments. Looks like new. Won't part with it despite having a Bernina and a two year old modern Janome in a wonderful sewing desk. The Featherweight is my treasure.

I still have the original Singer Featherweight sewing machine that my husband and I bought for me in early 1953. Plus the card table that you could use to hold it. I had just found out we were going to have a baby and I wanted a sewing machine to not only make clothes for me but for my baby. I recall it cost something like $99. It was a hard decision to spend that amount of money but he did. And I can promise all that sewing machine paid for itself many many more times that the original price. We had 3 little girls and I made all their school clothes (back in the day when girls wore cotton dresses to school) plus took tailoring courses and learned how to make a wool suit - lined and bound buttonholes. I can't tell you how many Easter mornings I was sitting up putting in hems or sewing on buttons to finish up my girls new Easter dresses. So here some 69 years later I pull it out occasionally and do some mending or whatever. One of the best things we ever bought.

My grandmother had a singer sewing machine in the cabinet with the foot pedal. She made so many quilts for everyone in our family who wanted one. She took scraps of material and cut them into small pieces and made her quilts. When my daughter was born she made her a quilt, she cut out little animals and made her the quilt, my daughter still has it, she will be 51 next month. My mother would make dresses for me and my sister, when I was a young teenager I had an afternoon job thru the Neighborhood Youth Program. When I got paid she would take me to the store to pick out fabric and a pattern and that’s how I got my dresses for school. Back then girls could not wear pants to school we had to wear dresses until my Senior year back in 1972. My grandma’s sewing machine is still in the family, one of my cousins wanted it so my mom gave it to him. So many memories you made me remember, thank you Granny Pat. Love that new red top with your gold glasses.🥰

My grandmother had a 1887 treadle she bought used, my grandfather refurbished it. My aunt who is now 87, had made my two brothers some shirts on that machine when they were 5, they were twins and passed away a few years ago, so the machine is extra special to me. I haven't had it but two years and still waiting to use it. I am new to your channel and will be subscribing. I love to sew and recently learned to make quilts. I am 60 now, and enjoy hearing about the days gone by.

That was 1981 and he has gone to heaven. I found his pj bottoms he was so proud of and he just wore them out. Sewing makes special memories also. ❤

OMG! A Singer Featherweight….my Mother sewed all the clothings for us five kids and some of her clothes and all the curtains and decor items for our modest home. Yep I had some sweet dresses made out of seed sacks. Also at this time the cotton store fabric came in 36” widths. She worked wonders. My oldest sister really could sew as well as Mom. She made a lined business suit when she graduated high school.
Anyway…like you Mother finally got her dream cabinet machine that did the magic zigzag sheet. Unfortunately she traded her little Featherweight in on that new machine. She continued sewing all her life…and she said she never had as good a sewing machine as that featherweight. She always regretted getting rid of her little Singer.
Her’s came with a sweet little suitcase that just fit perfectly with that hinged flange folded up.
I loved using that little machine as well.
Today I have an adequate portable White 25:02 sewing machine…But never was as good or as simple to use as that old loved Featherweight.
Thank you for giving me a sweet memory of my Mother and all those great items she made all those years ago. I was born in 1940 and Mom had that machine as far back as I can remember.💕💕💕💕💕

I have enjoyed reading all the comments here! Such wonderful memories from folks!
My mom had her mothers Singer with the pump foot pedal that we kids loved to push on under the desk while she was sewing! She taught me how to sew. Mom was a wonderful seamstress and even worked at one time in a garment factory. She made our clothes and any specialty clothing for special events. She made satin lined suit jackets, pants and such. A perfectionist, folks thought she bought the clothes. Her things were better than store bought. Towards the end she loved making quilts and yearly went to the Paducah KY quilt show. That show was incredible! The spare bedroom had a utility rack filled with yards and yards of material, all color hues. She was an artist..in oil painting, cooking and was a concert pianist, 1st chair violinist and singer. So seeing your beautiful quilt brought those wonderful memories back! My dad retired from Caterpillar in the 80’s and as a part time job, he started his own sewing machine repair shop which was very popular with all the seamstresses around.. He knew how to fix and tune up all machines! He’s almost 96 now and when mom passed away, he closed shop a few years back.
Well Ive rambled on enough. God bless you Granny and all the lovely people here!🌷Cheri from IL

A year out of college, one year of teaching, one summer teaching summer school, and I bought my first new sewing machine! That was 58 years ago and the year I bought my first brand new Singer sewing machine! It was called a Touch and Sew! I made all my clothes on it for years! After that, I made things for my daughter. I also got into making rag dolls and clothing for friends for a few years after I retired. All for free, of course. My daughter was grown and married at that time and I know she didn’t want one of those, as she has sons. However, I made them for all my friends who did want one. I’m like you, I’ve not sewed for several years. However, I still treasure my sewing machine!

    And Wore it to Church
I didn't sew the Seams Right
    the Zipper was crooked
The material Mama let me pick out was Big Orange and Yellow flowers..😮
Well at Church the dress started Coming apart at the seams
I was lucky it didn't fall completely apart
But That was the Last time I tried Making Anything!
Mama made our clothes a lot of times and made us all a Quilt.

It was good hearing your Story

Growing up it was my Oldest Sister who would make my school dresses. I wish I still had them today. I learned to sew in 4H club. We all made a basic skirt with elastic waistband and entered them in the county fair. We were so proud of our garments. The year was 1969, i was going on 10 years of age. I continued to sew, I made a crib quilt with matching curtains and quilted wall hanging pictures for my 1st baby’s nursery in 1981 and every year I would sew halloween costumes for my little boys. I never had a Singer, I had a Sears Kenmore. Great memories ❤

It is built like a tank. I still have the machine. It still works although I haven’t used it in a while. I took a tailoring course 50 years ago. I’ve made trousers. The zipper in pair of trousers is not the easiest thing to do but I, eventually, got it right. I started making drapes, curtains with French pleats and valances. I don’t sew anymore. She also has a Janome that I bought her. She quilts a lot. She has a best friend with a long arm quilter. I made 3 quilts and now I am working on a yo yo quilt. I just like to have something to do with my hands during cold weather when all we can do is sit. The yard work wears me out in the summer. I’m 75 and don’t get around good anymore. I have ruptured disks in my back and can only walk so much. Since kov*d we hardly leave the house when it is everywhere. She visits her sewing friend and I go to the Antique Mall about once a month. Love your top! I love to quilt and was able to find a Featherweight online at Goodwill. I had a lady tell us that they get them quite often and auction them so I went a browsing just before Thanksgiving a few years back. I made a bid on one not ever dreaming I would ever win a bid. I saw a few that ended up over $600, but I put in my max bid any how. Well, we went camping with friends for Thanksgiving out of town and as I was waking up the day after I remembered I had put in that bid and so I went to check my email…….Lo and behold I had an email telling me I had won the auction and I screamed with joy. My husband thought I had lost my mind or something dreadful was in my sleeping bag I think as I screeched!! 😂
My max bid was for $225, so I got a deal for sure and even more so now that you told us you paid $150 for yours brand new.
I just love my machine and I found out that the day mine was made was in April 1948. I say it was a gift and blessing from God and my oldest Brother that had just passed a few weeks before. My Brothers was also born in 1948. I think of him every time I sew with it and thank God for blessing me with the machine.
I have always wanted to sew since I was little. My Mom didn’t care to sew, but both my Granny’s could make anything. I was very fortunate to have both my Great Grandmothers until I was almost 15 years old. I use to love listening to their stories and sure wish I would have asked more questions back then, but you don’t really think of those things at that age.I also wish I could have learned to sew from them. I was passed on their machines though and sure treasure them. Your daughter will always treasure yours too!
I love listening to your stories also. You sure make me think of my Granny’s and the memories of my childhood and how fortunate that I grew up during those times when family was closer nit and not scattered as it is today. Thank you for sharing your stories!

Ms Pat, You have a real treasure. Shines like new in spite of it's age. I have a feather weight in the case, but I used mostly my 401A Singer, bought in the early 60's. The 401A is an excellent machine also and I was told by a repairman that it was the last all metal machine made by Singer. I learned to sew on a Singer treadle machine. I had the pleasure of teaching two granddaughters and a grandson to sew. My daughter did not care to sew. I machine peiced many quilt tops and hand quilted a few of them. At 88, I have picked up hand quilting again and just finished a small quilt that needed to be finished.
Mother made all the dresses for my two sisters and I. Many of them were from feedsacks. Chicken feed came in the cotton printed bags and I think you needed three matching sacks for a dress. Did your Mamma sew feedsacks for your dresses? Mother would have us look in the Sears or Montgomery Ward catalog and pick out a design we liked and she would cut out a pattern from newspaper.
    Very interesting progam......keep them coming!!!

Once, I was at a museum myself and something drew me to the eyes of a woman in the painting and upon closer look to I actually could see a reflection in the eyes of the woman that was itself in amazing detail. Such skill the artist had. If I tried to do a paint by number project even it would look horrible.

You are truly a wealth of information and knowledge to listen to. Both my Mother & Mother in law used to do sewing many years ago and I wish I could hear their story. Thank you for telling your sewing stories and sharing your wonderful experiences, it brings me to think of the experiences those two ladies in my life once had. I’m the only one who sews on both sides of the family and a granddaughter who doesn’t sew got a trundle sewing machine to display at her house. It would be nice to see on it but it wasn’t given to me. I’ve been sewing for over 40 years and hope to one day get a feather weight, hopefully with a wonderful story behind it;)

Your Featherweight sewing machine is a wonderful treasure. My grandmother had one and made many beautiful clothes for me when I was little. When I was in elementary school little girls only wore dresses. The Featherweight machines are much sought after now. You can even buy ones that have been painted custom vintage shades like pink and light teal with hand painted flowers on them. All the women in my family were wonderful seamstresses but unfortunately it stopped when it got to me. I am now 62 and that is a regret of mine for never learning to sew. I do hand needlework to keep busy. Thank you for the very interesting video. I love to hear from you no matter what you talk about. Take care.

Oh my I had the singer 2000 also. It was my dream machine. I had less expensive machines through the years. I sewed many clothes for my daughter's. I,love it I'm going to sew a baby doll for myself. Just to challenge myself. I want to make a wardrobe for the baby doll. I just wanted to keep up my skills. It keeps my mind fresh. Thanks for, this wonderful time.

Love your featherweight! I didn't learn sewing or cooking in home economics. Mama sat me down at her machine when I was expecting my first child. Maternity clothes were expensive. She knew ways around that. Zippers made her a nervous wreck so I skipped those. Ended up with 5 pretty outfits and they were repeated next time until I got so big (twins) that nothing fit! You have so much creativity! In fine arts and language arts along with culinary skills. I tried the roasted vegetables and they were delicious! You were right, sweet potatoes added so much! Bless you for sharing your life with us.

I enjoyed this video very much. My mother knew how to sew, but not as good as she would have liked to be. She made me a dress once, when I was in jr high school. An a-frame dress. She did a good job, but couldn't make anything fancier than that. I'm sure she did a lot more sewing when I was younger than that. She never mentioned how much sewing she did. There were 5 of us kids, so she had to be sewing more. Anyway, she had one of those sewing machines inside a table. You would lift up the top and the sewing machine would come up to the top from the inside. And it had a foot pedal. When my mother passed, my sister and I divided her jewelry up between us and I've been meaning to make something out of them to give to my sister and other female relatives. I haven't done it yet. Your "pot of flowers" out of jewelry is beautiful! Now I DO like hearts, and I was thinking of possibly making one for myself with her jewelry. I need to do that. You are giving me some incentive to do that now. Lynn in AZ

I sewed a lot of my own clothes, my mom’s and made shirts for my brother. I haven’t sewn clothes in quite awhile but have sewn kitchen chair cushions, pillows and curtains. Fabric is more expensive nowadays and it’s pretty much cheaper to just buy clothes already made. Your jewelry shadow box picture is BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for another wonderful video ❤

I have restored more Featherweights than I can count for others and every single one has a special story, it’s one of the reasons I love them so much. Hello Granny Pat,, my first time here, new subscriber. Loved your chat and found all of the topics interesting. My Mom had a little singer machine, she made all of our dresses, I have2 older sisters, so the clothes got passed down. My Grandmother and aunt worked in a textile mill, so cloth was available and either free or very inexpensive. MyMom, went on to start her own sewing business, however, she made lined drapes and slipcovers. She was totally self taught, and well known in our small New England town. She did sell her original singer machine for an industrial heavy machine, and she said on many occasions she wished she’d have kept her little singer. My Mom sadly passed years ago, she would have been very close to your age.
I enjoyed your chat today in so many ways, thank you. Mom had a love of pretty dishes and although Mom was a blue and white dish lover, funny I prefer, the pink dishes, and when you told us to sit tight and look at your dishes , I said I have been admiring your dishes, throughout the video. I had never heard of the shadow boxes, from the old jewelry, and found that interesting as well. Your flower basket quilt is beautiful!❤I make jewelry, sew, and do crafts. I have a singer 99k, I wanted a feather weight but they re very desirable these days, and expensive. So I am happy with my 99k, and I have a singer 6106, my $10.00 thrift store find, and that does a zigzag and a few other stitches, enough for me. They just don’t make things the way they use to! Anyway so glad I found you. Thank you, Shirley❤

Oh my Pat❤ I love my little featherweight Singer. always keep it safe and in the little black case. One of my stories. I do not quilt or sew. I was in Houston in the 1990s and happened to go to the George Brown Convention Center. They were having a quilt show. I got to meet Anne Bancroft sitting in front of a famous quit. Later I learned she was in a movie about quilts that year. It was 1995.

I had my grandmothers treadle singer, sewing machine in a wooden case. It folded down into the case, wooden arm folded over top look like a piece of furniture. You pull the wooden piece up, lifted the sewing machine out and it would sit on top. I made my two girls rompers with fancy yolked tops attached. After we moved to Indiana, I still had the sewing machine in the garage for many years got rid of the sewing machine and then after many years discarded the case I just saw an antique roadshow together they’re worth over $500. It was looking pretty bad being left out in the garage. I had nowhere to put it. My grandmother seamstress at a factory in the early 1900s founder 1900 census listed occupation, seamstress. Your machine looks brand new. I jammed many a bobbin on that treadle😁 my sister-in-law made lots of decoupage pictures 35 years ago. very popular .Nancy, Indiana

Hello Granny Pat! So enjoyed your talk today about your Featherweight machine. In my town in Pennsylvania there is a quilting shop that has classes on how to sew using a Featherweight (and it’s foot attachments) and also how to maintain a Featherweight machine…imagine that?! This shop also sells Featherweight machines that the store owner has refurbished back to working order! Seems like those machines are work horses and beloved by their owners! THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS VIDEO! I accidentally came across featherweight sewing machines a couple of years ago I think on RUclips and how sought after they were! So I started searching for one and actually found a black one about 30 minutes away and then antique shop here in Maryland. Then I learned about the tan ones and white ones and started searching for them as well. About a year ago, I came across a white one at a local estate sale and I won the bid! It is gorgeous and both of my featherweight sew beautifully! Each of them were under $400. I also have my mother-in-law’s singer 15-91! It came in its own cabinet with a sitting stool. The cabinet was pretty much a mess so I took it out and use it on a table top.

Hi. I just found your videos today and you remind me so much of my mother. In 29 days will be the first anniversary of her death. I am so proud of you and loved to hear about seeing the lilies and the bridge at the museum. I plan to continue following you and the chats. I own two Featherweight machines, a black original with the gold designs on it and I was given a one someone had found in a shop that had been painted red. Someone really brought it back to life and it runs actually better than a Bernina. They did put back on labels to make it look like the black one. I call her Rosey. I am from Mililani Hawaii and I am 73 years old. I feel we have grown up and seen so many things and changes/innovations in our life’s. I only hope that others like you and me pass on valuable spoken life lessons that can be passed down through the ages. Only thru these memories can we keep the sacrifices others before us have suffered so we can have a better life. May you have a good 2024❤

I thoroughly enjoyed your chat today, Granny Pat, as I am a quilter! I came to appreciate antique quilts because my Mom had several hanging in the house as I was growing up. She even hung a beautiful blue and white “Ohio Star” quilt in my bedroom that hung there until I moved out as an adult after graduating from college. My Mom passed away in 2005..she was 76 and she was my best friend. I think of her every single day. I recently moved back to my hometown after being away for 18 years. I am so incredibly happy to be back near all of my family (sisters, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews). The newest addition is my niece’s baby boy who is 1 year old❤️ I moved from a fairly large home into a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom 900 square foot condo which I am absolutely loving! I have one of the bedrooms set up as my sewing room which makes me so happy. And I still have that antique blue and white quilt that hung in my bedroom for all those years. It’s hanging proudly in my dining area and brings me such joy! I was thrilled to see your Flower Basket quilt. It is so delightful..something you should be quite proud of. I would love to see some of the other things you’ve sewn over the years. It’s a wonderful hobby! Enjoy the rest of your day! Thanks for sharing!

Dear Granny Pat, I Love the Story about your Mothers sewing machine. I Truly Love Your Feather Weight! It looks like brand new. You are a Sweetheart! You take such good care of your things. I would love to find a feather weight one of these days on an antique shopping trip. I too think they are the best machine ever. I did find a nice one in a box . It is a little newer in very good shape that I treasure. I like to sew. When I was young I started piecing a quilt together. My oldest brother came in one day , and said ole she’s gonna get married she’s making a quilt. I was thinking no I’m not. Well about a year later I got married. I guess that’s what the women used to do . Start making quilts when someone was going to get married. I sewed it all by hand. It was a flower garden guilt. My Aunt showed me how. She could sew anything. She made some quilts like yours that had several smaller baskets. Your quilt is beautiful! I Love Your Stories ! I would like to give you a Big Ole Hug for this One!!! So many Memories!!! Love You! Thanks for the Story’s. Bonnie Lou from Ohio ♥️😘
