Edwards have the woodworking done in China and the finish, hardware and setup are done in Japan. I asked an ESP Craft House [flagship store for ordering ESP custom guitars] employee in Shibuya (Tokyo) and he confirmed it. I used to live in Japan so I’m pretty familiar with the brand(s). Edwards also has done a lot of limited models that are now discontinued. I had a Jimmy Page relic that was really great. As others have said, Navigator is the higher end (comparable price to Gibsons) with nitro finishes. Grassroots is the budget line.
The little 8-pin IC on the green circuit board appears to be a 386D from Japan Radio Corporation; i suspect it is equivalent to the better known LM386, which is a monolithic audio amplifier with a power output of between 0.25 and 1.00 Watts, depending on speaker impedance and supply voltage. I'm an electronics hobbyist so i happen to know the LM386 quite well. Happy New Year, Trogly!
This gave me a great idea for my next guitar build project. I wanted to build a 24 inch scale length guitar, but I wasn't sure what size body would go good with that length. I'm going to use the measurements you took on the body in this video to build this guitar. So it will be super close to a normal guitar scale length with a bit of a smaller body.
These are Korean-made, not Japanese. The "GW" on the back is code for "George Washburn," as they make these in the Washburn factory. Also, the GW04410205 is NOT a serial number. It is a code number, which the black & the sunburst model, shared. The white models say, "WMxxxxxxx," but I'm pretty sure they are also from Korea.

I’ll admit that Edwards & Grassroots is very popular guitars in Russia. Most of people prefer affordable good copies of Gibson guitars. This guitars is like a hot cakes in our country
Regarding where Edwards are made - for a short period in the late 2000s, initial woodworking for some models was moved to a special economic zone in north-eastern China using raw materials supplied by ESP, with the guitars then being shipped back to Japan for finishing/set-up etc. However, production has since wholly returned to Japan. As an aside, I've owned plenty of ESP Standard Series models, and more than a few Edwards (in fact, just yesterday I sold my Edwards E-LP-130CD/P), and I can confirm that the quality of these instruments, the components, and the fit and finish is just superb, especially considering the prices you pay.
@@tosh-jakefinnigan1356 I'd also like to add on to Grassroots since none really make it to the USA - they're around 100-600 tier LTD quality, depending on model. The LPC copy I got from them feels arguably almost on par with EC-1000s which are already amazing feeling as it is. I can't speak for them all since this is the only domestic one I found recently and got to play, but it's a good enough jumping point for me to buy more.
Edwards is top-tier quality. Austin: "You just need a 9 volt battery that isn't dead!" *looks at my Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder with an EMG Super 77 and Sustainiac* Me: "I don't have 9 volt batteries."
Edwards, GrassRoots and Navigator guitars are really rare outside of Japan, but the Finland’s biggest ESP dealer/shop Musamaailma (finnish for ”Music World”) has Edwards and GrassRoots guitars in stock brand new, and when I bought a GrassRoots Black Beauty Les Paul brand new from Musamaailma, the seller told me that they got them through good relations with ESP. But the guitar itself rocks! Really wanted a Jon Nödveidt and Miika Tenkula kind of guitar and got one!
My go to musical instruments store in Indonesia carries ESP, LTD, and Grassroots, but curiously enough no Edwards. I am not a guitarist, but my guitarist friend settled on a Grassroots Strato when we were shopping for instruments for our college practice studio on a tight budget. He loved it, and he said it was better than even some more expensive Squiers.
Thanks for another great video! What are your thoughts on the Traveler/LTD EG-1? Full scale length, no headstock, built in headphone amp. I want one to keep in my car.
Considering there’s very little good information out there regarding Edwards and Navigators, I’m sure a lot of us would love to see you review and discuss full sized models of both. Additionally, if you could share more information regarding the actual product lines (E-LP-98/110/125/130/140, etc.). Would love to see some more Edwards/Navigator guitars. I got one recently from Japan (via Reverb). The process was extremely easy, and I didn't have to pay any customs fees.
Channel idea: what if when reviewing gibson inspired guitars like this- you give your opinion on how it compares to a legit Les Paul Studio. That way we have some context with how it feels or if it actually worth the trouble at all. Just an idea! Love the show- keep up your incredible work!

IN THE 80s I BOUGHT AN INCREDIBLE BLACK LES PAUL, CHINESE LAWSUIT ERA KNOCK OFF, IT WAS LABELED "CUSTOM" ON THE HEADSTOCK INSTEAD OF GIBSON. THIS WAS ARGUABLY THE NICEST LES PAUL COPY I HAVE EVER PLAYED... IT WAS BUILT WITH LOVE. HELL I LOVED IT MORE THAN My ROOMIES REAL Les Paul. BUT NEEDED A P.A. SYSTEM I AND IT WAS BLACK< SURE TO SCRATCH AND SO I WALKED OUT FROM MY LOCAL MUSIC STORE WITH 2 CERWIN VEGA 3 WAY CABINETS - WITH 15s AND REAL METAL HORNS, TWO BLACK WIDOW FLOOR MONITORS, A POWER 10k WT CROWN POWER AMP I STILL HAVE, A 16 CHANNEL BOARD & MY GIBSON GRABBER (BASS WHEN ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WANTED ONE & I'D MADE FRETLESS MYSELF -- EVERYTHING FROM THE METICULOUS 10 CLAMS WORK OF MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID ON THE HEADSTOCK TOP & DIAMONDS IN THE CENTER, TO THE BINDING & TUNERS, EVEN THE TWO DIMARZIO SUPER DISTORTION PICKUPS JUST FOR FUN. I COULD GO ON... BUT MAN... I MISS THAT GUITAR EVERYDAY. PLEASE DON'T TELL ME WHAT IT'S WORTH TODAY OR IF THEY EVEN STILL EXIST< BUT IT PLAYED ABSOLUTELY A--MAZING AND SOMEONE SURELY LOVES IT TODAY. - EVEN MY ROOMATE's $6K BURST LesPAUL COULDN'T COMPARE. I PAID $200 BUCKS FOR IT FROM A GUY WHO NEEDED HIS RENT, AND HE TOLD ME HE WENT TO CHINA TO BUY IT.... AND ASKED ME PL:EASE DON'T SELL IT TO ANYONE ELSE WHEN I WAS READY TO UNLOAD IT. MAN THE THINGS YA DO FOR MONEY... NOW I BUY Les Pauls FOR INVESTMENT PURPOSES...
Looks pretty neat… Do you think it would work good as a kids guitar, say age 8 to 12? Or is it more of a pro guitar that an adult could carry around as a travel piece
Back in 2015 when the Yen was weak, I bought a new Edwards E-MA-110 (Eclipse body) and even with shipping costs it was still cheaper than buying an LTD EC-1000 new in the US. Paid no taxes either, not sure if that's still the case. But the Edwards destroyed the LTD in build and feel. Edwards is not only knockoffs - it makes the original ESP shapes as well, Navigator is the one that makes only super high end knockoffs.
wouldn't even mind if you went over Edwards guitars in general, as they've dropped some really funky stuff over the years. Sadly, most of them discontinued.
Wow that is a awesome idea you know normally here in the state what you would see is a battery powered micro am that you clip to your belt and have it cabled up to your guitar nice idea
I have two Edwards "LPCs", 05 and 08. Yes, there's talk they are started off in China and finished in Japan, no one seems to know for sure. Only newer ones actually say MIJ. I don't see a reason why you wouldn't have the guitar say MIJ unless you're not allowed to, because they are not actually MIJ. Someone on a forum claimed to have asked ESP directly and they said China. There was also some photos from a Chinese factory where there were unfinished Edwards guitars but also ESP standard models iirc. Take with a grain of salt. My ESP dealer/importer recently started carrying Edwards. They said they are MIJ and have always been. About 13 years ago I asked same dealer why they don't carry Edwards and I was told "we don't carry garbage". I don't know how things have changed over the years but they do say Made In Japan now.
I feel like John Lennon would have loved a guitar like this. He preferred short-scale guitars, and his Rickenbacker 325 guitar was the exact same scale length of 20.5”.
Travel guitars are great. I used to have a red Grass Roots Akira Takasaki mini guitar that was also made by ESP. It sounded ok plugged in but certainly not great. love the little Ibanez PG Mikro I got at Christmas.
I don't know if they are still in business or not, but in the late 90's there was a shop here in Britain called Percy Priors' and they specialised in ESP, Edwards and Grassroots , Explorer shaped metal type guitars. Ramon from the Guitar Show channel owns a couple of Navigator guitars he bought used from a Japanese guitar broker website and he swears by them.
Edwards guitars are so cool, played one of their more esp like models at a store once. Some people say their in between LTD and ESP. In my experience theure pretty much the same with the LTDs in similar price ranges I wish we could get them easier here. Mostly cuz eclipses (as much as i adore them) my one gripe with them is theyre too thin and light
James D Brandhuber they offer full thickness Eclipses but the finish options aren’t Gibson-esque, the cutaway is different, they aren’t four knobs, etc.
Look into the 400VF and 401VF series eclipses on reverb. Usually come with Seymour Duncan's or DiMarzio pafs and are full thickness - also extremely heavya
I would put the speaker at the bridge and use a neck pickup for a little more warmth in the tone, since clean tones are likely going to be more of the tickets for this little instruments in that tiny speaker.
Edwards is more ESP than LTD, Grassroots would be more LTD - at least in my opinion with the ones I've felt. Not that edwards are expensive like ESPs new, but feel-wise and construction I'd say its closer to ESP standard series. Not only that, but Edwards also does factory custom style stuff as well. Navigator is actually the highest grade out of them all and are insanely high quality. also I do believe edwards does make some parts outside of Japan, but all the factory work and QC and assembly are done in japan - well that's what it USED to be at the least.
There has been confusion about whether Edwards are now made in China and assembled in Japan. I did a lot of research and could not find a 100% answer. Although I am now leaning to the side of that being true.
The old lady just picked on of these up for me for a Christmas present, except mine will be cherry burst, and I’m pumped lol. I’am slightly bummed because I missed the dual pickup version by a day but the speakup will be ok, might swap it
This was definitely the most attractive mini LP I've had... but can you really call it a mini?

I respect anyone who can brag about their 19 inch Peewee , you go dude!
"Speak Up" makes a surprising amount of sense with how much the Japanese love their portmanteaus
Would love to see some more Edwards/Navigator guitars. I got one recently from Japan (via Reverb). The process was extremely easy, and I didn't have to pay any customs fees.
That thing actually sounds good.
That's a lap steel case bud! You can actually still see the imprint from a lap steel that was kept in it for quite a while.
Keep rocking BROTHER love the content
Channel idea: what if when reviewing gibson inspired guitars like this- you give your opinion on how it compares to a legit Les Paul Studio. That way we have some context with how it feels or if it actually worth the trouble at all. Just an idea! Love the show- keep up your incredible work!
This reminds me of the time I bought a Jackson Rhodes minion on accident
@@Rand_al_Thor372 I thought "what a deal on a Rhodes ( thought minion was a special edition or something), drove home to get it and it was a miniature one. I immediately returned it and bought a Dean Zero DM signature
Edwards and Navigator are GREAT guitars. I lived Tokyo for 20 years and always checked out the used ones at Shimokura Gakki or Ishibashi...
I've wanted one of these for years!!
I've got a cheaper one?lol
This thing is just cool. I like it.
That speak up is interesting, but it needs a gold metal cover. A small detail that the builder missed.
not necessary, essential or a missed detail.there are hundreds of les pauls with covered and uncovered or mismatched humbuckers in them.
Hey!
I don't know about America but Edwards are now being imported to Norway for sale so i think that ban has been lifted. Just thought you might want to know. i'm gong to my local guitar store to try one out when they arrive Jan.2020 :)
Take care
Happy New Year
I played a standard Les Paul from Edwards and it played really well! I didn't purchase it but i'm considering it
That little thing has better fretwork than my guitar
I love your videos! Keep up the good work!
It’d work great for both applications
Back in 2015 when the Yen was weak, I bought a new Edwards E-MA-110 (Eclipse body) and even with shipping costs it was still cheaper than buying an LTD EC-1000 new in the US. Paid no taxes either, not sure if that's still the case. But the Edwards destroyed the LTD in build and feel. Edwards is not only knockoffs - it makes the original ESP shapes as well, Navigator is the one that makes only super high end knockoffs.
I need one of those little airline size bottles of Jack Daniels to go with this guitar.
Can we move the "SpeakUp" to the bridge position,
and move the real humbucker to the neck position
without any drill or wood work ?
wouldn't even mind if you went over Edwards guitars in general, as they've dropped some really funky stuff over the years.
Dang Austin! you sure spent enough time demonstrating this freak of nature, thanks anyway
This is my dream guitar !
It sounded ok plugged in but certainly not great.
love the little Ibanez PG Mikro I got at Christmas.
is that a paf speak up? love to see you review a blueshawk
That sold fast, I thank the buyer for saving me $500.
In my experience theure pretty much the same with the LTDs in similar price ranges
I wish we could get them easier here.
The full thickness ones are hard to find tho
Yeah, the sub-brand that it's in between ESP and LTD/Edwards are the E-II ones, and at the true low-end you have Grass Roots and the LTD's 10 series.
I never really tried their Navigator models, so I can't really have an opinion on them.
Navigators rock I own 2 ones les Paul standard. The other is a George lynch camo in red gray.
Shipping for Edwards is around a hundred bucks and arrives in 48 hours
16:36 master of puppet sized guitar 😂
thats a pretty cool guitar for what it is. wouldn't mind having one.
I would put the speaker at the bridge and use a neck pickup for a little more warmth in the tone, since clean tones are likely going to be more of the tickets for this little instruments in that tiny speaker.
"So, this guitar is pretty small. Just for reference my pee wee it's..."
*Ziper noises*
Holy Egads Austin, I love you mad lad.
Idk if it's just the amp but that thing sounds like a guitar to me. Not too shabby
Take your pick from Squier Mini, Ibanez MiKro, Jackson Dinky or even Epiphone's short scale guitars.
That was a good buy Trogly 👀❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️ I went to buy it and it was already sold as usual
ESP: How many sub-brands are we gonna have Mr. Hisatake Shibuya?
Hisatake Shibuya: YES
The old lady just picked on of these up for me for a Christmas present, except mine will be cherry burst, and I’m pumped lol. I’am slightly bummed because I missed the dual pickup version by a day but the speakup will be ok, might swap it
Have you looked at the Gibson ES-140 T? I find them fairly awesome.
One day I might get a mini for fun.
