  • In episode #31 of The Martial Truth Podcast I discuss what becoming a "Disciple," in Chinese Martial Arts means. For me it was probably the most important Martial Arts decision I made. A lifelong relationship with the Master.

Thank you for all of your videos, in fact. And yes, I've noticed this thing, too -- Mr. Chen's surprisingly great command of the language! And thought the same thing as you've just said: not enough to be a grand master, but one's ability to explain means a good deal (myself being a bit of a teacher, but more of a student, of course).

Not everyone needs to be a disciple. I used to think I would want to apply to be a disciple but I have come to recognize that it is as much a duty/responsibility as it is a privilege. Personally, I'm very interested in Taiji, but I'm a hobbyist and not much good as a teacher of any sort, so I've come to accept that discipleship is probably not for me.
