I released a new full length album in Feb and have CDs on offer. Everyone who bought one all did so with a disclaimer of “I know I’m old school”, but as you say, I am SO delighted that they want to support my music…CD, Vinyl, Digital, Stream, whatever… Moreover, the time and energy put into making an attractive physical product is significant, and so those folks that bought a CD have all said how “beautiful” they think it is, and how they enjoy holding it in their hand. Go CDs! Go music sales!

I gave it up because my listening habits largely shifted to streaming because of convenience, but I missed the physical aspect of the music, holding the thing, flipping through a booklet as I'm listening to the music. CDs are much less heavy than records, easier to transport and easier to store. I own vinyl, cassettes and CDs, but I've shifted more towards CDs lately.

CDs as a medium never left. They just dwindled a little. But what in my opinion is happening now is that CDs as a music media are transitioning (or maybe already did transitioned) from a mass item to a niche one. Exactly like vinyl records.
So the real coming back of the CDs would be to have on them well mastered recordings (high beautifully sounding dynamic range) instead of the "for car/walkman listening" (low and compressed bad sounding DR) mastered recordings.
Today CDs are mostly listened on Hi-fi systems in quiet home environments. No more cars or walkmans. Labels (Sony especially, sorry to say names) should acknowledge this and comeback to publishing CDs suited for this.

Young independent musicians will bring them back. Vinyl pressings are too expensive. Tapes were revived by millenial bands, but fans were buying them as merchandise without owning a cassette player. There will be a 90's revival driven by Gen Z nostalgia. Its still easy and cheap to get hold of a cd player. And even if they don't go out looking for one, lots of the affordable 2nd hand cars that these kids will be driving still have Cd players

I can play my cds in my bly ray surround sound . One system plays my cds, dvds, and blu rays so cds up in here. Plus I rip to my pc so I can download a mix to my flash drive for my car. This way my discs stay at home safe. I have that xm raido but I never use it anymore. Not when I can just pick up random cds that look neat for 1.00 at flea markets and put like 30 albums on a flash drive.

Does anyone have a good comparison on appeal, demand, sales, etc. - either based on the overall market and/or on one's own fanbase - of different physical media: vinyls vs. CDs vs. tapes vs. other (i.e., mini-discs)? It seems like it would be fun to dabble with each medium but, ultimately, an artist would just focus on what's most wanted, and thus also purchased.

Gone ? FFS, even Target and K_Mart here in Oz still sell them - mostly new release pop dross admittedly but they never dropped the silver discs. Anyone still buying cassettes in 2022 needs professional help, but CDs never went away - you can still buy those all-in-one boomboxes with a cd drive in them and many car stereos still have the slot for a disc. I don't spend a lot of time at JB Hi-Fi - the name is a joke for a chain that sells little more than HT receivers and cheap speakers - but they have row-upon-row of vinyl and CDs. Clearly someone is still buying them. Hell, even DVDs still take up shelf space in our supermarkets - I guess we really are trapped in the 90s ;)

why they ever faded is beyond logic. superior to vinyl in every way. analog vs digital can be debated but its mostly an academic argument. after that cds win hands down. non degradeable laser cds vs needle wear vinyl. easy storage. 1000 cds vs 1000 lps. a couple of bookshelves vs buckling wall shelves or crates stacked everywhere. portability for the car with cheap car players and no need to create downloads. easy track skipping vs lifting a tonearm and hoping for the best. last collectible format. the big 3. lps, cassettes, cds. reel to reel never caught on bigtime and forget 8 track. and very low prices now vs over priced vinyl. it never got better. trying to improve on cd like trying to improve on the wheel.
