Simone Simons is the lead singer, and she switched from studying pop singing to classical singing when she was about 15, after hearing early Nightwish with Tarja. She was still a teenager when she helped found Epica. Guitarist Mark Jansen also does harsh vocals on about half of Epica's songs; they really are one of the heaviest symphonic metal bands. They took their name from a Kamelot album title. I got into the band with their 2007 'The Divine Conspiracy' album. 'Sancta Terra' was on it, but it wasn't a duet until this video was recorded. I got to see Epica live once, in about 2014, after their album 'The Quantum Enigma' came out, in a small local venue.
The reason Simone Simons didn't go full-bore with the headbanging was probably that she was pregnant during this "Retrospect" concert. But she still managed a three-hour show! Later that year she toured Australia and China while at six months. EDIT: It maybe goes without saying, but please keep digging into the Epica rabbit hole! My suggestion is something harder that also shows off their male vocalist and their more edgy, prog tendencies: "The Skeleton Key" from their "Omega live" concert. It might look like a music video, but it's a live performance without a live audience.
Floor, her sister Irene, and Simone were housemates in the past when they were in music school together, so they are tight. The deep voices guy at the end is Mark Jansen, no relation, who was in After Forever with Floor, so they tight as well.
Simone Simons (the lead singer of Epica) and Floor happen to be great friends : they've been playing in the same festivals in the Netherlands all over Europe for about 20 years, shared the stage countless times. Also, Mark Jansen, Epica's guitarist (the one who yells "Floor Janseeeeen" at the end) used to be the co-founder of After Forever, Floor's first band, until he left and created in Epica back in 2002.
Love the band, Simone is my favorite singer. 20 years of great music, and this song was 10 years ago. Recommend Epica - Unleashed from the retrospekt show.
Hi Ash, greetings from UK I'm glad you liked this one. Floor & Simone have been friends for years and have sung together on many occasions so they know how to blend their voices Floor windmilling in this song is so damned EPIC! I want that as a GIF 😁 It is a shame that your channel has grown so much that there are more demands on your time. I think you only post Floor or Nightwish once per month now........I miss your reactions 🥰
OMG no Epica? Go down that rabbit hole! The range of songs is even bigger than with Nightwish, from lovely ballads to songs with some strong death metal infusion. It is also one of those bands where the live versions are the ones you want to watch
OOOOH ! Ash you are in for a real treat. So at one end of the scale of Epicaness check out ‘Consign to Oblivion’ Live from Paris and at the other end you have ‘Rivers’ Live ft Apocalyptica. Both are amazing bookends to the astonishing range of musical output and sheer talent that is Epica.
@@cancelled_user not really into growling or screaming myself but with Epica they always seem to deliver a balance of vocals where the harsh vocals are appropriate rather than constant. That tips the balance for me because the music is amazing. The two songs I have suggested were chosen specifically to illustrate the range of the band from quite a lot of growls to none.
oh man i love this version. that course is so catchy and it stays wiith you. One fun fact about this band. Floor Jansen and the guitarist Mark Jansen (no relations) used to be in the band After Forever together. Mark left After Forever over musical differences and formed Epica
Hi Ash, EPICA are an amazing band, here is their latest Live video from a concert earlier this year in Amsterdam, it's one of their older songs, but an incredible new performance. EPICA - Unleashed (Live At The AFAS Live)
In 2022 Epica made a colab album. There you find the song "Sirens" and the joining voices of Charlote Wessels (Delain) and Myrkur are true to the title. And there is a very cool live feature of Apocalyptica performing "Rivers" with Epica. In any case if you decide to look deeper into their music ejoy your stay.
Greetings. Well, if you noticed them getting quite close onstage that's because they are. Floor and Simone went to the same school for opera, graduated together, and have been very close since. Floor has done other collabs with Epica as well. 😊❤️🤘🤘
What I love about these two is that they are masters of their craft, they have the most beautiful love and respect for one another. The way that they are so playful with each other is so gorgeous and I'm sorry so cute it's why I love all these overseas bands, they have respect! Oh if you want to continue your Epica journey watch "Code of life", but with the lyrics, they have deep meaning to all the BS in the world today(at least I Think)🦇☠️🌹
This song was my introduction to them as well. IMHO, Epica and Nightwish are 1 and 1a for symphonic metal. Epica is a harder sound, which I think fits your preferences better, judging from your past reactions. This was at Epica's 10th-anniversary show, which featured the 80-piece orchestra and a choir. Another song from this Retrospect show would be Unleashed, which will give you the full flavor of Simone's voice. Epica also features Mark Jansen doing growls to complement Simone's ethereal voice. Others to listen to... Consign to Oblivion at the Zenith in Paris, The Essence of Silence, and their magnum opus song, Kingdom of Heaven, Part 3 from the Omega Alive virtual show.
There is a video of Floor and Simone but this one Simone is the guest and it is from 2007. The show was Revamp and they sang "Sweet Curse". That is a great song to also listen to.
Simone Simons and Floor are both from the provincie Noord Brabant so is Anneke van Giersbergen (the Gathering) and Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon)GO there you cant go wrong!!
First song i heard from Epica was a song called "Feint" , i think it was back around 2005 maybe? I have seen them in concert as well and they always kick ass, great interaction with the crowd and they have a lot of fun on stage. As for songs to check out, i don't know what ones you have done so far but for my money i would say "unleashed", "consign to oblivion", "the skeleton key".
No doubt everyone's given you the facts & stats already! - I discovered Floor & Nightwish here on RUclips through reactors such as yourself, then this very song was my introduction to Epica! I've not seen as much of their songs yet, but my favourite so far is 'Unleashed' - recommend watching that live from this same show! 😊❤
This performance is awesome! And it’s not just because of the masterful vocalists or the extremely talented drummer. It’s also because of the sound engineering. There are about 30 people on that stage that needs to hear themselves in order to perform. On top of that everything needs to be properly mixed. I tip my hat to them becuase this sounds amazing!
Hey Ash! I like to consider this DVD taping to be the definition of "Overdelivering for your Fans" - something like 28 songs, with orchestra, choir, acrobats (you'll see 😉) and *two* visits from Floor! Just crazy! Rock on! 🤘😎👍
Thanks for your reaction, was hoping you would this one sooner rather then later. An absolute masterpiece with arguably 2 of the most powerful female voices... and it makes me so proud to call myself Dutch.
Some suggestions of Epica The Essence of Silence live Brussels Design your own Universe Live Retrospect Consign to Oblivion live Zenith Paris Unleashed live Retrospect Dancing in a Hurricane Live Zenith Paris Kindom of Heaven part 3 Omega alive Universal death squad (I always have to think at the Terminator movies) Ballads Rivers Chili or with Apocalyptica Feint live 20th aniversary show In all conscience Omega alive Once upon a nightmare Omega alive
I'd love to see them just combine their bands together. They can have 2 drummers, 3 guitar players, 2 bass players and 2 keyboard players. They can either collaborate on songs together or the person who writes the songs for Epica can write a few songs and Tuomas could write songs. They can call themselves Ultra Epica.
Great reaction! You should also see them do Stabat Mater Dolorosa from this same show. They sing it in Latin, a hymn fro the 13th century. I cant understand a word, but its what angels must sound like.
Yeah, the fans there got a real treat on that one because they came to see Epica and got to see them with a full orchestra full course and add in floor and you have perfection
Would agree with a few others here. Absolutely adore Floor and Nightwish, but Epica definitely worth a further dive. Think someone mentioned Consign to oblivion at the Zenith in Paris at the hard end, and Rivers with Apocolyptica at the more sedate and beautiful end, but also Unleashed a great one.
Floor and Simone are long-time besties....side note: Mark Jansen: the lead guitarist, co-founder, and the guy who shouted "Floor Jansen" at the end (no relation to Floor) was Floor's bandmate back in the day in "After Forever"
Epica and Floor brought an amazing show for sure :) If you like melodic metal then you will like ORKHYS :) it's a french melodic metal band, with a Harp, mixing pagan, celtic, heavy, thrash, black and symphonic genres :)
Simone und Floor came both from the Netherlands Simone is the Singer by Epica and floor is the singer of Nightwish floor is simones big sister in Metall
There *may* come a time when you have a crisis in faith and think that maybe you like Epica more than Nightwish - while loving both. That's okay. To me, Epica is Nightwish turned up to 11. Kingdom of Heaven pt 3 from Omega Alive is my go-to for 'This is Epica.'
if you want some gothic vibes, then there is one of the fresh cool songs: Epica - the skeleton key (official music video) sancta terra is a very mediocre song for Epica, its hype is only because of Floor jansen. Epica has a lot of material much cooler

I'm sure others have commented this, but now you must do Stabat Mater Delorosa from this same show. If I've read correctly, it's a really old (think 13th century) Christian song about Mary's pain in seeing her son on the cross. The composer was an Italian (sorry, forgot the name without looking it up) that was dying... and the story goes he knew he was dying and it was the last piece of music he wrote before passing... so there's lot's of story and history with that song, and where this is the more rock side of Simone/Floor together, Stabat Mater is the beautiful, moving side of their pairing. bring your tissues... if you don't shed tears of sadness at the song, you'll shed tears of joy at the beauty of these two godesses bringing the song to life... in the middle of a metal concert to boot!
Have always liked how many of the "Symphonic Metal Community" members support each other...🤘...with guest appearances... The American Music "Labels/Promoters" should take notes... Pleased That YOU Were Pleased with this experience!..👍

When Simone and Floor harmonize, they have the power to open up the heavens with their voices. Lol

Epica feat. Apocalyptica-RIVERS (live at the AFAS). You will not be disappointed. Trust me❤
Simone and Floor are not only Dutch.
They've also been friends for a long time.

I love this!!
Next, from the same concert, ‘Unleashed’ is a must! Totally anthemic…you’ll love it!!
I saw a comment somewhere about this song that said “when Floor and Simone sing together it is like a new instrument”… how true is that!
OMG. THIS!!!
Simone and Floor are Bestie's and ex roomates. There's a funny on you tube of the both of them goofing off and rehearsing worth a looksee. Thank you.
That was in Simone's home but they were never roommates.
No doubt everyone's given you the facts & stats already! - I discovered Floor & Nightwish here on RUclips through reactors such as yourself, then this very song was my introduction to Epica!

Good isn’t it!?!😊
Try - Epica - Consign To Oblivion (Live at the Zenith)
