Suunto Race S First Look Review: Two runners test Suunto’s new AMOLED watch

- The Suunto Race S is a new AMOLED sports watch that brings most of the features of the Sutton Race to a smaller, cheaper watch that also sports a new HR sensor. On paper the Suunto Race S looks excellent, not least because of it’s relatively low £325 / $349 price. Mike and Nick have been out for some first runs with the watch; here’s their early take on it ahead of our full review in a few weeks.

Mike: Is it Tequila on your back? - Cheers from México.
Does the suunto chest strap also gives wrong hr results? When no ohr is correct, i always use chest strap
If they were the same price, Race or race S?
I don't understand how you can get such bad OHR results 🤔? I have also compared with the chest strap and there are very similar results between the Race and the Polar strap.
Waiting for a new Garmin
Same
Exactly. Accuracy of the Suunto products is discutable at all categories. In other words: even for free charge of any Suunto I will rather buy Garmin for money. :D
Epix 51mm is on offer for £525?
Only in white however.
Or are you waiting for Instinct 3/Fenix 8?
@@AleCardenasRealtor Garmin are great but soooo overpriced. Plus they’re plastic..
I planned to buy Vertical for Ultra Runs but... because it is 500GBP and I was not so sure am I gonna be happy by swapping to suunto which I really like it how it is desing, how it looks.. but no option to put music into it or loosing garmin connect system I was like... ehhmmm ok... maybe garmin and same there only 965 interested or Enduro 2. So ok... I will give a try to cheaper Race S and I will see is it gonna stay with me bacause of preloaded .GPX maps or I gonna swap back to garmin or because of lack of battery I'm gonna buy Vertical. Just I saw Race S got more smooth menu then Vertical to be honest I don't care about that amoled screen, even old one less power hungry will be better for me but... Ok... let see how it will go adventure with it.. waiting for parcel now.
It’s cheap?
No, it’s just cheaper than the bigger version.
@@Njabuloseh that’s too bad
Why are sports watches so so expensive???
I had one delivered last week and the build quality was really good.
The firmware though was stuck in factory testing mode and the device wouldn’t even boot - seems like Suunto rushed this out and/or quality control skipped a beat. Had to return it.
Wouldn’t Forerunner 165 be a better choice for most runners or am I missing something? Cheaper. £249 currently so some extra cash left to get a chest strap as well. Suunto S has maps. But I think most people will load up a course and then the breadcrumb navigation on 165 works very well. Heart rate accuracy and gps accuracy seems better on 165. Track mode better. Battery life is lower on 165 but unless you’re an ultra++ runner the 19h is fine.
165 is all plastic and looks like a toy.
Garmin are great but they’re very “plasticky” and don’t feel especially sturdy. Quality control hasn’t been a feature of my Garmins either with multiple returns. My Suuntos on the other just won’t break (so I can get a new one).
Like the Suunto race, the S model is not better😮
Obviously watching the wrong reviews…. Latest data shows Race S hr has a correlation of R=0.9945 compared to a heart rate chest strap. This is better than Garmin.
You can get most Garmins discounted so I'd go for one of them instead that fits your budget, I got the Forerunner 965 for £495 so I’m sure you’ll get something equivalent for the same money
500 quid vs 330 euro is a big difference, silly comparison.
I wasn’t comparing the two, saying you can get Garmin on a deal, didn’t make it clear, have amended original post
🤣 you can get anything with discounted price at some point
Seem OHR on the Race S still has so bad accuracy. Sad when heard about that 😢
The OHR is actually as good as Garmin etc. look at DCRs review instead.
@@jeffreytillack4709 do u think this is as good as 965 overall, I’m so confused to purchase
@@ngocduy2179 Nah the HR reading on the latest Garmins is better, you can see even on DCRainmaker's review that sometimes the Race S OHR struggles. If anything Suunto managed to close the gap a bit but is still behind
@@jeffreytillack4709 Do u think it's as good as 965 overall? I'm confused about purchasing one of above these ?
Yeah I am wondering if these guys have a faulty unit because every other review has positive things to say about OHR readings
If you don't like it. don't buy it. simple.
In short: cheapish crap!
Cheapish crap? Compared to what?
In short : snob
shame its got gorilla glass... since I can remember suunto was all sapphire crystal.
Just get a screen protector. A benefit with Gorilla glass reflects much less and transmit more light through compared to sapphire.
I have my Suunto 9 for 5 years…( the old model) which has mineral glas… I am using it 5days/week since 5 years and have no display scratches….
Nobody needs saphire crystal
