the part about how bloggers, tabloids, news sites, politicians etc all present the same way in the same spaces online is one of my biggest problems with social media; context collapse. the uncentralized nature of the internet makes it so that there’s no hard boundaries between different types of media (i.e, a blog post venting frustration vs an activist’s call to action), and this means people can’t always discern who’s saying what for what purpose. identifying the speaker, the context, and the purpose for a piece of writing is *basic* media literacy, and people can’t develop that when news looks the same as gossip.
