  • **UPDATE** try warming up the color part of the plug a little bit with a hair dryer to soften the outer cover.
    This is how i take apart an N64 controller plug. This is useful for switching cords but keeping the same color cord plug or to make it a lot easier to do a custom paint job on the cord plug. or you could just replace the whole cord.

    I did it! Jesus Christ. Pretty terrifying. Thank you for your advice. I also pushed down the black plastic through the shell's hole, I think that helped a bit. And I also made sure to pull it not directly out, but slightly in the direction where no plastic strip had been inserted. Maybe that helps somebody. Good luck everyone

      @JKiefer 3 месяца назад

      @@jaypace8018 It's been a while since I did it, but if it snaps -- are you using pliers to push it in, like he does at 4:00? You want to use them and grab the plastic strip as close to the rim of the shell as possible, that way you only can push it in maybe 1 or 2mm at a time, but it shouldn't snap. It will definitely bend and snap if you apply pressure from the end of the strip. Off the top of my head I can't think of anything else to use, unless by any chance you have a firm piece of metal with the perfect thickness that you could cut into a strip ...

    This i's impossible. Right when I've been looking at how to disassemble the plug, for which there are NO other resources on the internet, you decide to upload this video. After I've been struggling trying not to destroy it for hours, you upload a video doing exactly what I needed to see. I'm looking at this video only a few hours after it's been uploaded, and that is unreal to me! I've attempted this in the past but never thought to try and snap in all three points, I can't thank you enough!

    I would put this at very hard to Impossible for the average person. I tried for 2 hours without success. The credit card strips will snap off if you are not careful. I got them all in as far as they would go. I pulled and pulled and pulled. Managed to damage the piece I was trying to get off. Pushed credit card pieces in harder. Pulled and pulled and cut my finger. Switched to metal flat pieces to shove in thinking I could get them in further without snapping. Same result. Pulled and pulled and pulled....nothing. Put another mark on piece I was trying to save and cut another finger. Maybe if you put the piece in a clamp and pulled??? Two hours and worse off than when I started. Anyone else actually try this?

    Do you know why?

    • @ARCTICLABSERVICES
      @ARCTICLABSERVICES  6 лет назад

      TheCool X-gamer, it could be a lot of things. Dirty ports or plug, cable has a short, or something on the controller pcb is bad. I have heard that the crystals can go bad. Or even bad memory card can cause this.

    • @djones02
      @djones02 5 лет назад

      Had the same thing happen while playing Mario kart. I took it apart and for some reason there is no connection on the white wire. I even ripped the housing off the plug. It looks fine and test failed. The other wires all work fine.
      Found a replacement cord on Amazon for a few dollars and every wire tests ok. Now I just need to solder it in. I'm scared.

      @ARCTICLABSERVICES  6 лет назад

      mark terzi yes and no. I have tried several times to do this to a GameCube controller cord but when I use the plyers to pull it a part, it mutilates the metal part. A special tool might need to be made to get it a part. It made a video but since I wasn't successful, I didn't post it.

    • @ARCTICLABSERVICES
      @ARCTICLABSERVICES  6 лет назад

      Josh Gavin, I made a video but mangled the plugs trying to get it a part. Plus the wires in the metal housing is hard to get out. It was a disaster so I didn't post the video. If I still have it I might post it any way to show everyone how hard it is. Special tools might need to be made to do it.

    • @ARCTICLABSERVICES
      @ARCTICLABSERVICES  6 лет назад

      Nintropolis, heat might help but the plastic is pretty thick. The key is the metal tabs. Either stretching the plastic over them or pushing the tabs in or both. I would also use lube to help it slide out. Very very tight fit.

    • @ARCTICLABSERVICES
      @ARCTICLABSERVICES  5 лет назад

      you would need a multi-meter and check for continuity. check each wire from the plug to the PCB. but that wouldn't be the problem. the cords are basically USB cables. they only send data. if its only the joystick, it could be those wires or the module itself.

      If you are having problems, it could be because your gift card pieces are to thick or to thin. If they are to thin, it wont pull the outer part far enough away from the tab on the inside. If they are to thick, it will cause the outer part to tighten up. Making it more difficult to pull apart. But if its to thick, shave it down a little with a knife. Maybe a dab of lube could help.

      I, a long time ago, used a pretty hard gift card I had, and was able to cut the three pieces precisely so that they'd fit but, like yours, they were almost the exact thickness of the height of the slots and when pushed in the sides expanded to a point where it wouldn't allow the top to come free unless you, like you did in your video, used pliers to allow the top to free up which I couldn't do because I restore controllers and stressing the plastic, especially on transparent controllers, is a big no no since they'll turn white on the parts that are stressed. Either way it's still satisfying to see that damn thing come off so thanks for uploading. I needed this ;)

    this is absolutely impossible. dont even waste your time trying it. there are plastic bars blocking the card/shim from making contact with the black piece that it's supposed to push down. If you pause at 5:36, you can see the black bump you're supposed to push down, and it's completely blocked by about a 6mm thick plastic bar in every hole. I tried it on an atomic purple controller where you can kinda see through it and you can see what's happening while you're trying. It's a good way to get frustrated and break your plug housing, but you'll never even get close to doing what he shows in the video

      I would rather he takes his time and shows how to do it properly than trying to do it quickly and something be missed, this is a pain in the ass to do, and camera quality is good and it's easy to see everything, some people are just never pleased I guess.

      There is a difference between taking your time and making something take longer than it should. I don't know if he is intentionally stalling or if this is just his way of doing things. Either way it's too long by any reasonable standard.
      As for missing things, he should have written down the important parts ahead of time so he could look at his list as he made the video. The when he was done double checked that he mentioned everything.
      His video is literally a second over ten minutes. When a video is ten minutes or more youtubers get more ad revenue from youtube.

      @@skoronesa1 I hear what you're saying, but unless you can find another video on youtube of someone else doing this with better production quality, you can't really complain. Mario 64 for n64 had a shit camera but it was the first 3d game, so it got a pass. This is the only video I could find on how to replace the cable itself on both ends, not just replacing the entire cable altogether which is what most people do because it's easier to just do that, so he gets a pass imo.

      @@skoronesa1 Talk about it, be about it, if you're going to complain about him taking so long to do it then try putting out a video doing it in under 10 minutes.
