The final line is so strong.
It is indeed a very personal song, but at the same time enormously universal. This is definitely a Pink Floyd song just in name, this is really a Roger's song. He's one of the few artists that has spent a lifetime being true to his ideas. I respect that over everything. You don't have to agree with some of his perspectives, yet, most of the things he say are painfully true.
Wars are never honorable, people can be. Wars are always started by those who will never fight them...

"NEVER" is a might big word. Was the American revolution not an honorable cause? Was stopping Germany on their 2 attempts to conquer the world not honorable? I get your point.... war is horrible, but sometimes an absolute necessity... well at least the fighting of a war... especially defensive wars.

In my opinion, being an American I don’t think there’s one war that’s ever been necessary except World War II. This album is basically based on that. Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm and every war right now were and are all pretty much unnecessary. They’re all about money. There are so many more casualties in war that aren’t listed, yes over the course of history there’s millions of soldiers that have lost their lives. What’s not counted is the millions and millions of family members that suffer. War should always be the last option. Unfortunately it’s not. You two are absolutely beautiful people, beautiful souls. It’s people like you who make the world a beautiful place.
What about your civil war? Was that unnecessary?
My pops took the beaches of Normandy on the 4th day... he spoke of the previous 3 day massacre only twice, to me.
Being his 4th of 5 sons, and also 6 older sisters, we all were raised under the strict dicipline of a loving father, whose survival and combat experiences were "the guidance" of his traning in his household.
When pops went home to glory at age of 85, in 2005. My whole world changed... but i did not. The training and discipline still keeps me to this day... unafraid to face and overwhelm any and all oppressors and enemies... from a mean dog, to government of killers, and even the devil and his angels are in retreat, as the notes of my song waft across the meadow...just before dawn.

Very deep and meaningful song. The Final Cut album is the same, very emotional.
Loved The Final Cut
The album The Wall is basically the life and childhood of Roger Waters. Many elements and songs are based on childhood memories. This includes Mother, for example, but also this song. In this song, Roger Waters addresses the loss of his father. Everything that appears in the lyrics corresponds to the facts. His father really did die in the battle of Anzio. If you take a look at the album The Wall and the character of Roger Waters, you will recognize many parallels
My Grandfather was the only one left alive of 7 brothers,1 died from illness the rest in the war. He has long passed but the sadness of this is palpable.
It is through strength we keep the bullies at bay. As a retired military veteran of 30 years, we are there to keep the peace, it is only when our civilian leadership fails that we must fight. It is our hope that those we place in power are just and strive for resolution before conflict is required. It is only when they fail we are sent to fight. When given the right to vote, please vote wisely when placing our leadership in power, no soldier joins the military to die for their country but die due to poor diplomacy. My two cents, enjoy the freedom others have provided willingly. BTW love the reactions, keep up the good work, be safe.

Curious fact, although this song is not from the album The Wall, it was included in the movie The Wall.
In The Flesh, Run Like Hell and Waiting For The Worms played back to back like on The Wall album. Great stuff
Never seen this version of the video, so powerful, so beautiful, so sad all combined into a masterpiece.
EDIT there are absolutely no beauty in war, no winners just casuists, you you can say there are a winning side, but in reality there are not
FYI: 90 % of the P.F. "the Wall" was Roger Waters , as P.F was only had rights to 5 songs after Roger left. He got all of "The Final Cut" if you notice Pink Floyd got credit on this as " Pink Floyd played the music." Roger lost his dad just a few months old . Roger father lost his dad in WW! as a baby. @ sons never knowing their fathers. That is why Roger's anger went into parts of the "Wall & Final Cut" and the band not liking the direction they were going. A master piece is Rogers " Amused to Death" after seeing the Gulf War live on TV. ( as in amused to the world of people killing each other. "Live on TV". my next coffee will be some.
All my life I've listened and love the emotional attachment of Pink Floyd. But never, EVER realized Roger Waters middle name was "Fletcher" WOW!!!! now I understand over 40 years later how the song "Fletcher Memorial" came out to be... from the Time Gapped making of the "Final Cut" album, and "The Fletcher Memorial Home" song. Meaning that,..."David Gilmore" The lead singer of Pink Floyd disagreed with Roger Waters wanting to go make his own story in a song production as the "Final Cut" because it had something to do with the time space gap between the album before and the one after the "Final Cut" was released namely by R.W "this is what I heard and read by "David Gilmour" when interviewed. I lost the other details of some other facts though.
Dying for family and friends is one thing, but to die for another's greed or politics just will never make sense! I don't totally agree with all of Roger's views, but this album has brought me to tears more times than I can remember. I'm speaking of The Final Cut. Primarily a work of Roger's and one of Pink Floyd's most unappreciated albums.
I remember going to the first night of the movie The Wall in a movie theatre in Utrecht (Netherlands), and part of the surprise was getting a copy of the 7-inch-single with this song on it. I loved the cover art.

My grandfather Thomas fought in both world wars and was one of the lucky ones able to return. As gen Z we were told the stories and experienced the horrors of war, faulklands in which i had family members fight. We must not forget those who fought and thank them for the sacrifices they made for our freedom

3:19. I feel that reaction 100%. This is powerful stuff. War is a damned dirty business and it hurts to the core to even contemplate the horror humanity has wrought on itself over and over and over again. That said, thank God for those men who laid down their lives to defeat Adolf Hitler. In human history, no cause has ever been more just than the defeat of that evil regime.

When I heard this Floyd song in the context of WW2, I immediately assumed it was talking about the German Tiger Tanks breaking out to terrorize the allies. It had a 90mm cannon that could smash enemy tanks, and 100cm thick armor making it almost impervious to straight on shots from allied tanks. Low speed gas guzzlers though. Cool song, thanks for your reactions.
I think the bottom line is whether we believe any war is justified or not we have to remember all those who did not come home. Wars tend to be started by a few at the cost of so many.
the irony is that roger waters' father was a conscientious objector at the start of the war. he drove an ambulance and did other things to help the war effort that didn't involve killing which was against his deeply held christian beliefs. as the war dragged on he changed his mind and decided that there is a time when fighting against aggression is necessary. not long after going through basic training he was killed in battle.

I guess that depends on where you’re at on the globe. It also matters if you really want poverty on a global scale without the opportunity to ever change it.
You're such nice people, what kind of monster would want you to react to one of the saddest, terrible songs ever made? U.S. high school teachers won't even show this, despite the fact that it's true and accurate. Even the album was created without it because "this is too personal to Waters".

It epitomises the futility of war but it's a comment on class, deference and the warped mindset in Britain. "The Generals gave thanks to the other ranks"......the "Generals" will be public schoolboys who would have never seen combat and the "other ranks" are working class cannon fodder who they really don't give a fuck about. The other thing is the deference part - this country has this dysfunctional attitude/relationship to "Royalty" and all of that archaic nonsense, so the bit about King George being concerned when father had died and he sent mother a note - no he didn't, the court lackeys just sent a platitude piece of nothing to the dead soldiers, relying on the credulity of the masses that those people actually care and think about them.
This song is a damning account of the twisted perversion of the British class system and how it has corrupted people. It's a fantastic song but it is telling us things we should have wisened up to years ago - but this garbage is still propagated and swallowed to this day. We need to wake up.
