  • As a Design Engineer, I'm challenged to providing a better learning platform to Undergraduates in Nigeria, and the world at large. Hence, this is an all-comprehensive animation showing the major components of a turbocharger and how they combine to boost the power of C.I Engines.

    I am curious if any of you Holset turbocharger experts out there have any thoughts on the Holset turbo being used in the new 5.0L Cummins that Nissan is about to start selling. Apparently it is a different turbo then what Cummins was using on the commercial version of the 5.0L. I guess my questions is what potential upgrades can you predict or foresee for this turbocharger ? And two, what maintenance problems do you think might occur ? Is this a brand new turbocharger they are using, or is it one that has been around the block a few times ?? Also curious about the expected lifetime of such a turbocharger, meaning how often you should rebuild it and how many times you can rebuild it before having to replace the whole unit ? From what little I can see the bearings and seal on the turbine seem to be the most unreliable part of the design. I can only guess those 2 items would have to be replaced at 100,000 miles., and since you would have already disassembled the thing, you would go ahead and replace other parts even though they are not totally used up. Right ?

    ANIMATION excellent but fails to state what drives the turbine P1 T1 V1 = p2 t2 v2 adibiatic temp / volume relationship. What was shown is perpetual motion which wont happen and therefore not able produce a positive head pressure to the inlet manifold. Show in colour the effect of power from turbine increase due to the increased volume of the turbine exhaust and it will be more informative and accurate. Cheers.

    Hi, thanks, Question: I have some Synthetic oil bottles bought ahead,
    they are different grades, ¿It is safe to use any grade in a turbo
    engine?, and ¿Which is the best grade for next oil purchase?, ¿How you
    let cool down the turbo? and ¿how much time?, My car is a Malibu 2014
    2LTZ 2.0 Turbo.

      Eduardo Medina Apologies on the late reply. Kindly, consult your mechanic on the recommended oil grade.
      You cool your turbo by running idle after you hit top engine rpm. Say, for 45seconds to 2 minutes. There are turbo timers available to automatically do that for you.

    So you can put turbo to any car? Is it posible for kia picanto 1.0 to have a turbo?

      Yes but fitting a turbo charger is not a job for those who aren't trained mechanics, It is not as simple as bolting it onto the exhaust. A turbocharger requires an oil feed, larger fuel injectors, an aftermarket ECU and a thicker headgasket. this usually adds up to many thousands of dollars and usually isn't economically viable, my advice is to buy a vehicle with a turbo already fitted.
