My mother used to be an antique dealer and there was a lot of Victorian mourning jewelry around. She had several of these bracelets. Qn Victoria had lost her husband and went into mourning for the rest of her life. The jewelry traveled to Hawaii when King Kalakaua brought back a bracelet for his wife and one for his sister. When they went to the English queen's Jubilee, they brought back bracelets for their ladies in waiting and/or had them made in Hawaii using Hawaiian patterns done by Hawaiian artists. I may not have all of that correct, but
that is how I remember it from what my mom told me.
