Past 2 years of ownership, with the R-Design, 20-inch wheels, and Polestar Optimization. With those options, it's a louder, faster, more fun CUV to drive with zero issues and is indeed a wonderful interior experience. It IS the better place to be and you save 10k versus the Jag. Does great in Off-Road mode pulling itself out of a foot of snow too.
Just bought the xc40 R-Design for my wife and she loves it. Everything said in this video about the xc40 is true.

Great review!! I own a 2020 Jaguar E-pace R-Dynamic P250. I test drove the Volvo XC40, and just thought it looked and drove more like a family SUV. The Jag is a more of a sports car, and looks and performs much better than the Volvo. I paid $39k for my E-pace R-Dynamic S almost fully loaded. It is red with ivory interior, and came equipped with 20" wheels and a lot of extras because it was a loner car that I purchased from a Jag dealership. It had 5k miles on it and looked and drove like new, and also came with the full warranty and servicing! I actually look forward to driving the car every day, and it is stellar on the highway. It gets away from me sometimes driving around town because I like to drive in sport mode, but damn it is so much fun to drive and is such a beautiful SUV!!
I've never owned a Volvo, and I do not own an E-Pace, but in case you are wondering where the extra 500lbs comes from in the Jag, I can venture a guess. I have a 2012 Jaguar XK. It was my first Jag and over the years I have learned that it is, by far, the most overbuilt vehicle I have ever owned. What I mean is that the thickness of the steel when you look under the hood, the heft of the bolts when you service something, the size of the suspension components (THE LARGEST LOWER CONTROL ARMS I HAVE EVER SEEN---EVEN BIGGER THAN THOSE ON MY CORVETTE), etc. I had the AC serviced and the tech showed me the cap from the service port (yes, the cap); he said "I only see this kind of cap on Bentleys, Rolls Royce, or Mercedes S". The push clamp on the leather strap is so robust, I have to use TWO thumbs to clasp it when my seatbelt got twisted and I had to untwist it. Like I said, I've never seen an E-Pace up close, but if they build all Jags like they do the XK, that extra 500lbs is due the thing being built like a tank...
Just got my XC40 R design. Could not be happier. A woman is the chief interior design, you say? Really not suprising, she did a very good job, well thought out, intelligent interior both functional, entertaining with high comfort level! Volvo always ranks high in security and longevity, a no brainer!
Love my 2020 XC40 t4 fwd r design! It’s super comfy! And makes long road trips and commutes so enjoyable!

I never considered buying a Volvo until I listened to one of your podcasts and ended up buying a used 2010 Volvo XC60. My wife and I like driving it very much and would consider buying another Volvo when the time comes for us to buy a new or used car. Thanks for your review! 👍😎👍

Try the XC40 with the Polestar optimization software upgrade. It changes a few of the dynamics of the car to where it’s more fun on the back road. More power is put to the rear wheels.

I know it's not a consideration in LA but up north the E-Pace with the cold climate pack, i.e. heated steering wheel and windshield etc might be a great selling point. It is for me at the moment on the shores of Lake Ontario in Feb. :) Another thing to consider if purchasing might be the Jag warranty is an extra year @ 5 years/60,000 miles although for me personally leasing is the only way these things come close to fitting my budget.
Wow, great Vid guys. I've never seen you before on YT, love the way you produced the Vid! love that you were both VERY objective about your opinions! I just purchased a fully optioned XC40, so far I love it. I traded in my 2018 Audi S6 that I ordered from Germany (MSRP $90,000). I got a Job in sales and logically I had to change my everyday driver, all things considered I needed a somewhat fuel efficient vehicle, plus had to consider tire costs & maintenance costs. Not to mention repairs when I up needing those on that S6! But also, in sales I need to think about what badge I have on the grille when I'd be driving up in to my accounts. I was going to get an Audi Q3 but the Volvo is reviewed much better than the Q3, and the Audi is still an Audi, and that might still be a bit douchey to pull up in. I think unfortunately the Jaguar would come across the same way. Volvo was perfect for me, I get some of the luxury I crave and I'm accustomed to with out the yuppy badge. One major thing you guys totally glossed over, and usually I don't care about fuel efficiency but in my situation I do now... the Volvo has notably better fuel economy than the Jag, on top of being much less expensive. So for a sales rep, the Volvo is perfect imho!!

Well Tisha needs to do something about the XC40 Inscription Pro seats. I’ve had mine about a month now and it’s going back because the seat pad is so thin, I’m sitting on a solid plate. It’s an issue being raised on many forums. And oddly the Inscription Pro orders from mid 2020 were delayed due to the seats. Unless it can be fixed, I’m rejecting the car.
Also, I think the XC40 will age much better. It has a Defender’ish look about it and that’s timeless.
Good review. We are in the market for a small CUV for my wife to drive, and both these vehicles are on our list. I’m guessing that both these vehicles are at the lower end on the reliability scale, but we have never used Consumer Reports as a buying guide. Having said that, it is the Jaguar that is moving the needle for me out of these two. I think it’s a design that is just going to age better of the two. The Jaguar will make me want to look back at it after it is parked, and that’s important to me.
I recommend 20 inch black wheels with flat red paint on the Jag.
One thing not discussed was the air conditioning. Test drove a 2019 e-pace and a 2020 xc40 back to back on 100 degree day and the xc40’s AC just couldn’t get the car cool.
I definitely agree about the cost of the Jag being up there, but because it was a 2019 in the summer of 2020 I was able to get it for almost 10K off MSRP thus it cost less than XC.
It’s not as fun to drive as the car it replaced a 2007 Acura RDX with its supper handling all wheel drive and not as responsive when you want to go from 60 to 80 MPH, but it is close. The dynamic mode does make a difference but when you normally just have it in comfort mode as that is default mode, and you only need the power when you need it, sometimes hitting the throttle while in comfort mode it just doesn’t go. Of course I’m comparing this to the RDX so it might not be a fair comparison, the RDX was always ready to take off. Probably would have ended up getting another RDX but the wife was in love with this car (mainly driven by her)and the 10K off, swayed me.
this is a huge deal and one of reasons, living in DFW and being mostly accustomed to lexus A/Cs and knowing my Dad's merc and our old VW's never had great A/C, the E-Pace's is stellar. Either bad timing or a huge omen, but when I test drove the XC-40 T5 R-Design model i came close to getting, the AC wasnt functioning in May Dallas weather, which then post that, The E-pace performed and my father just loved it more. Im very happy with my CPO E-pace 2019 P250 S purchase. One huge thing to mention is net net, once markdowns taken in, the price differential isnt much with a better warranty on Jag.
I too bought the xc40 .. I just trusted the Volvo brand better .. the jag looks way better... and the seats are more comfy.... after driving the xc40 r design for 6 months .. I think I'm moving over to the baby jag...

The Macan is the most sporty and car like, and likely the most reliable. (Don’t get the base engine). The Evoque is the most unique with the nicest interior, and the FPace has the most space. Depends on what is most important to you. Thanks for watching!

The Jag looks soooo much better in red, white, or silver. That blue is just horrible. OK, I am biased I have a red one :). Absolutely love it, it is really fun to drive. My wife has a Volvo and loves it but it really isn't anywhere near as sporty.

The Jaguar E Pace has been refreshed for 2021 compared to the model shown here. There are some minor exterior changes and some much needed changes to the interior and infotainment system.
I really love XC40 and V60 but the shape of central unit...It's so sad~ Now, I buy the E-Pace last week.

I Felt that Steering wheel dia was a little smaller…
And the Vehicle Suspension felt rough
&the Back seats are not comfortable
& Arm rest and driver seat door rest has to be designed better
I can't help but look at all that dust on the piano black center stack on the Volvo. Glossy surfaces only look good when clean and that center stack will never be clean for more than a few minutes.

I liked the XC40 R-Design (as did my wife). But the too numb steering and relatively high price pushed me back to lease a new VW GTI. For a couple the GTI provides a much more engaged driving experience, just enough cargo room for us, good features, and design.

I don't know. I can't stand the, what I call, unnecessarily tall car phase the world seems to go through led by the USA, it seems. These aren't SUVs. These are crossovers. I guess CUV is OK too but a lot of them have compromised utility. I enjoy listening to your reviews and this is well done.
So, the Jag has that upswept belt line small windows look that's supposed to make a vehicle look sleeker. And it does in certain respects. But look at it bottom up and it's a lot of body and not a lot of window area. Thankfully, the interior is a light color, and that opens it up. But, it's a lot of too much old school in the dash and interior environment. The Volvo interior is this dark black and that's the look of Volvo lately. But it's more modern if very familiar at this point. Even if you get a color the headline is black. But the Volvo has somewhat larger windows. It's stubby and tall and OK for a format I don't care for.
Bottom line is, instead of picking the more fun to drive sporting vehicle as number one you focused in on what the format offers for buyers in this segment. So, yeah, the Volvo makes sense. But the XC40 is a much better vehicle in its EV form. And that's not because it is a good EV. It's not, relatively poor range and aerodynamics. It's a great car as an EV because it elevates the entire experience, the whole thing is more linear and much smoother.
I'd like to see Jag make sedans and sports cars primarily. But these bar stool height, 5-door hatchbacks on stilts are all the rage. I sure hope there comes a time when that's no longer the case. As for Volvo, loved them as wagons.

That makes no sense. Jaguar is owned by an Indian company and Volvo is owned by a Chinese company. You're inconsistent (not to mention, silly and wrong). Either it is Chinese vs Indian or Swedish (it's actually a European/American designed car made in Belgium) vs. English.
I think in 15 or 20 years people will understand that screens are not a good thing.. and people will embrace a simple car with a manual trans and simple simple controls.
I am not a typical car person in this age of piano black glossy plastic.i dont want turbos. I like manual transmissions. I dont want a screen interface. I dont want paddle shifting or cvt. I dont want driving modes...dont need navigation or lane assist.. i dont care about infotainment or seat warmers or computers.
What is an affordable 356 speedster or 1970 porsche 911...what is the modern yet reliable e36 m3 ???

You're wrong in 15-20 years the older generation will start dying out and the younger generation prefers technology.
I drove a 1975 Volvo with seat warmers. And they had computers as well. Navigation is very helpful on dark nights when you don't know where you are going.
I agree about screens not being all that great. We interact with them too much and they're not that big a deal to see in automobiles.
@@hazmatcinemaxxx The so-called "older" generation preferred technology as well overall. Technology is a moving target. Don't act like all old people don't care for technology. Old people had technology too, it's just now it is older technology. In 10 years, what's latest now is old technology. But not all young people want the latest/greatest tech either.
