Great match that I honestly forgot. I guess overshadowed by the finals against Sharapova. We tend to forget how good Mauresmo was. I liked her game at the time, but in retrospect it was really spectacular. She had so much variety and could hit hard as well.

Yeah, I've always enjoyed Mauresmo's elegant all-court game which I thought was underrated. Sadly, she was overshadowed by another great one-hander, Henin.

Truly Mauresmo was a great player , well put together as a player , and you can see the high level of tennis played by both players !!! But Serena was just too awesome to beat !!!....one of the great matches !!!

      Her volleys were exceptional.
I still think they are the best. Better than Henin’s or Hingis’s.
What’s also interesting is that she lost two semies in a row pulling out a real fight. She was close both times against Serena and Davenport. I even believe if she’d been less defensive (sometimes her slices were producing too little effect against big hitters on grass) she could have taken either of those two Wimbledons. Great times, so many players competing at a good level.

I really miss the playing style variaties in women's game. We used to have crafty players Henin and Mauresmo as the top players challenging aggresive baseliners in the 2000s such as Lindsay, Williams sisters, Mary Pierce, and Maria. We also had someone in the middle in terms of playing style like Kim. On the 2010s onwards, either you are aggresive or like a wall from the baseline.

Is not it strange that some of the comments try to downplay the superiority of the Williams sisters? They win matches comfortably against top players, so what do these people say???? Oh, their opponents could or should have won, or the sisters got lucky, or the losers are better players than the sisters!!!! I find it very inappropriate for people to do these things.🌹

Great match. Amelie was a lovely player to watch, her game an interesting contrast to Serena's. For me personally, such differences have always made for the most exciting games - just think back to 70s/80s Evert - Navratilova. Different time period of course but the same principle applies. I always thought Serena's game greatly improved when she was forced to think more against the touch-players, so Mauresmo, Henin etc, rather than simply trying to hit through another baseliner mirroring her own game. This is where I believe she could really have stepped up a gear further - if Henin and Co' had stuck a round it might have made for an enduring rivalry, each forcing the others to adapt and improve - something the current women's game sorely needs. Lovely match to watch once again - thanks for posting JO :-)
