In the cave scene, Luke basically sees what is obsessing him. When Luke asked Yoda what he will find in the cave, Yoda answers "Only what you bring with you". By giving in to his anger and hatred and "killing" Vader, Luke submitted to the pull of the Dark Side. Him seeing himself inside Vader's helmet is basically the Force telling him : "This is what you will become if you continue in this way."

I was in my twenties when The Empire Strikes Back was released, so I had more information than a child would, and I had already heard a rumor that Vader was Luke's father (considering there was no internet back then, the speed with which gossip spread was pretty impressive), so my reaction was more like "Damn, the rumor nerds actually spoiled this!" Conversely, I also remember a pre-release report that said that "The Empire Strikes Back" was just a deliberately corny working title as an homage to the old adventure serials that inspired George Lucas and that the movie would be released under a different title that was being kept secret. There was a ton of misinformation (as well as deliberate disinformation to bury any actually accurate leaks), so even if you heard something, you generally didn't believe it.

I've watched a lot of people react to the Star Wars movies, and honestly your ability to follow along what's happening is on point. I'm often tripped out by native English speakers who can't seem to follow the story or figure out what's happening, while you're here apologizing for English not being your first language but still following along perfectly. I've often wondered if younger people just don't have the attention spans anymore that would allow them to get these movies, but here you are proving that wrong and restoring my faith in young people. Also, at the cave on Dagobah, Luke was being tested. He had to confront evil without falling to the dark side, but instead he reacted with fear and aggression. This is why Luke saw himself as Vader, and why Yoda later says that he failed at the cave.

I agree. Too many people dont seem to be paying attention or forget something they just learned, but English isnt even Dasha's first language and she gets the subtleties. In fact, I think she's the first reactor to make the relationship between Luke lifting rocks and Vader crushing throats...and she noted that Luke is lifting more stuff and heavier stuff with each scene. Well played, Dasha!
I also like how her questions about the cave, the father reveal, Han's uncertainty....they are all completely the same ones you'd see back in 1980 when talking it over in the schoolyard or playground.

@@slchance8839 Dude, I saw this in the theater when I was 9 years old and the Luke/Vader thing was emotionally devastating. I kept asking my stepdad if it were really true on the way home from the movie. He's like, "I don't know...but it seems true to me." I'd rank it up there with finding out what death was by reading, "Charlotte's Web," and discovering that Santa Claus wasn't real. On the other hand, watching Han and Leia make out suddenly awakened an interest in girls for me, so I suppose it all evened out in the end.

@@rawkmode6315 thanks for the response: it was like a trip down memory lane with someone i've never met but have known all my life.
Now that you mention it, Charlotte's Web was **my** intro to death, too. The thought of the movie to this day has a cold, chilly, sad spot in my brain.
For me, while shocked about the father comment, I was more disturbed by the dismemberment of his hand. At that time, i"d never seen a hero get maimed like that. Not a wound...he lost his hand...down a pit!
Even with the fake hand, I kept thinking that at night, going to bed, after he brushes his teeth, he probably looks at the fake hand or takes it off or something....for pretty much every night for the rest of his life.
      horrifying.
And on top of that... he seemed to be only one of 2 people in the whole galaxy (1980) with a lightsaber...and he lost it!
It's easier to get back your hand than a lightsaber.
Empire to me was loss on top of loss on top of loss.
What an emotional rollercoaster for a child of the 70s in 1980.
The more reactors I see, the more i can kinda relive that early memory.

Well it is the second movie released. Fifth chronologically
Yes, it is basically a snow monster. It’s called a wampa
This takes place three years after New Hope, so they’ve had a lot of adventures with each other
Limb cutting is a Star Wars tradition. You’ll be seeing plenty of it.
Yes, the tauntaun died from the cold. The planet can get too cold even for them
Vader’s “lounge” is a meditation chamber. He can breath without his mask when sealed inside it
What do you mean can he fly? Like with the force? By himself? Not really. He could do really high jumps, or slow his descent to the ground, but he would need to train. If he were in space though, with no gravity restriction, yeah, and it would help to have something to push off of or pull toward
If the water can get in their systems it would be bad for droids
Yeah, Vader doesn’t wear that suit just to look cool. He needs it to stay alive after some inhuries. What are those injuries? You’ll find out eventually
Baby Yoda is NOT Yoda as a baby. _The fans_ called him baby Yoda because he didn’t have a name at first and we don’t know the name of Yoda’s species. His official name was The Child. His real name you’ll find out when you watch The Mandalorian
Telekinesis, the ability to physically manipulate things with your mind. Like levitating a ship or choking someone
That was a vision Luke had in the cave and it was indeed him in the mask. It was telling him if he attacked without emotional control he could fall to the dark side.
Echuta has never been given a translation. We know it’s a very rude insult. It’s considered too inappropriate to translate
When the ruling government that destroys a planet for a _demonstration_ (when a prisoner was _complying_ with their demands) shows up, you do what they say
The Vader twist was kept secret from pretty much everyone. The only ones who knew were George Lucas, James Earl Jones (Vader’s voice), and the director. They told Mark Hamill right before they filmmed the scene. For everyone else, the line they thought it was gonna be was “Obi-Wan killed your father.”
They didn’t reattach his hand, it’s a prosthetic, with synthetic skin.

Et Chutaa is Huttese. The closest translation is "The fuck you want?"
Hutts are vicious gangsters and cutthroat deal makers. In making deals and negotiating with Hutts, it is pretty much the opening line. It places the person saying it in a position of power, as it is quite rude and demeaning to the other party. Many trade deals are made in Huttese, as the language is especially suited for deal making, and quite colorful in it's insults and descriptions. It also dodges censors, similar to how on Firefly the cast would curse in chinese for the same reason.

Some comments here don’t fully explain Luke’s failure at the cave.
Yoda tells Luke that the cave is a “domain of evil”, but tells him he must go in.
Like can feel the darkness in it. He grabs his gun belt with his lightsaber but Yoda tells him “Your weapons. You will not need them.” Luke looks at Yoda with an expression of ‘you’ve got to be kidding, I’m not going in there unarmed’. Yoda shrugs and Luke enters.
Inside the cave Luke encounters something that appears to him to be Darth Vader. He ignores his lightsaber without a word, battles, and uses his skills he has so far learned to cut down the Vader-thing. But the face inside turns out to be Luke.
It is the practical version of the lesson that Yoda was teaching. Jedi use the force only for knowledge and defence, never attack. He also tells Luke “Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, as it did Obi Wan’s apprentice.” which Luke knows was Darth Vader.
It was Luke deciding to bring weapons into the cave that caused the confrontation. We don’t know what would have happened if he didn’t bring weapons, but we do know what happened when he did.

I remember still how I felt sitting in the theatre with my wife and seeing these movies revealed for the first time. In your case, not only is it a first time, but you come from a totally different cultural background [well, maybe not "totally" - my family was from Finland and though I was born in Canada, I had a bit of Finnish culture in my upbringing] I love seeing how you react - it is so fresh and pure.

When they were making this movie, only a very small circle knew that Darth Vader was going to say "I am your father." Even most of the cast didn't know. The script that they were given said "Obi-Wan killed your father." James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) were among the few that knew.

Dasha, you apparently didn't quite get the symbolism of the vision of Darth Vader in the cave.
But I'm thinking of a director from your own country: Andrei Tarkovsky. In particular the movies Solaris and Stalker. They are full of symbolism, scenes open to interpretation, maybe happening more in the minds of the characters than in reality. Compared to those, this is fairly straightforward.
(Edit) It's clear that Luke "failed" in the cave by bringing his lightsaber when Yoda told him not to. The vision of Vader was a lesson, but by showing Luke's own face in Vader's helmet, he was warned of the danger of following the dark path. It might also be a premonition of what happened to his father.

Seeing the Dagobah Darth Vader fight scene: here is MY interpretation. When Luke attacked and killed Vader, it was an act of aggression. Anger. Feelings which lead to the Dark Side. When the mask was removed, revealing Luke's face, it basically implied, "this is what you will turn into". Kind of like an eye opener.

Part of what makes Vader's character so effective, in Empire, is that he only kills Imperial officers that are shown to be incompetent.
Officer Piett's character fails multiple times in capturing the Millenium Falcon, but Vader never kills him. Piett's character is separated from the other officers in that it shows him only trying to do what Vader asks him to do, to the best of his ability.
This lets the audience know that Vader is not a maniac murderer, but instead, is simply hyper-focused on achieving goals.

If you rewatch the beginning of the first movie there's a part with Luke's aunt and uncle who he lives with if you'll remember where they say the following:
Aunt: "He has too much of his father in him."
Uncle: "That's what I'm afraid of."
In the cave with the false Vader where it has Luke's face that's another, even bigger clue, that Vader is Luke's father and the fact that Luke's immediate instincts were to go for the kill was showing if he gives in to those impulses like his father did he will end up just like him. Like father, like son. It's not just Vader's powers he inherited but also his passion and his will to win which could be manipulated to turn him to the dark side.

Although never completely explained, the scene in the cave seems to be a Jedi test. The padwan or apprentice is sent to face an illusion created by what the dark side brings on him. That's why Yoda answers to the question what is in there, "only what you bring with you". What happens in there does not have a real consequence to the plot, only to Luke's character, how he seems himself, how prepared or unprepared he is, how much he sees of Darth Vader in him, or something like it.

Hoth outside scenes were filmed in Norway for most part, and some of the Rebel soldiers fighting in the trenches are in fact from the Norwegian army who helped with the logistics!
Kenobi isn't really alive anymore you know... he just transfered his conciousness into the Force itself.
That swamp is 100% artificial made in a studio, a bloody good work.
Episode 3 is where you see what happened to Darth Vader to have him wear this suit and mask...
Jedi traditionnally start trainiong younglings before they experience fear too much. They take the children from their families around 3 years old.
Baby Yoda is just a nickname people gave the small character in Mandalorian series because his real name wasn't mentioned at the time. But it's not Yoda, Mando series take place after Return of the Jedi...
The Cave scene is a vision Luke had about his eagerness to find trouble and potential consequences. In short he failed to face his fears of being drawn to the Dark Side, he has still much to learn.
You would go for Luke, hm? Judging you didn't even look at the camera saying that, I can assume you are lying about that.
The story of Lando's ship going to Han is told in Solo, A SW story.
We don't know what "Itchuta" leans but for 3PO reacting like this, it must be a terrible slur.
Suggestions: Back to the Future trilogy, Lord of the Rings/Hibbit trilogies, Indiana Jones trilogies for a start...

Yoda's speach pattern was designed to be alien or child-like in order to keep the audience interested in a bunch of long scenes without a lot of action. The sentence structure makes it so you have to pay closer attention to understand what he was saying. If you ask me, it was a brilliant touch. Irvin Kershner (the director) and Frank Oz (the voice and master puppeteer of Yoda) absolutely nailed it.

Without spoiling Episode 6, the confusing scene in the cave is a warning to Luke that he is just as vulnerable to influence and power of the dark side as Darth Vader. Episode 5 initiates a "cyclical, traumatic object lesson", then Episode 6 contains a call-back scene where this lesson is applied. Episode 2 then contains another call-back scene which connects to the Episode 5 & 6 scenes bringing Yoda's lesson full circle.
