My first one, was probably Red Baron from early 90s, then Aces of the Pacific, Jane's ATF, WW2 fighters, USAF, Warbirds, Dawn of Aces, MS Combat flight simulator, Attack Squadron, IL2 Sturmovik, Cliffs of Dover, Rise of Flight, Battle of Stalingrad. they made loads of great games in the late 90s - especially Jane's. Then all of the sudden, they dies out, and IL2 took over the serious combat, MS flight sim took the civilian side, and War thunder took the arcade type games.

The cannons were not "synced" up to the propeller or engine. There was a Cam-like device that would stop the gun from firing when the prop was approaching the bullet/prop collision position (for lack of a better description coming to my mind at the moment).

As some have already mentioned, the is "a part two" of sorts, in that the Devs have integrated as "Flying Circus" into the IL2-Great Battles series. And I love to see, that recently they put more focus on Flying Circus. It uses the same engine as ROF, but cranked up to 11 and is slowly but surely getting the Map and the early planes done. Right now it's focused on the late war, but Vol.3 will bring stuff from 1916 and will finish the map.
But just this week I went back to a little career in ROF and I have to say, at least for now ROF holds up and does stuff, that isn't yet in FC. Not just planes, but little details in the career and the entire channel map (I hope they will integrate the channel map into the western front map of FC at some point, make it one giant map, like in wings over flanders fields)
Especially given the low entry cost (even if you buy every plane for ROF, it's like 30 bucks in sales, compared to like 30-50 per FC volume, of wich there are three and probably more to come), ROF is up to this day a good starting point.
It can be a bit clunky at points, doesn't look as brilliant as FC, but still gorgeous in the right moments, but you can try it for free (it even works decent with a game pad, after a little tweaking, that's how I started, although it's much better with a joystick and all that), it's just 15Gb, doesn't need a powerful PC to run, is dirt cheap in sales and just as immersive as FC (doesn't suport VR, tho).
So even if I don't play it as often anymore, since FC is picking up pace, I can still highly recommend it and some times even over FC!

Also the Camel was a British build, the only thing able to fly the Americans had when joining the war, was the hot air coming out of their mouths when promising 20k american build planes by the end of 1917. The US flew French and British machines for the entire war. The US air force (not THE air force, it wasn't founded yet, but like the army and navy air troops) really was nothing more but a shit show up until WW2 forced their hand to cut the crap and git gut. (I'm talking on a organisation level, NOT about the skill or bravery of the pilots)

My first flight sim was actually a C-64 game called "Chuck Yeager´s Advanced Flight Trainer". When I was like 12 or 13 years old I spent my entire summer holidays going through half the city, where I worked five days a week cleaning the shop windows of a big retail business building, so that I could earn the money to buy that C-64 and the simulator, which was my first game ever.

The first flight game that I played was WW2: Wings Of Duty on the tablet. It looked terrible, controls were wonky, and sounded bad but when I was younger I thought it was a amazing game. It really kickstarted me into playing flight simulators today. I mostly played the P-40 in that game and caused me to love that aircraft. Now I play DCS and IL-2 because my interest in these amazing flight simulators, and aviation as a whole, was all because of a terrible mobile game lol.
