I believe you have to completely clear cut an island before metal detecting works. So that takes MUCH longer than using the keys and maps....
Seems like that would take way longer.
@@pixeldeuce It definitely does. If you have a squad of people with you it might be worth it. Or if your main goal is to collect plants and tree seeds. Or if you have the silver pocket watch. But there's no guarantee there will actually be a chest on the island you clear. If I do it, I generally only do the landing island. There are usually 2-4 chests there in my experience.

@pixeldeuce I usually use a chainsaw. That gets everything including trees.
