The pioneers of techno and electropop. Kraftwerk inspired and influenced generations of bands and musicians.

I include Tangerine Dream in that, and I think they were around earlier.
But I like both groups TD even more.

The instruments they're using here are not laptops or synths, but a mix of various electronic instruments compiled into one custom-made package: various types of synthesisers, sequencers, custom-made miniature keyboard, effects processors, samplers and laptops. This live vid was taken from their "Minimum Maximum" DVD (I'd recommend "Radioaktivitaet" or "Die Mensch Maschine" from it btw). If you'll continue reacting to songs from that release you'll see some better shots at what they're doing (for that you may want to check out the song titled "Autobahn").
I've never seen any reactions before to Kraftwerk btw (I don't really like reaction vids in general tbh), but it was a nice experience to check this one out. I'd wish only for more commentary about the song, but that would fall into reaction/review category I suppose? Anyway, it was nice seeing that people are still enjoying Kraftwerk (which is my 2nd fav band btw). Cheers!

I've seen them live and they can jam on those machines. So the music is "performed" live.

Ralf does use an analog synth, but nowdays even a 100 euro phone can simulate any synth that ever existed.

Both songs are from the 1981 album Computer World. They had another really great song on that album (Computer Love) that was about online dating (in 1981!)

Hey Travis! You meant the Texas Instruments "Speak N' Spell", they sampled & modified the toy for the original song on The Computer World LP from 1981. They even ended up working with Texas Instruments for sounds on their "Pocket Calculator" single from the same album. Just love your reactions to this.

The statement in this song was so far ahead of it's time, and frighteningly relevant in this day and age. It blows my mind that way back in 1981, Kraftwerk knew that 20-30 years in the future the civilised world would be run entirely through computers.... and that large, powerful organisations could find ways to exploit that.

Speak and Spell - and yes, the voice comes from it's brother "math ... something". I believe it was from Texas Instruments.
The Laptops: They switched to mostly virtual synths some years ago - before that they went on tour with their complete studio. Back then their stage looked a LOT like the bridge of the Enterprise. But in the end that became too much trouble for them when technology had advanced far enough to be able to put a complete studio into one computer... Languages in Numbers... German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The original of Numbers/Computerworld was released in 1981 - and the "Numbers beat" from Karl Bartos was Combined with the Melody from "Trans Europe Express" from 1977 by Afrika Bambaata and became one of the first Hiphop hits. :) Music History. :)

    • @commanderkruge

If you consider the tune is from 81 - when Homecomputers were JUST beginning to come out, when there was no Internet - this was almost prophetic. :D

@@mileythighless5094 no. The "brother" of the Speak and Spell wasn't "Speak and Spell".
It was a device doing math with a different name.

In fact they play live. They generally manipulate sounds and effects. If you compare this song with other concerts of the same tour in other countries, you will see that it never sounds the same and that they improvise both sounds and effects continuously. As for the languages of numbers, I think they are English, French, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and German.

Ralf Hütter on the far left does keyboards, sound manipulation and vocals. Next to Ralf is . Henning Schmitz. Henning also does keyboards and sound manipulation. Fritz Hilpert does live effects and sound manipulation. Falk Grieffenhagen is responsible for all videos on the screens. Falk can manipulate video live on the fly live. Kraftwerk does have a lot of music pre sequenced on laptops or tablets. Kraftwerk does do parts live. The three on the left can manipulate and change the sequences live. Ralf and Fritz use midi controller keyboards for live playing and manipulation

I have been lucky enough to see 5 live performances by Kraftwerk. At one of the venues they played the manager stated afterwards they were ordered to remove all the lighting and sound equipment and wirings as Kraftwerk would only play if they could install all their own equipment.

  • @timschulz9563
    @timschulz9563 3 года назад +3

They don't pretend to make the music live. Almost everything is prerecorded (as MIDI probably and not as a sound file) and they can adjust some parameters. Some parts/melodies are played live completely. If they don't move they aren't doing anything.

The mind blowing thing is that this album came out in 1981, and like another song on this album, _"Computer Love,"_ they were decades ahead of their time, predicting that computers would control so much of our world. The other song I mentioned deals with online dating -- nearly 30 years before online dating was a thing.
