A Perfect Time To Roll More and Develop Mental Toughness for BJJ

  • Today's video comes from Alex who's curious why we have to roll again with the same person after we submit them during a roll. He says that in a competition we wouldn't roll with the person again, it would be 1 and done. But in the gym he beats someone and then is too tired to execute the same attacks again in a 2nd round.
    In the video I explain why we roll again. I mean the main reason is it's training and not competition.
    But even from a standpoint of being focused on BJJ competitions. It's super important to roll in situations where you're fatigued and unable to easily use your best Jiu-jitsu techniques. Because as any competitor will agree. At some point you're going to find yourself in the middle of the mat exhausted and still have time on the clock and an opponent pressing forward. And while this is happening you'll experience a sort of mental battle where 1 side of you tells you to push forward while the other says back off.
    To conquer this you've got to become comfortable with the uncomfortable.

      If I don't go to class for a week or more I start feeling like I am top shit the feeling like no mf can beat me. Then I step on the mat and get my ass handed to me.
      Nothing feels better then a 30min quite ride home.

    One of my coaches once said "champion training" starts only once you're tired. Going further than you thought is so satisfying. Practicing technique while exhausted is also really good for muscle memory. (He also drilled it into us not to display our exhaustion even when we definitely were. lol)

    Why keep rolling after you get the tap? what else do you want to do, sit there and stare into each others eyes uncomfortably for 4 1/2 min? What if you tap everyone out in 15 min? are you just going to head home?

      That's some quick development my friend. 3 months between stripes seems about the minimum a solid gym will promote.

      @@badxradxandy well I've heard that, many instructors worth their salt, give promotions based on how good they believe you'll be ultimately. There's a ton of reasons for promotions, but that's another once that I've heard. So the longer it takes to get a promotion, likely the higher your instructor thinks your ceiling is. Also it gives them an overall indication of your progress. My instructor watches us constantly, and talks with the head instructor and advance belts all the time. Long story short enjoy the white belt beginnings of your bjj journey, it's over before you know it.

      I am at 10months with 3 stripes. But I show up every day I think I skipped maybe 3 or 4 days since I started. I am scared to get blue belt. When I roll with blue i get smashed bad, don’t think I am ready for it

    I'm glad I compete in the Masters 4 or seniors division. We're always tired and there's usually only a couple of us.

    Physical exhaustion can sometimes be the best way to force yourself into using more skillful technique vs strength or speed to get the win.

    You’re right. There’s no win or lose when it comes to training, there’s only improvement. Exhaustion is a key component to helping us understand technique over strength.

      I agree to certain level. At a certain point of fatigue technique will eventually fall apart and you start engraining bad technique or risk injuries. My powerlifting experience taught me that big time. I've had a heavy squat smack me in the head from being tired and form breaking down. 405 hurts even if the safety straps catch the bulk of the bar's weight. I remember Brian Alshrue saying when doing training when form broke down that was it. He didn't want to engrain bad reps.

      @@MrStrongBro it's not bad if you see it coming. Like you know when things start getting heavy if you aren't coming back up. The worst is the one that comes out of nowhere. Last test out I had 425 on the bar or basically rpe 8. No idea what happened but I got folded over and took a knock to the upper spine. That sucked worse than just missing a rep and seeing it coming and you can brace for impact.

    Many people are encouraging this guy to keep training while exhausted to build endurance. That's great.
    But there are times where it is okay to take a rest. Sit out a roll if you feel horrible. No one wants to see someone throw up on the mats, or pass out due to exhaustion, or get injured, or get frustrated. It takes time to learn how to pace yourself, and be efficient. He will learn in time. At the end of the day you do it to have fun so if it's not fun then that's no good.
    The fellow asking the question sounds like a beginner who is kind of intense and going all out, 100% all the time, doesn't quite yet know how to pace himself, to be fluid and efficient so he ends up gassing out within two minutes. We are all guilty of having done that as white belts.
    You watch black belts roll and they are smooth. They are not always going 100%, they are going like 50%, then 100% for just a few seconds, then once again bring it down once the scramble is over. Pedro Sauer said that he rolls at 20% of his overall effort because if he can roll at 20% during training then the moves will be even easier when he needs to go full out (e.g. if he has to use it for self-defence).
    Famous MMA coach, Firas Zahabi, has said that if you are getting tired and exhausted during everyday training that you are going far too hard and just cheating yourself because you will need to take rest days which is lost opportunity for training. He says elite athletes only go full out when they are in training camp weeks prior to a big competition. For everyday level training they keep it down a few notches so they don't get injured and able to train everyday.

    Some of these comments are savage and I love it. If anyone wants to develop mental toughness without the wear and tear on the body try getting a small personal sauna. So many times I have broken in the sauna and it’s helped me tremendously on the mats. Plus, it helps build cardio and heal the body.

    I started to ease up at purple belt. I've learned to flip the switch at competitions and keep it chill on the mats.

    I have a similar story during a wrestling tournament. I just finished one of my matches, shook the opponents, got my hand raised and walked across the mat to wrestle my next match. Didn't even have time to put my shirt on. Just walked right to the center of the other mat and got right to it. Gotta be able to perform even while you are tired. Just how it goes sometimes

    I remember roughly 8 years ago I was in my first match in the unlimited weight category. The giant I was fighting managed to get his hooks in while I was turtled up. I remember giving up in my mind and allowing myself to be flattened to the mat. I refused to tap but I didnt fight him either but as I lay there I remember my voice in my head saying "what are you doing? This isnt you. You dont give up.). I was able to fight back to turtle and eventually made it to full mount. I lost on points but my team mates were impressed I managed to get him off me.

    In my country we have a judo-competition simply called Shiai, where you can score points required for your black belt exam. You stay on the mat as long as you win. Even if your gas tank is fully empty after the first fight, you still have to stand straight until the next opponent arrives on the mat.

    After a tap from me or them, I'll wanna reset and go again. The only time this doesn't happen is when they're going 200% because if im getting destroyed, having to use all my strength, I'll be tired.

    It’s like playing cards for money. When you win the pot you don’t just get up, take all the money and leave. You’re expected to give the others at the table a chance to win their money back. If you do get up and leave, the others will remember that and nothing else. If you’re good you’ll win that second, third and fourth hand (roll) and they’ll get the hint that they need to work harder at their game. And you need to challenge yourself more by walking over to that higher belt sitting there waiting for someone to ask them to roll.

    Wanting to finish after a submission is not just the right mentality. When training, one should focus in getting better, rather than feeling good about a win.

    I love getting exhausted in the gym it really help during my first competition it was 2 rolls back to back then 30 minutes later 2 more roles back to back the adrenaline dump was worse than I thought it would be 2 so in the gym when I feel like I can’t role again I intentionally pick the toughest guy to roll with😂😂😂

    As I'm new to doing BJJ I can see parallels to my powerlifting experience. When I look back at the number of times I tapped out with sets to do where would I be if I put on my adult pants and finished as strong as possible. Even if dropping weight on the bar was needed.

    when I did Judo whether it was randori(throwing) or newaza(groundfighting) I remember times when I would get the throw or get the submission and was spent after and you had to go again but it built endurance and stamina....gotta fight through it

    What about nerves and adrenaline? I have seen people that can roll for 20 mins in the gym and go to tournaments and gas in 3 to 5 mins. This is one reason why having extra gas in your tank can help you get through. I also feel like you learn the technique/muscle memory better when you are exhausted/in deep water. due to having the want or need to use the minimum amount of energy to execute the move. most of the time that is going to be the technically sound execution of the move. I also feel like it helps you to learn how to breathe and set up submissions or escapes. When you are fresh you can force a lot. so having the ability to do both, force and or execute with low energy cost is better all the way around. It helps increase your cardiovascular health. I don't think going and killing yourself in the gym every time yields a beneficial outcome.
    When you are new to the gym your fitness level may not be at the level you need. So it feels like you are killing yourself every time you go. If you have a good professor or trainer they will tell you went you are overdoing it. If you don't have a good prof. or trainer. Try to get a new one. I may be wrong, if I am tell me why, please.

    Agree, AND you shouldn't be "emptying your gas tank" to get a submission in day to day training.
    If you want it that bad and it's not competition training, chances are the guy's giving it to you anyway.

    Im about 6 months into jiu jitsu training and im starting to learn i have no heart. When im on the bottom and im tired I never try to explode out, cause scrambles and escape, i just accept the position, hope ill get submitted and we can reset. Its annoying me. i think its to do with fitness because I dont tap to just anything, its more about getting out of shitty positions

      Try to start your roll from the bottom might help with learning ways to get out without exploding. Protect your self and wait for a mistake most of the sweeps don't take a ton of energy.

    I want to know how to get rid of my "old man sounds". I try my best to not grunt or groan while rolling, but sometimes the pressures too much for me. Just yesterday we were practicing closed guard and the top guy put so much pressure on my sternum when I curled up to grab his head, that I let out such a groan he asked if I was alright. I was perfectly fine, no pain or discomfort, but I just couldn't help but groan.

    For those that have competed, how has competition helped your BJJ/fighting?

      It's another level. Even at the Executive old man level. It translates well to actual fighting in the adrenaline levels of you and the other guy. That's great because you don't want to space out on moves when being pressure tested. Honestly though- I carry OC spray and conceal carry a 9MM on the street and will use either before using BJJ. It's nice that I can use BJJ, but OC spray doesn't get me close enough for knife to come out. But maybe you were talking about MMA stuff.

    Hey chewy I met you at my first comp in Louisville(my home town) at a Fuji comp back on December 19th, I got 2 stripes on my white belt a month ago and Ik I have a ways to go before I get my blue belt but as a white belt what do I need to focus on to achieve or Atleast be on a progressing path towards my blue belt. I’ve lately be submitting a lot of the other white belts and even a few blue belts a couple times but I feel like subbing them doesn’t mean anything other than I got lucky. so any advice on how I can improve my game and work towards my blue belt?

    Im a 58 yo 3 stripe white belt whose only victories are tapping less than the day before. Everyone is faster and more flexible than me. strength wise I hold my own but even as my technique slightly improves every single athletic 20-30 yo improves way quicker than I do
    If you’re getting submissions and flaming out sounds like u need to grow some inner heart ❤️ muscle or mental strength

    I am sorry been watching this channel for while.. one of the dumbest questions i ever heard.. after technique you roll for last 30 min of class and u switch off partners every 3 min within that 3 min u just keep going tap no tap... imagine in them 3 min times first 30 sec u tap someone and just sit there till the switch lol umm ok
