Dude was holding back tears talking about meeting him in the hotel. You hear lots of celebrities paying condolences when another celebrity dies, but rarely do you hear the kind of emotion and sadness in those comments like you heard when people talked about Gord's death. I'm an American and I cried when I read about the diagnosis, and then again when I heard he was gone. Tragic.

I remember all the road side attractions outside, best memories, the pouring rain one concert, the mud on the infield of the race car track, the show he and hip put on, it was 25 years ago, but a great time

Oct 17 2017 I was flying to Japan to meet my then girlfriend's family and stay in the country for 3 weeks.. On that flight I listened to a lot of The Hip, to have a piece of Canada with me on that journey.. I landed to learn of Gord's passing. I go in, met her parents, and her brother.. who had just started learning guitar, and had a beautiful Gibson acoustic.. my GF, and her family were quite perplexed to the fact that I was an absolute wreck, and just spent the afternoon sitting with that guitar playing and singing Hip songs..

I kicked a French/Algerian out of a bar I was working at when the Hip did their last show.
He, the Frenchman, heard the Hip and Gord for the first time that night on a Canadian bar big screen. He was losing his mind about the power of that band. He was being loud. For the rest of us it was a requiem, a national funeral. All Canadians were silent.
He was a nice young French sailor in a port town. I brought him outside and explained the gravity of the concert he was seeing. He understood and went back to his ship
Canadians are polite people in general. I didn't want to see this otherwise decent man get ripped apart, bodily, by otherwise decent people. Such was our pain as a nation that day.

I read your story. You did the right thing, and in turn the sailor did as well.
I know Canada's heart was broken when the news came out, but know there are pockets here in the U.S. that absolutely LOVE the Hip. I was introduced to their talents in 1995, and have been a fan ever since, though their albums were a bit tougher to find here in Oklahoma.
When David Bowie died, I was so upset, as he was a huge influence on how I approached music. Then my friend said something so immediately profound. "If you ever feel saddened by the loss, just remember that you were alive at a time when David Bowie walked the earth." It cheered me up in such a way that cannot be described.
I offer you the same sentiment about Mr. Downie. If you ever feel upset or saddened by the loss of such a memorable human being, take heart and lift your spirits up, and take a toast to know you were alive when such an amazing man walked the earth, and filled your life with such wonderful music and poetry. Cheers, my friend.

He was one of Canada’s greats!...along with many of coarse!...I just feel bad that a wife of 20 years or more and four children and all that he stood by with her cancer....that he could not be in the same bed ...in the same house where he felt comfortable...and have his kids there each day taking care of him...having his brother take over his estate and affairs must of been so hard on him...she’s a selfish human being says his goods freinds and family!...she has what she wants now!...her dogs and money..money..money!...rest in peace Gord!...I hope you were at peace!...💔💔🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰🌈🌈🌈🌈🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🍁🍁🍁

The one last winter was a Leafs game. The one in the spring was in Boston. Bobby Orr was at both of them. The picture of Gord, Don Cherry and Bobby was from a Leafs game.
