  • In this video, Zoe and Trey invested in a Laguna Supermax 19-38 Drum Sander. They use it to finish making some Red Cedar Epoxy Bullet Casing Charcuterie Boards. We want to give a huge Thank You to CRAFTED ELEMENTS & ICE EPOXY. This video was made possible by these two incredible companies partnering with us! Also, shout out to Rockler Woodworking in Orlando, FL for having the best options for drum sanders near us.

    People have commented about safety, and picking a dust collector, so a few other things to maybe think about. To make sure your boards have parallel faces, measure the boards with calipers. The bed can be calibrated pretty close using them. With the open ended sanders, it is possible to flex the head off of level by taking too much of a cut at a time. This will show up with wider boards. Taking too much off at a time may cause a dust build up, and stall the drum, even with a good dust collector. Lighten your depth of cut. Some woods are more prone to burning, and creating a burned deposit on the belt. A lighter cut, and sometimes speeding up the feed rate can help. Clean the belt frequently, Rockler carries an abrasive cleaning stick, a wire brush, and a pick can help clear out any hard to remove burn build up. Some belts will continue to create build up at the same locations after cleaning, and may need to be used for other things, or disposed of. To save money on belts, you can cut your own belts from long rolls. Klingspor is one brand. I wore out a Performax sander, and now have a Powermatic sander. I only bought a planer two years ago, so it is possible to surface boards using only a drum sander, but slower. To flatten and straighten a warped slab, build a sled with a stop at the end, and the board will push against the stop. Put your slab on the sled, and shim the board so it doesn't rock. Run the sled and slab through until you have one flat surface. Roll the slab over and run it through directly on the carriage. Have fun.

    Here is a tip for you regarding the plastic wraps that go around boxes or bundles of paper. If you go to the point where the two ends are "pressed together", turn the pressure point over, grab the end piece of the wrap on the bottom and give it a pull. The straps will come apart real easy!

They would make really neat plaques or shields for mounting a hunters shoulder mounts of deer, elk, antelope etc etc. They would be so much nicer than just sticking them on a blank wall like most people do. They would be super simple to make once you made the mold. Anyway, just an idea for the smaller wood scraps etc. Have a blessed day everyone.👍✌🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

    Having done woodworking all my life with all the tools (hand and power) available, I found the drum sanders a bit of a luxury that was seldom used. It came in very hand when I made flag cases (free to veterans and law officers) where I would make a couple dozen at a time. It made quick work of the sanding for individual pieces. But for everything else it was too much trouble having to change the grits for only a few pieces. Also, people need to realize that this is not a planer. You can't take of too much or you will burn the paper or wood. I found hand sanding was usually quicker with less damage. Just my opinion. Now, back to some tunes and more sanding...
    P.S. Get some dust collection! You lungs will thank you! None of the wood or resin dust is good for you!

    One suggestion. Have someone that reloads ammo to add the bullet to the cartridge (brass) (no powder and no new primer) so that it looks like live ammo. Use different calibers. Maybe even specialty (large) calibers. Among men this would make a fun caliber guessing game.

    If I may tell you -- WEAR HEARING PROTECTION!!!! Yes, you are young. Yes you are pretty and don't want to wear hearing protection because the mouse ears mass up your hair. But after a half a century of working around woodworking machinery without hearing protection, I now have a 70% hearing loss. I also have emphysema from inhaling so much fine wood dust. Please -- anyone that reads this, protect yourself, your hearing and your lungs!

    • @bruceinoz8002
      @bruceinoz8002 2 года назад +1

      Ditto on the protective gear.
      Also be aware that the dust from some hardwood species is TOXIC; a LOT toxic.
      ALL wood contains some natural chemicals to deter pests, but species like "Black Bean" take it to extremes.

    • @bruceinoz8002
      @bruceinoz8002 2 года назад +2

      Forgot to mention:
      Natural timber makes the best cutting boards BECAUSE of those natural toxins.
      The "new-fangled" government-approved Nylon ones are STERILE, until you start using them. Each nick with a knife leaves a nice, blood-soaked place for bacteria to party. Soaking in serious bleach fixes that, but it must be done regularly, especially in a commercial situation.
      If your timber block or board gets a little scruffy, sand it back to expose some new anti-bacterial wood and carry on cooking. Timber boards also have more "character".

      I like how she uses the fan to keep dust going away from her obviating the need for a mask also the workshop is open to outside so doesn’t get as noisy as a walled workshop … squishy ear plugs are just as effective as ear cup ear muffs at protecting the ears from bad noise …

    • @robertm348
      @robertm348 2 года назад

      @@chrisbraid2907 1. The fan helps, but does not remove the ultra-fine particles that do so much damage.
      2. Being outside with squishy ear plugs has no great effect on reducing hearing damage, I flew on military C-130 aircraft for twenty-six years in addition to woodworking. Trust me when I tell you hearing damage is cumulative and you have to take every precaution! Youth has no bearing on prevention.

Please use some hearing protection and thank me in a few years. : ) Also, you seem to be jumping a lot of steps in the sand paper grit world.
