My uncle felled a Cedar Tree on his property in the early 1940's and made nearly ALL the furniture for his 3 bedroom house out of it, including a Dining Room table with dimensions 12 feet long and 4 feet 6 inches wide in a SINGLE SLAB. No saw mills or modern machinery used!!

Cool story
I woked on a oilfield construction job in New Guinea in 1974. We had a small sawmill that was powered by a Volkswagen motor. Being surrounded by virgin jungle there were many excotic trees there , it was also the area of battles from WW2. Often when cutting a tree for lumber the saw blade would make a loud nosie and wable a little as the slab of lumber fell away deep in the tree woulb be a 20mm bullet that had been fired by an aircraft from the war.
As the trees were cut close to our camp it was decieded to cut more trees next to a river furter away from our camp with the idea to float the logs down to the camp. Trees were cut and stacked on the bank of the river waiting for a good rain storm that finally came using a bulldozer the logs where pushed into the river were they sank to the buttom of the river and lost. Seems the trees were a species of iron wood that is so dense the wood will not foat.
When you are cutting cedar dont even waste the sawdust!!!! You can package that and sell to people to put in closets and cedar chests! I love the smell of cedar! And it looks great on flower beds and even flower pots!😍😍😍😍😍
I am a month shy of reaching my 94th birthday and referred to as a ' little old lady '. However, I am still handy with a rake, live alone, feed myself, take care of my water garden and enjoy [ with interest ] the video I just watched. I can well imagine the beautiful things that can and will be made out of this red wood that was saved from certain loss to Mother Nature. Good work.

One of the best jobs I ever had was pulling green chain at a lumber mill, the smell of the fresh cut wood, the clean Air and the pine trees everywhere, it was amazing, nothing boring about it

When I lived on the western slopes years past we cut cedar and I will remember that clean smell the rest of my life. Your cedar is magnficent, and I am happy you were able to cut those beautiful slabs. I had visions of so many beautiful things they'd become.
You guys are living a dream. A place out in the country with a shop and equipment to do stuff like this for a living. Must feel very rewarding.

I dunno I saw a couple of nice fireplace mantels. I had a big slab of black walnut left that the metal detector hit on. 5” thick 10” wide and 8’ long. I gave it to my sister and it topped off her stone fireplace in the addition to their 200 year old farmhouse

Cedar chips and etc in bags and put them in pet areas or kennels or dog houses to keep the ticks and fleas away. We have a huge cedar that takes four adults or more to go around the girth. I can only imagine the wood I could get out of it but its hundreds of years old so that won't happen. LOL Love this stuff and the smell of the cedar is amazing. I was thinking on small pieces even book ends would be pretty and a conversation piece.........love wood!

I have a small 30 g air compressor beside my saw mill to clean the dust off of the cuts and it also helps to clean the saw after use. Found the compressor on craigslist for 20 bucks and guy didnt even know that it still ran, nice vintage compressor. Thought i would mention it, you guys do great work, keepem coming!!

Hi, I live in southern Spain (olive country|). Super hard wood and very intricate shapes when sliced through. Some trees could be 1000 years old and more. One would need a huge saw mill to do the slicing! The sad thing is that most of the wood is cut for fire wood. also available are cork, almond, chessnut trees in certain areas. I'm sure there is money to be made especially with old olive trees. Hasta luego amigos! Blessings. No rain over here for the last 6 months...Yours George

I love the smell of eastern red cedar! One of my favorite soft woods.
I had a fallen dead cedar in my backyard for 20 years. When we started to remove it, we cut it and the wood was gorgeous. It was well used on many projects.
We have pine tongue and groove on the walls in our home, but we have cedar on all the door and window frames. Offsets pine beautifully

You guys are remarkable. I love watching the progress some those logs are just beautiful pieces. Making beautiful tables. Years age when I was first married we had a beautiful table for the dining room that I service 15 people.

I watched your video on that beautiful cedar tree...... here's a suggestion you might want to consider saving the shavings .They would be great because you can put them in satchels. people would love to have them hanging in their closet for the smell ..that's would be an extra profit for you .. might want to think about that so none of the tree is wasted it's an idea I would definitely buy a couple for my closet

A few years ago. My wife and I went to an old county fair in Barbarville Florida. I portable saw mill was set up and the operator happened to be sawing up red cedar logs. I purchased a whole log. It was 40 inches in diameter and about 9 ft long. First had him saw it in half leaving the bark on. Then had him cut it down to 6 ft length. Then I had him cut one of the two ft butt pieces into 8 equal pieces for legs. I sold what was left over to someone standing there watching for more than my initial payment to the logger. I had him load my wood into the back of my Bronco . At home I carefully stripped the bark off all the pieces. Gr Cedar wood underneath had some beautuful worm tunnels and holes. I sanded all pieces down to fine grit level. I used a draw knife to shape all eight pieces into legs. 4 were used as legs for a 6 ft. Bench and the other 4 for a 2 ft stool. Then I carved a primitive style checker board 24 x 24 ". Then some other primative
Artwork on the rest of the bench. I tell painted the art work and painted the checkerboard barn red and powder blue. I made Red and Blue checkers for the checker board. It became a popular coffee table and game table. And the Cedar provided a warm and cozy scent for the family room. The small stool was used for one player and the couch served to seat the other. When not using them for games. They made a perfect place for magazines and my antique chess board. Everyone loved it. Thanks for the reminder thanks to your video.
After 83 years of life it was Joy watching this video. I became a Shop Teacher in 1961. I taught 16 yrs and gave it Up. 4yrs of the teaching I was a pre-PEACE CORP Volunteer with INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER SERVICES in South East Asia. I am the only American to ever set up a WOODSHOP and Teacher Woodwooeld working with a Lao Carpenter as my Partner. It can my life Drastically. It's what made the VIDEO SO ENJOYABLE. I was able to go to a Local LAO SAW MILL to by my lumber for the shop. The lumber was all Luan cut meters and centimeters.
The largest slab I ever delt with was of Paduk. It was 5meters x 28inches wide x 2inches thick. It took 4 men to bring it in my Wood Shop. I was given 78 inches of it. I turned that into Japanese Dinning Table 78 x 25 by 2. I made the legs from 4x4 Luan that I stained to match the Redness of the Paduk. The table now sit in front of me in my living email here in Jacksonville, FL 32246. IT WEIGHS: 125 LBS.

I’m from Australia and we were using band saws to cut a “cypress pine” logs which is actually a hardwood not a pine (a long story) we had to go back to disc saws because the band saws kept on moving around

I think I heard them say "I can't believe there's not something." And "Yeah like scorpions.". If that's what I heard then there's a wonderful explanation for the lack of insect activity that you'd normally expect to see in a half rotten log. Aromatic cedar is like nature's insect repellent. That's why hope chests, wardrobes, etc etc are most often made with it.... super easy yet incredibly beautiful way to keep the buggies out. Not to mention the smell is fantastic, to me. Crawly critters, not so much. This is an amazing piece you've gotten & seems well worth the all the effort. Also, you can make your own wood filler from the sawdust & some Elmer's glue (I think just the regular ol' white school glue, if I remember correctly).

That is some beautiful Cedar‼️ It’s my favorite type of wood. I love the smell of it 👩🏻🏫🥰‼️ Wish I could afford a dining-room table made of that wood. But it’s probably quite expensive, isn’t it? You could probably make all kinds of things out of that wood, even with the small pieces, with the use of Epoxy. I think things are really cool made with Epoxy.

Ok pAuse.... Love the video.... One thing... On special cuts or knowing the use of epoxy for any use of it.... I'm going to advise you this one thing.... For your hardeners , I see. You throw all your dust on the ground with the pan trial.... Save your dust for mixing in and filling in spots.... A gallon bag or 2 make a world of difference friends.....

Can you explain what you are talking about with the dust being beneficial. I get a lot of Cedar Dust from the ones I use as firewood.
@@kelseyjames618 sure. I know a few wood turners and wood carvers. Knots are common and the use of the actual thing is best. So for a person that uses epoxies or herding compounds , mix in the saw dust and chunks of the material so it stays the natural color, when using glue also. Glue changes the color of anything it touches. So.. table slabs normally have a knot, can be used as filler...

About 40 years ago we cut one down that was very similar--HUGE! When I dig in the area today I still find its roots. Little or no rot!

That red dust is not called Shake it's called sawdust the dust that comes off when it's being cut by the saw so therefore it's called sawdust

A lot of woodworkers like the nooks and crannies in the wood. They make for interesting projects. Those smaller pieces are good for making segmented rings.

I caught a slab years ago. At a cedar mill I worked at. It has a walnut inside of it. We cut right through the the middle of the walnut. That had been inside that tree for no telling how long. I still have the slab. And the half walnut in it.
That must have smelt heavenly!
I have a few comments. The 1st is financial. The aromatic aspects of Cedar are legendary. As such, there are 2 things that you can do. 1st is to put a bucket at the end of your exhaust port and save the Cedar shavings because they are very valuable as an aromatic. The 2nd is to save the small trimmings as you can cut them into small strips and hang them in a closet for aromatic and moth purposes.
beautiful..when i was living in Kingsville Texas i was carrying some fire wood.. mesquite.. there was a bark scorpion in the bark of one of the sticks.. the guy i was working with jumped away in a big hurry.. and sure enough out came a bark scorpion...i had never seen one being from the state of Maine...
They don't hurt too bad. I had one crawl in a sleeping bag with me once so I was awakened with a little sting surprise. Honestly, it wasn't even as bad as a honey bee. Just startled me a little.

Oh My God!!! At 29:32 at the top of this piece I see a city scape on the left, a valley in the middle and an ocean view, on the right I see a large villa with trees. Like a rough sketch drawn by an artist. If I could afford it I would buy it and bring out what nature painted/created in this piece. The foreground moving towards the bottom is like cliffs with a lake at the bottom. The most valuable piece in the lot so far.
That last big slab of cedar was a dream for an EPOXY workers project - could be worth a lot of money to the right woodworker.

Did you check the it with a metal detector before you started ? There could have been bullets, wire or other metals that the tree grew around. It could save a blade.

Some people might look at that log that has rot throughout it, but a creative woodworker (like me) sees past that and can make some beautiful woodcrafts out of those pieces ...Including the fluorescent color of some epoxys will not only hold it together as a slab for a table top, wall art etc...

Watching this brought some painful memories back from my days working in a furniture factory. I guess you're trying to figure out how this can remind me of the early 1980s in a furniture factory and it's not the material it's the saw that reminded me because I worked with a band knife that was so sharp it cut through very large blocks of foam that were cut into different sizes/shapes for the chairs/sofas that were the inner part of the furniture before being covered in material. The blocks started off at different sizes, imagine a block of foam stood on one end that was 10' high and over 6' wide and around 4' depth and all these are just guides because some could be larger but keep in mind that this is laid on a steel bed that moved forwards and backwards and if kept to a perfect edge the blade never snagged the foam it was always smooth unless in some blocks the foam wasn't always perfect and these went back to the manufacturers of the foam and thankfully that wasn't very often but not being our fault the manufacturers of the foam credited us back our money just as it should be with any company that's at fault.
You have the gist of it, but my memory is of one of the cuts that then was shaped for the different parts of the furniture and most of the time all was well unless you were making a new model then you didn't have the different safety guards that were needed to protect you from the blade, the blade went around the four rollers at each corner and the band saw was obviously bigger than the original block of foam before the first pieces were cut to make the different size pieces of foam which the various cuts were taken from and when deciding to go ahead with the new furniture then the different safety measures could be made to protect me from the blade but at the beginning, I had to use bits of this and that to hold the cuts of foam against the back wall of the bed to make the different cuts but on one occasion what I used wasn't thick enough to protect my arm but until the foam started changing to red, I and the management who watched to see how the cuts would look and come out for the new styles of furniture then realized the blade had cut into the lower part of my arm on the top because I had to use it to hold what should have protected my arm from the circling blade but on this occasion the blade cut through to my arm and into it without it snagging to let me know that was how sharp the blade had to be for this type of work, that cut led to me being taken to the hospital by which time a pile of material to cover the arm was soaked but with some stitches at the hospital the bleeding gradually stopped but ever since that day I've lived with the scar, but video brought back the pain and the fact I couldn't face using the band saw ever again, three times I tried but I couldn't because I literally went to pieces when I was by the saw. The difference between the saw in this video and the one I used at the furniture factory was the one I used was a flat edge like most kitchen knives are a lot finer, so fine that if you pushed or pulled the bed, which the foam lay on, too far the blade slipped aside and before you knew it the blade started cutting into the end of the bed without any problem, that should give you some idea of what the blade could do and so much more than the one used for cutting the wood in this video. I hope no one ever has to face what I did while in that job, or at least not in the same situation as I was that day all those years ago. Because of not coping with that job, it did lead to me not having a job for the first time in 30yrs, but that was then and as the saying goes 'now is now and then was then' except now I'm medically retired. Sorry to bore you with this bit of my life, but it was seeing the blade circle around that brought up what I thought was gone from my memories. I have to say that seeing this cedar cut brought back memories of my days of cutting up dead trees for use in place of coal fires at home and like for those in this video it was satisfying to see the end product ready for its use.
