    This is so true, ever since I changed my attitude in 2nd year of college, my grades have been way better. I've started doing community service every weekend by helping the kids in my neighbourhood with math hw. Being positive and spreading it really helps from within, idk if it helps improving your health but I definitely feel better. ( I'm a Business Economics student btw, I just love mathematics a lot haha )

    This is beautiful. I have practiced it on wanting nothing and doing anything. The result, I am happier than ever before. I hope that many people would realised that people are unhappy because of their 'wanting' and if we keep on doing this, human all over the world will surely unite in one entity.

    Thanks Thomas, this is a great teaching!
    "When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself:
    The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, jealous, and surly.
    They are like this because they can't tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own - not of the same blood or birth, but of the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine.
    And none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him.
    We were born to work together like feet, hands, and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower.
    To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are obstructions." ~ Marcus Aurelius

    There is some great science behind the power of positive thinking. Although it doesn't necessarily relate to this topic, you should check out the social construct that is dendividuation and talk about it. I think so many people would have a better awareness to their negativity when they are in negative groups.

    You're so insightful! Currently struggling with this. I'm a junior in college and live with 3 other girls in an apartment. One of them is so negative and upset all the time. I try and be positive around her and most of the time I end up going to my room because she complains all the time.

    • @Thomasfrank

      I feel you - I've had to deal with the same kind of stuff. Honestly, while I tried to stay positive as much as I could, I also took steps to move sooner than I had originally planned as well. I want to be positive in all my interactions, but I also don't want my home base to be a place of negativity.

  • @RiseandTell

    This reminds me of Brene Brown's Rising Strong. She has the epiphany that people are doing 'the best they can' at any given moment. Like when a dude loses it at a McDonalds for leaving the pickles on his McDouble- Maybe his girlfriend broke up with him or he found out he failed a test that day. Operating on the assumption that people aren't just shitty- they do shitty things because of life- I find it helps me think 'oh he's having a bad day' and not 'what a fucking scum bag! the world is full of them'.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 лет назад

      That's a great insight, and I truly believe that for the majority of people. Controlling your emotions and acting positively is a skill that requires practice, and some circumstances push people beyond their current ability.
      It's not to say that there aren't people out there who truly are just jerks, but I think they form a very small minority.

  • @joelhc9703
    @joelhc9703 8 лет назад +1

    My #1 tip in this situation is to ask "What do you want?". Most of these miserable people lack goals and probably would tell you something like "I don't know...nothing...what?". Right there you can end the conversation/interaction in many different ways: "Leave me alone", "Mind your own business", "I'm not interested", "I'm bussy", "Get out of my way", "No, thanks", "I do not like you", "Bye" or you just leave, giving them the nothingness that they want.
    I mean, understanding, empathy and temprance are nice but sometimes they take a time and effort that you are not willing to invest.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 лет назад +10

      Eh, I don't think those responses are really in the spirit of what Aurelius was saying. He mentioned that our nature is cooperation, and ending a conversation rudely isn't the way to cooperate. It's harder, but I find it's worth it to end conversations more tactfully.

    The message I get out of this quote basically is to reflect on people's flaws, be on the good side of people and have empathy for the sake of your own sanity, which is absolutely necessary when all us humans are crazy. But in the long run a person may easily collapse keeping their true thoughts/reactions on people's negative words/attitudes locked up. I think it's really important to find a way to relief that stress that comes with living this lifestyle.(If you're planning to follow this for a long time) Trust me, been there done that. Keeping away for certain periods of time and meditation for the soul is the key.

    • @Soma2501
      @Soma2501 8 лет назад +1

      Exercise or any physical activity is a natural stress reducer. We were made to be stressed when in danger increasing memory and strength shortly and a lot of other stuff that would be used physically which would reduce our stress. The way society is shaped now, we are mostly stressed from things like taxes, projects, etc. (Mental things) and so we don't have that release. This can cause things like chronic stress which is very bad for you. I could go on forever, just do some kind of physical activity once in a while.

    Hey Thomas, Sorry for the wall of text by it might give you an idea for a video or just general food for thought:
    I've notaiced that ever since S6 (the last year of school in the UK) after a holiday (or a general break form shool) I get a period of time when Im like "I can't do this education stuff anymore".
    I used to get through it in a day, but now just staring 3rd year of uni this feeling isnt going away ... Its getting worse ...
    I feel like Im wasting the best years of my life (im 20 btw) studding when I just want to travel and "be one with nature" (sound hippy but I grew up on a farm so hey ...). I love the course I'm doing, engineering, Ive been interested in it for as long as i remember and I also like the sort of jobs I can get form it ... yet I still feel that its all for nothing ... (btw im not depressed or anything like that)

      my advice is to finish what you started, so that you have a backup in case your travelling dream doesnt meet your needs..

      Just keep at it man, you're doing great! You've still got you're whole life ahead of you, putting in the hard work now will be so worth it once you're finished and then you can travel the world with the assurance of a solid job to fall back on. The best is yet to come!

      Can you get a bit of time to take a break and get out into nature? How much time do you spend on the internet - could you go on a 3-hour hike each week instead of staying inside?
      Honestly, there are days when I really just want to work with my hands. I've entertained fantasies of becoming a carpenter or an electrician at times when doing computer work gets really frustrating. But I've learned that the key is just to get an adequate amount of time away from screens, so now I just make sure to go hiking or do more hands-on activities instead of using my free time on video games and such.

      Thomas Frank I've been catching all the sun I can befor the long dark winter, and I just booked a weekend long hiking trip out of town :)

      Thanks for the replay tho! You quite possibly are the person that keeps the most motivaded to study so keep it up man.

      Thank you! I used three songs in this video. During the Aurelius quote I used "Soaring" by Kevin MacLeod. The main background track is "Black Lung" by Broke for Free, and the ending track is "Nola", also by Broke for Free.
