    This is an absolute *Masterclass* in Vocal Phrasing.
    His sense of timing and rhythm, his ability to go from dragging-to rushing, all while being so smooth-that you don’t even notice it…

    As I understand, the recording of A Change Gonna Come does exist, but is tied up in legal mess, but was not lost or destroyed. Basin Street Blues was a cover tune, while Change was one of Sam's original compositions, thus the legal mess. As a long-time Sam Cooke fan, I pray that the tape is released one day soon..

      Don't believe it it's not true. There's two legal tangle other than the fact that Sam's wife is trying to keep his children from getting any proceeds. Sam never sang A change is going to come on The Tonight Show. He did not intend for it to be commercialized. He wrote the song for dr. Martin Luther King with the proceeds to go to the SCLC. When he died Alan Klein stuck it on the flip side of shake. Tells you who wanted to see Sam Cooke dead. Sam was promoting ain't that good news his hit single that the time at the Basin Street Blues when she was singing at the Copacabana. Renee Hall do the arrangements with Johnny Carson references.

      Exactly what I was thinking!
      I'd love to hear an explanation of how that happened - that one part of the Feb 7th show survived and the other one didn't.
      My more skeptical side wonders if, given the volatile racial climate of the time, archivists weren't exactly eager to save the performance. Think of it: during a period that just had the March on Washington and Kennedy's assassination months earlier, "Change" would have been a very jolting, urgent and provocative comment on current events. Its dark, haunting tone would have stood in deep contrast to this cheery performance, and might have been interpreted as the singer's direct message to the nation. As if with doing both performances side by side, he's trying to say, "As happy as I usually am, I'm not going to pretend like something isn't deeply wrong with our country."
      Remember also that "Change" was the first and only serious song Cooke ever did, so such a shift in performance style surely shook his audience, who was used to seeing a happy-go-lucky Cooke. It would have stood far apart from all his previous performances, and on such a "third rail" topic.
      Maybe all of that made the performance "too hot to handle"?
      In any case, we might be pleasantly surprised in the future. After all, we certainly didn't think we'd see "Metropolis" (the 1927 film by Fritz Lang) in full ever again.

      I have written this so many times. There is no tape of A Change is Gonna Come because Sam never sang the song commercially. He wrote it for Dr. Martin Luther King's SCLC never seeking to profit from it. The two songs he sang on The Tonight Show were Ain't that Good News and Basin Street Blues. Nobody sang three songs on The Tonight Show; there wasn't enough time.
      Also something to consider: If you think RCA would let Sam sing a song like that on National Television think again about the mid-60s. Didn't happen

      The movie is fictional none of that happened. The playwright admitted it when it was a play in Miami. In fact the conversations that were had between Malcolm Sam Muhammad Ali and only occasionally Jim Brown happened at Dolphins of Hollywood in SLA, which the LAPD had tried to shut down for breaking segregation laws of the time. Amazing that LA had such a thing but it did. The Tonight Show seldom featured someone singing three songs. Two was generally the limit. The only exception might be someone like Tony Bennett but for the most part an artist sang one, maybe two songs. Sam never sang that song for money. I'm telling you his nephew, his sister's son, told me this family truth about the song. In fact when Sam first did the tape of the recording he brought it over to his parents house in Chicago and they listened in stunned silence. Goosebumps. His brother David relay this to me. You can read about it in One More River to Cross: the Redemption of Sam Cooke of which a new edition is coming out very shortly but the Kindle version is still available. There never was a tape of A Change is Gonna Come because he never sang it there.

    • @SamCookeFan11
      @SamCookeFan11 3 года назад +3

      If people are claiming there is a tape they are misinformed. There is no tape. The tape of Sam on that show has him singing Ain't That Good News and Basin Street Blues. That was plenty for a singer of his stature at that time. This was the first time he was ever on The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson was a comedian and the bulk of the show was comedy. Music provided variety and a break, that was it. Sam had felt badly that he had not done enough to contribute to the movement and when he met Dr. King at the Atlanta airport shortly after the March on Washington which he could not attend due to a touring commitment, he promised him a song and thought perhaps he could even get other artists to contribute music to an album. You have to remember things like this were not done in the music business. They felt they owned these artists. If you know how the movie Studios owned actors it was even rougher for artist in music. They did not like somebody like Sam Cooke producing other young singers. The mob ran the music business and RCA was just as mobbed-up as the rest of them. That's why they took Sam out. That and the fact that he discovered they had stolen his titles of operation and fraudulently registered a new one under Allen Klein's name in the Reno, NV courthouse.
