I loved the gameplay but was unfortunately was very disappointed by the plot and the characters. It's an amazing product and I definitely feel like I got my money's worth but idk. Maybe the problem were my expectations. Given the obvious and explicit inspirations I'm just sad it felt short in the specific aspects I was the most excited about. Even the music, which is basically a downright requirement to nail on JRPGs is somewhat over the place. Every combat/boss song was impeccable but basically every field/town/dungeon track that wasn't done by Mitsuda left a lot to desire. The lore was pretty dope though, I am very excited to see what the team is cooking for their next project. I just hope they tighten their writing process if they're going to go with a narrative-driven genre for it.

This was easily the most disappointing game of 2023 for me. Terrible writing and awful characters ruined what is aesthetically, a beautiful game. The battles were just boring after a while. You just use the basic attack over and over just to use one of the few special attacks that you learn.
